Terrible noise issue and staff lack of ability to problem solve.

    rating14 Mar 2026

A small boutique hotel with a striking black façade, La Mondaine initially gives the impression of somewhere stylish and intimate. As you enter, reception sits immediately to the left beside a small sitting area and bar, decorated in an eclectic style with touches like leopard-print cabinetry that seem to aim for a modern-Victorian feel. It has 6 floors with 3 rooms per floor and 2 on the 6th. There is a small lift. However, the biggest issue with this hotel is the street noise, and it’s something anyone booking here should be aware of. Rooms facing the street are directly above a café and opposite a restaurant, meaning noise carries well into the night and starts again early in the morning. Conversations, chairs scraping, and general street activity are clearly audible in the room. For light sleepers, this can make it very difficult to rest. It’s not a minor inconvenience—it significantly affects the overall stay.Room 33 (3rd floor)Each floor has only three rooms. Room 33 is one of the two facing the street and unfortunately suffers heavily from the noise problem. Because of this, the room quickly became uncomfortable for sleeping and we requested to move. The décor is certainly bold: avocado-green walls with gold panel trims and cherub details, fox-marble lower panels, and some rather unusual artwork—including photographs of nude nuns. The curtains resemble something inspired by Klimt, with multicoloured threads and gold sparkle. The bathroom is very compact. The toilet is tucked behind the door, meaning if someone opens it while you’re seated you’ll likely take the door to the knees. Black tiles with white grout looked nice, though the floral wallpaper was fraying slightly at the edges. The bed itself was comfortable enough, but the pillows were very soft and flat—two between two people wasn’t really adequate. A throw on the bed looked rather worn, raising some questions about hygiene. Storage was minimal: no proper wardrobe, just a rail behind a curtain, and there were no tea or coffee-making facilities.Because of the persistent noise, we were moved to Room 61 (top floor).Room 61 (6th floor)This floor has two larger rooms and faces the internal courtyard, making it much quieter and far more suitable for sleeping. Décor again leans heavily into the hotel’s theatrical aesthetic: leopard-print carpets, pink walls with black studded panelling, and a mix of 19th-century paintings and etchings. The lower wall panels mimic marble but are actually painted. The room itself was larger and more comfortable overall. However, the bathroom had a significant design flaw—there is no proper shower curtain or screen, so the entire floor becomes wet after showering.Housekeeping was also disappointing. After cleaning, fluff still remained on the floor, used wine glasses were left unwashed, and hair in the sink hadn’t been removed. The bed had been made, but the overall cleaning felt incomplete.Another point to consider: in winter this could be quite a cold stay. The central heating did not appear to be on, and although there is a temperature regulator, it wasn’t clear whether it actually controlled anything.OverallLa Mondaine has a distinctive and theatrical style, but the street noise in front-facing rooms is a serious issue and something the hotel should be far more upfront about. Combined with inconsistent housekeeping and staff who didn’t appear particularly proactive in resolving problems, the stay ultimately fell short of the boutique experience it aims to offer.

Eclectic uniquely themed hotel that captures post war style and ambiance. Small rooms but full of character and decor that will stir the imagination. Friendly hotel staff. Fantastic location for a weekend getaway. I will return to this hotel again.

    Not staying there again!

    rating20 Nov 2024

The best part of this hotel is the neighborhood. Once inside, it’s all downhill. The lobby needs to be cleaned and have the carpet stretched. So guests don’t trip. It’s supposed to be an old bordello, so they play it up but it just looks cheap. Some of the seating in the small reception is very uncomfortable and don’t even try to order a latte! They served coffee w cold milk, a la USA, except we call it coffee n cream and not paying 8 E.The Elevator is very quaint, tiny but it works. We had a room w a ceiling mirror, but no storage, we lived out of the suitcase, that we had to close up, otherwise w couldn’t walk to the bed. The bathroom was very modern but again no shelves and had to maneuver to the toilet. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
