Utterly vile hygiene, broken lifts, stomping above my head and completely unliveable conditions

    rating17 May 2026

The rooms look modern but these are my experiences:Location warning : this hostel is located at the top of a brutally grueling steep hill, if you are travelling with suitcases God help you! Dredging your bags up this incline and steep Mount Everest stairs after a long travel day is a joke and it gets worst when you arrive. Security and entrance : the main entrance walkway is uncontrollable bottleneck, it gets completely blocked by rude public event (not guests) goers who drink smoke and actively shout comments at paying guests trying to enter, security does nothing to keep the walkway clear or the path safe ! Dorm rooms: zero enforcement of basic house rules my first shared room was turned into a massive jumble sale by a guest who had large boxes multiplied suitcases across the entire floor heavy stomping and loud paper rustling at the crack of dawn. Sixth floor moved broken accessibility the lift broke I had to sit and wait in the lobby for over one hour while exhausted for thr lift to be fixed no way to carry my suitcase up the huge flights of stairs and no one offered either! The absolute breaking point of this stay was the disgusting state of the room environment. A group of guest arrived who created an utterly vile unbearable stench after using the facilities completely fouling the air in the entire dorm. I have never experienced anything so foul and stomach turning. The smell in the toilet was completely repulsive I had to open a window and spray my own DETTOL spray just to make the room briefly habitable! I even complained directly to reception about it however their only response was to bring air freshener which did absolutely nothing to mask the severe odor! The room became completely unliveable due to the lack of basic hygiene from the guests and the ineffective response from management. No one should be subjected to this foul smell. The rooms do not have thr air conditioning on- it is controlled downstairs by reception even though you see a control in your room - basically you are breathing in foul regurgitation of air which stinks! No fresh air as the other people do not want the window open - maybe due to the outdoors music and crowds downstairs in communal areas.

    Just ok

We stayed in a private room. Positives- comfortable beds, friendly staff at check-in. Negatives - the restaurant has a private events each night. Our last night had a very loud dj music in the courtyard that you could hear from all rooms. If you needed to go to bed early, you were out of luck. Would be nice if they would put this on their website. The “hearty breakfast “ was overpriced at 9 euros, and didn’t have any protein besides yogurt. Then the toppings ran out quickly and weren’t replaced. Also, they turn off the air conditioning for the season without informing you. It was warm while we were there and we still needed it. Yes, you can open the windows but then you get cigarette smoke and dj noise from the courtyard coming in. So, not the most comfortable experience. Comfortable and great atmosphere.

The hostel had a good location, very very nice common facilities, food and drinks. Nice and friendly staff. Possibility of late check in. Comfortable and private dormatory. Private charging area and light by the bed. Locker for each bed and in general very clean. There was sadly no way to manage the room temperature, so it was a bit cold. Also the bed cubicle was painted black, would have been nicer with a color to not make it so dark even when light is turned on. Great value for money

I had a great 6 day stay at Pilo. The pods are a great way to have a bit of privacy and feel like you're more in your own space, though don't be fooled – it's still fundamentally a hostel, but loads better if you find having to interact with people a bit awkward. The attached coffee shop/bar/restaurant is great. I was quite unwell one night which was a nightmare in a shared room, probably equally if not moreso for the other people in the room but the Pilo staff were so helpful.I think my only real niggle is that whilst the bedding is perfectly serviceable and the beds comfy enough (and, fundamentally, you'd be a fool to expect luxury high thread count linen at these prices) it would be so, SO much nicer with relatively little outlay with some better pillows (also, it's in the name!) Manon D'elia, Guest Services / Front Office at People Lyon Hotel, responded to this review Dear Kieran,Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience at the Pilo Lyon. We're really happy to hear you enjoyed your 6-day stay with us and that you appreciated the privacy of our pods and the atmosphere of our coffee shop, bar, and restaurant. We're also very glad our team could support you during a difficult moment.Thank you as well for your feedback regarding the bedding and pillows : we’re always looking for ways to make Pilo even better and will take your suggestion into consideration. We look forward to welcoming you back in Lyon!Warmest regards,Pilo Lyon Team - Antonio.
