Location

The hotel is located close to Perrache train station and a district packed with art galleries and antique shops. The Old Town is just a 20-minute walk away, while guests can reach both the “Croix Rousse” district and the Basilica of Fourvière within 25 minutes via public transport. Lyon Saint-Exupéry International Airport is approx. 30 km from the hotel.

The hotel was built in 1890. 14 single rooms and 23 double rooms are located on 3 storeys and can be reached by lift. Multilingual staff (English, German, French) at the reception are happy to assist guests at the reception desk round the clock. Check-in and check-out are available 24 hours a day. Amenities include a baggage storage service and a safe. Wireless internet access is provided in public areas. The hotel offers a number of facilities for guests with disabilities.     I booked this hotel as it was close to Perrache bus and railway station which worked out perfectly. Its very quaint, lovely staff and for what I paid satisfactory. My room was a tad small and the bathroom more like a broom cupboard but as I was in and out a lot, it still suited my needs. The bed linen was of good quality however and everything was very clean. I think that 2 nights is enough, but for convenience I was happy.     Check-out wasn't until midday. I had the do not disturb sign on my door; yet staff (I can assume it was housekeeping) tried to unlock my door at 1030am before I yelled that I'm in here.. ridiculous and felt like absolutely no privacy.There is no lock on the inside of the door / even a door lock chain, so anyone with a key can simply open up the door.Safety was just also a concern at this point too.I booked a single room as it was just for one night I required.Rather bad rust in the bathroom (pictured).The bathroom is smaller than Harry Potter's closet, the shower is more like a wet room and not very practical if you were staying longer than one night.If you are a light sleeper good luck because every single noise travels through from the road noise outside to the noise from people walking, chatting and clunking things in the hallway. It is as loud to think that they are making all this noise in the room itself. I'm not even a light sleeper and this noise disturbed me. My room was on the 2nd floor.Even for one night I wouldn't book this hotel again.Do yourself a favour and book somewhere better.     4 Tripadvisor points in the Affordable-hotels-series. Simplon is not your Carltonsavoyritz and from outside looks dated. Inside is cozy, tidy and with friendly receptionists. Rooms obviously come in different sizes, mine was spacious, and very nice. Bathroom a tad dated, but everything works and is clean. And I came to see Lyon, not the age of bathroom tiles. Breakfast was as well pretty good with all the things I appreciate, especially 3 different juices. Now the location; Perrache station with many different connection points to metro, bus, tram…very near, only few minutes to walk. If you consider the proximity of Viex Ville very important, that’s a pretty long way from here by foot, but doable, 20ish minutes, public trans again avalaible (nuy the 24h, 48h card from metrostation, works in metro, bus, tram. Use google for routes and timetbles, buses come when they happen to come).Traditional keys, leave at the 24h reception when going out. Lobby tiny, but nice deco with old velo-photos.Nice walkin street very near too, starts from the park. Restaurants here too, but density increases moving upwards on the map.All in all, considering the price for 2 nights, Simplon deserves 4 in the 3 star hotel series. I liked it.
