3 nights of luxury after the TMB

    rating13 Sept 2015

This is a well run hotel deserving of more stars with excellent views of the snow covered alps around Mont Blanc. My room (504) was excellent and well appointed with good toiletries and plenty of towels in the bathroom. Dinner on our first night was excellent so I'm looking forward to the next two dinners! Breakfast was sensational and the best I'd had in the last ten days on the TMB.The WiFi was very good and allowed video Facetime connections which was handy for my other business interests and speaking to my family in the UK.I can strongly recommend this venue - thanks for looking after me!Alan Ward - International Mountain Leader

Great chalet, great hosts &great food! Phew!

    rating11 Jan 2014

We've just got back from a week at this lovely chalet and we were really impressed with the chalet itself, the hosts and the food. I was a little apprehensive after reading a previous review on here about the food/wine but I think they must have upped the budget this season or maybe our hosts are just better cooks! All of the food was delicious - we actually asked for a few of the recipes for the puddings/afternoon cakes. And there was no problem with portions; we struggled to finish our meals most nights and there were always some seconds on offer. We got two glasses of wine a night which was pleasant if not the fanciest wine.As well as being good cooks, our hosts were really bubbly, friendly and always keen to help/chat about the area. Another great plus point was that on the first night we had the hire skis fitted at the chalet opposite, which meant we could ski straight out in the morning with no faffing at a ski shop. It's a very short walk (2 minutes?) from the chalet to a green run down to the main Bergers ski lift area. You can ski back to the chalet down a green or get back by bus from near Bergers lift/the kids ski school/DMC Gondolas. Though the bus stops at 5.30ish so it's quite a long walk to/from town for a night out.The hot tub and sauna were great and the chalet itself was really hot. Sometimes a little too hot but an open window soon got it to a comfortable temperature. All rooms had ensuite sink, bath&shower but not all had a toilet? There's a TV, DVD player (though no great DVDs so bring your own) and a whole bunch of board games plus a couple of packs of cards for lazy evenings in. I loved this resort as it had loads of fun, easy green/blue runs for learners then more challenging reds/blacks further up. At the top of the DMC gondolas I can recommend the snow cave with snow sculptures for a 15 minute break from skiing (5 euro entry) and the Folie Deuce at the top of the Marmottes lift is a must, especially if dancing on tables is your thing. If you don't feel comfortable skiing down you can get the chairlift back down. Officially the last one is 4.30pm and the Folie stops serving about then. We went on Friday afternoon and about half the people were in normal boots/trainers so its great if you're having an afternoon off/you suck at skiing drunk.Think that's covered it...

Clean chalet....with the worlds worst food.

