    Listen up “Stars Snobs” 👂🏻

    rating01 Jan 2026

Ok, listen up you “stars snobs”….we also never stay in anything under 4 just for consistency and knowing generally what to expect. I have read a lot of other reviews here saying “this is really a three star”…and I’ve see the property respond how they are proud to have very recently received their fourth star. It shows! The staff is fabulous. Jenny was a treat at check in, and due to her recommendation, just a couple hours later we were at the basilica seeing this fabulous light show and view of the city. Breakfast was adorable and varied. Staff was so so so kind and really felt like when you stay in a BnB, and they have the little pantry off to the side where they make your coffee and bring it to you. I have also seen people say things about the safety when they see it’s on this pedestrian strip and has a long hallway to the doors up to hotel level. And that’s true, there’s a small, very well-lit, hallway then stairs and elevator access only by buzzing reception. And when you get to reception (which is staffed 24hrs a day) you can see a big monitor with a dozen camera angles. We never once felt unsafe, and even on New Years Eve, on the first floor, facing the front exterior right across from McDonalds, we heard nothing all night. The rooms are really really quiet and walls not thin and noisy. We also had our small dog and they were so kind and accommodating. As for the room size and vibe, it felt like rooms you’d find in midtown NYC, tight space, the pops of color, darker interior, modern but with a personality. Loved it!! We kicked the radiators off since they are no joke. But after that, our little cozy room was adorable and perfect for our four night stay. The bathroom was also renovated and very spacious. Also in a fabulous area with shops, bars, cafes, restaurants, anything and everything. We parked our mid-size SUV down at Place Bellecour garage which was just a 7 minute walk up the pedestrian street. The Alexandra offers a small garage and looked cute but we don’t love squeezing in tight spaces when we really don’t need to. Overall, 10/10 recommend this spot.So back to the stars rating nonsense….we ALSO booked the “5 stars” Royal Hotel on the corner of Place Bellecour. No shade, but for DOUBLE the price, the reviews on that one were rancid. The noise, the old decor and quality of the upkeep of the rooms, the small and old bathrooms, the restaurant closed AND the noise of the construction of the restaurant. I could go on. Our final evening in town, we went to the bar for cocktail and immediately felt the chill in that place. Soulless. No holiday decor in lobby and lights were off when we got there around 5, so it just felt like we were crashing a closed place. The vibe was cold and while the cocktails were yummy, and the waiter seemed nice and made great drinks, even he lacked a warmth we’ve seen elsewhere. He was very formal (which may be what this property wants being a fancy self-proclaimed 5 star. Mmk.)SO. If you are like us, and usually don’t choose “city hotels” that may seem simpler and more budget/efficient….boutique is the *exact* word I’d use for Alexandra. It’s cozy, a little cheeky, and beyond kind and warm. Don’t let the stars shenanigans get in your head. NATHALIE DUPUY, General Manager at Hotel Alexandra, responded to this review Hello Thank you for sharing such a detailed and positive experience at Hotel Alexandra Lyon. We are delighted that you found our staff, especially Jenny, fabulous and that our recommendations enhanced your visit to the Basilica. We're glad to hear you enjoyed the varied breakfast, the quiet, well-lit corridors, the 24-hour reception and the pet-friendly service. Your comments about the modern yet characterful rooms, the renovated bathroom and the convenient location near the stores and Place Bellecour are much appreciated. We also appreciate your comparison with other establishments and your approval of our hotel's atmosphere. Yours sincerely Reception
