  We loved this hotel. Hosted by the lovely Francisco, we were welcomed warmly and always made to feel at home. Extra requests were always supported, and a kinder staff you could not find anywhere. We were even helped into our airport taxi and waved goodbye.The location is astounding. A historic building, look out your window and to the left to see Notre Dame Cathedral right across the road. The Shakespeare bookshop is below, and a park across the road. Multiple restaurants surround you. This is a one star hotel which is 5 Star location and service. Thank you for having us!

  Funky, charming, tiny - not for everyone.

  The Esmeralda is an utterly charming, tiny hotel. The location is unbeatable: it is across the river from Notre Dame, and around the corner from Shakespeare & Co. It is imbued with history and furnished with funky antiques. Also, while they do take credit cards, the check out invoice is written out by hand. That said - it's not for everyone - and it's not the George V. There's not elevator - there's a creaky winding staircase with amazing wallpaper. There are no amenities to speak of, there's no air-conditioning, and there were only two pillows on our bed. But throw open the big casement windows and holy moly!Plus we stayed there on our first trip to Paris like 35 years ago, so of course we had to go back.

  Great location, super helpful staff/owner who was very chatty and offered lots of recommendations and held luggage for us. Also felt like a very safe area with a lovely view of the Notre Dame. It is very old fashioned and could perhaps do with some modernising but for 2 nights it suited us really well and was clean! It’s very authentic and added to our Parisian experience.

  Great location with oodles of history. View of Notre Dame from our bedroom window is priceless.Our room was very small but OK for one night and when we left the next morning the Owner couldnt have been more helpful when there were no taxis. Big shout out to him and thank you.

  Like a trip "down the rabbit hole," I loved my stay at Hotel Esmeralda. I was a solo female travelling in the summer. The front desk staff were so kind to me. The man helped me carry my suitcase all the way to the top floor when I arrived late at night. I had room 17 on the topmost floor with a beautiful view of Notre Dame and the Square. The rooms are "bare bones" with flea-market quality furnishings. However---this "patina" is what gives the ancient hotel its charm. The creaky spiral staircase and stone walls are original and I actually loved climbing the 4 stories to my room every day, thinking about all who had stayed there before me. I arrived the day after Jane Birkin passed away and the front desk showed me a picture of her at Hotel Esmeralda from "back in the day" and told me how proud they were that she and Serge had once stayed there. All-in-all, it's the most unique hotel in Paris with the most beautiful view. IT IS SO NOT THE RITZ--but that is the whole point.