    rating13 May 2013

Booking the holiday - Good service from `Bookable holidays` and `Rocket ski` , all required information was supplied. Ski package put together well by the company. My package price alone came to £ 1020 . A Totally unrealistic "single room" supplement was added to the bill as i required the privacy of my own room. Everything was confirmed as booked and flight details from Manchester to Grenoble and return to Manchester again were correct as stated in the confirmation details. Transfers from Airport to resort - This was informative and well carried out. Coach to the Chalet door and greeted by the friendly Chalet reps. After travelling from Cumbria to France for almost 9 hours , no welcome drink ( Coffee or Tea ) was provided to us. No cakes , biscuit or any form of snack was offered upon our arrival at the chalet. Our ski package was delivered next morning by the Rocket ski representative. Skis were brought to the Chalet directly and equipment fitted and adjusted by the rep. Skis were good quality but boots were old , worn and very tatty. They actually fitted well and were very comfortable. I'm sure that our rep would have changed them without a problem if required. The ski passes were delivered on time and direct to the chalet. The Chalet -- Very clean and a very beautiful Chalet indeed. The rooms were all clean and tidy and served their purpose well. The towels were changed only "once" during our whole holiday. This applied to all of the chalet guests. We had to use the same bath sized towel for 5 days without change , for showering , sauna and jacuzzi. There was only "one" radiator in the bathroom and this was totally used up drying ski clothing. There was no heating at all in the chalet bedroom so i had to keep the bathroom door open all night to keep warm in bed. There was no wifi provided in the hotel which in this day and age is totally unacceptable. The only way for me to retrieve emails and messages was to walk the `20 minutes` into resort to the nearest bar. People need to communicate and this was a big let down at chalet Campanules. Our chalet hosts also stated that they had to go into resort to communicate with the outside world. No televisions in any of the chalet bedrooms....Beggars belief. There were 18 guests staying at the hotel. Some wanted to watch Football , others wanted to watch the News , and the children wanted to watch cartoons. How can 18 people possibly share one solitary TV. ? Other guests stated their disbelief and questioned the fact " what are we meant to do at night" ? It was 20 minutes walk to the bars in minus 10 degree temperatures " up a steep hill" and with no shuttle transport available. A taxi into town was 12 Euros "each way " which was totally unacceptable....There was simply nothing to do in the chalet during the evening and so guests ended up going to bed between 9 and 10 pm totally bored. FOOD - The biggest let down of the whole holiday. I was as excited about the French chalet food as much as the skiing. The food in France is world class and the regional food of the area is the food of legend, Tartiflette , Fondue, Raclette , Hot Stone grilling.... i was looking forward to this like a child on Xmas eve. To sum the weeks cuisine at Chalet Campanule up can be done rather easily with a few simple words...." The worst food I've eaten in my life " ..... and I've eaten some bad food during my World travels. Two chalet hosts , young adults 18 and 25 years old barely knowing how to boil an egg is totally alien in a chalet of such quality. The hosts didn`t even know how to make a "gravy" for a roasted ( cremated ) Lamb dish.....coloured water with a 10mm layer of unskimmed Lamb fat floating on the surface. Guests around the table were silenced into disbelief and asked " What are we meant to do with this " ? Breakfast - A poor selection of "rubberised" cheese and "wet" ham out of a packet were our only main options. Our daily "hot option" was a solitary "Boiled Egg".....Every day. 18 guests.....18 eggs. One morning i was particularly hungry so i helped myself to "2" eggs and as a result one of the Chalet guests went without. Cheap and nasty " bulk buy" value cornflakes and Muesli were provided with Long life milk as an alternative option along with freshly baked French Baguettes. Pain au Chocolat and croissants were taken out of the "freezer" and left out in the open on trays for 12 hours to defrost overnight,..... Hygiene training comes into question here. The food we ate during dinner - Proof of the pudding as you will no doubt see from my accompanying photographs. If i had simply described the food in writing then it wouldn`t have been believed. Fortunately i took photographs of every single course so i now have the visual evidence of what is being served to guests in Rocket ski facilities. Other guests complained about portion sizes and the fact that they were being served "childrens meals". French Baguettes it seems were the best part of the evening meal and every piece was eaten as this it seems was the only way to fill up after a days skiing. Afternoon tea - One plate was left each day and more often than not only managed to feed half of the chalet occupants before being used up. " Gingerbread men" and "cookies" were made on 2 of the days and "flapjack" on the other. Nothing was made and left on the Chalet hosts day off. No attempts were made to bake a cake or anything else that i would have expected to see in a chalet of this quality....very poor. Desserts - Poor quality Lemon tart ( bought in and not home made ) garnished with 2 defrosted Raspberries. Profiteroles - Dried out and brittle , one had a little cream inside and the other had none. Apple tarte tatin - Bought in from external supplier. This tart is meant to be cooked fresh on a stove and then inverted on to a plate. "Upside down" Apple tart is actually cooked "upside down" . Perhaps it would be a good idea to educate the chalet `chefs` not to serve it pastry side up on the plate......but there again , surely a chef would know this ? Chalet guests provided their own salamis and various cheeses to eat before and after dinner every night. This was done simply because we all knew we would go hungry otherwise. Wine during dinner - I can only describe this as "Cheap and undrinkable Red wine not fit to put on to Chips". I would guess that the company is buying this "table" wine in at less than 2 Euros a bottle and all dinner guests are allocated " ONE" glass during dinner. Most guests done a double take when they were told this and it seems like this is totally unheard of in the Chalet world. This also resulted in every guest having to go to the supermarket to buy half decent bottles of wine to accompany their evening dinner. It was totally laughable around the dinner table each evening. The flight - Not good at all and this totally unacceptable practise needs seriously addressed if they are to continue trading as a "reputable" and professional company. Our party of three along with another 26 travellers were informed only hours before resort departure that our flight from Grenoble to Manchester had been cancelled. We were all informed that we would be flying to Gatwick and then transferred "by air" onwards to Manchester. The first reason for this was that the "plane was broken". The second reason was that "The plane is only half full" . We were informed about this by our Rocketski representative. Upon further questioning it was established that this flight cancellation had been known about at the time of booking. If we had known about this then we would have simply cancelled the holiday and gone with another company. Once we were aboard the flight it was announced by the flight attendant that the connecting journey from Gatwick to Manchester wouldn't be by air.....but by bus. To cut a long story short , 29 Rocketski travellers were then kept waiting in Gatwick airport by a totally confused airport staff , ushered on to a tatty coach and transferred by road to Manchester airport. Our driver from Manchester airport to Cumbria was kept waiting in his vehicle for 5 hours......... Totally unacceptable.....and the recompense..... A £5 Marks and Spencer voucher , absolutely disgraceful and all along , not one word of apology or an explanation about the situation. It was a case of " Thanks for your money and goodbye". I sent a detailed letter of complaint to Rocketski and what did I get....a 10% off voucher for future holidays...." if " they`re still trading.

    Good & Bad

The staff in the Chalet were lovely, very friendly and made us welcome. The food was OK but as the staff have such a tight budget they did their best. That's the good bit ! The holiday Rep met us from the airport and drove us to the chalet up 'The Turns' whilst on her mobile !!! Eventually delivered our boots and skis, 24 hours later, and arrived Monday morning to make sure all was well, and that was the last we saw of her !! No information was given about the area and the local bus. I found out myself about the wonderful walks in the area and where the bus went from & to. Like most holidays there are excursions to go on. There were local helicopter flights, Husky rides and Ski-do rides, to name but a few, but none of these were mentioned to us. I appreciate people come here for the skiing, and apparently this is great, but as a none skier I was disappointed with the lack of info available and the Apres wasn't brilliant. When it came to the end of our holiday the staff/rep didn't know the details ,no surprise !! It was only on the Thur night that the Rep came, at 10.00pm !! to tell us the departure details !! COMPLACENCY is the only word I can think of to sum up the whole Rocket Ski experience, !!!! Have to mention the stink !!! which came from the ski room !! The staff informed it was coming from the freezer !!!!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !!

Fantastic location right next to the piste!

Basic chalet with friendly staff, good size rooms, jacuzzi and sauna. Cleanliness left a little to be desired, but in all a fantastic location right next to the piste. Little far from the bright lights & bars of the town and the bus is a bit hit and miss!! Great holiday
