A Welcoming and Comfortable Boutique Hotel with Old World Charm

    rating06 May 2026

Rick Steves got it right. This boutique hotel is charming and friendly. Jean-Jacques, the owner, is attentive to his guests to make sure they are well taken care of. Angel and Marie are perfect receptionists, welcoming guests and catering to every need. The location is convenient to the sites and restaurants. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The home-made cake served at breakfast and made by Jean-Jacques is delicious. We recommend ACR for a quiet and charming visit to Ambroise. MAIGNAN, at Hotel Au Charme Rabelaisien, responded to this review Dear Margaux,The entire team would like to sincerely thank you for your wonderful review! Authentic, Friendly hotel in then heart of Amboise

    rating23 Apr 2026

This private and perfectly situated hotel emits a wonderfully warm and comfortable feeling. Authentic, friendly French welcome set the tone for the entire stay. At arrival we were shown to a wonderful room with views of the famed castle. While lovely, we were also offered a ground floor setting with its own private outdoor garden patio. Our choice was the ground floor setting. The room was spacious, quiet and well appointed with a larger then normal bathroom. Breakfast (additional) was served daily and consisted of a wonderful array of exceptional scrambled eggs, many many pastries, salmon, meats and jams, An excellent meal and value. Dinners were at the owners personal recommendation and were just a 5 minute walk, Each had a different yet fully authentic feel. Two were very non touristy while the third in the main square was fine with a view of the castle. A true bonus was the private parking at the enclosed garage with a key fob to open the gated garage. The owner is a true professional who engages with a staff that is equally friendly. MAIGNAN, at Hotel Au Charme Rabelaisien, responded to this review Dear Mr. Williams,Thank you very sincerely for your wonderful review following your stay at Le Charme Rabelaisien. Amboise, Charming and Challenged Lodging

    rating19 Nov 2025

Hoteliers in Amboise are challenged by operating inside very old buildings. Our room (Room 8, Executive) was spacious but in an elongated rectangular shape, which caused placement of a love seat away from the bed and the safe/refrigerator/coffee maker inside the bathroom. The bathroom was very spacious with separate bathtub and shower. We encountered a tub leak the first night that was fixed the next day. There is a tiny elevator in the building. Once on our room's floor, there was a set of stairs inside the room's entry door that goes up into the room. These stairs are a bit of a safety hazard at the top (for children and seniors using the toilet at night). There was a gate in the room that could be installed, but part of it had come apart, so we just used a chair to block the stairs. Windows in the room had great views! The street in front of the hotel is very narrow, though it does get traffic at certain times of the day. The hotel is located away from the commercial center in a quieter place, but only a short walk to shops, restaurants, bakeries, a grocery store, laundromat, and local attractions. The staff were helpful. A young woman checked us in and guided us to our room. A couple gents working the off-hours had limited English skills but helped us as much as they could. We checked out during breakfast hours. Another woman we had not met before, who we believe might be the owner, broke away from her breakfast duties to help us, including waking the sleeping driver out front and confirming he was indeed our ride. This hotel is as the name says, charming, plus its well-located and has a helpful staff, but contends with the challenges of an old building. We're guessing the other hotels in Amboise face the same challenges, of course one person's "challenge" may be another's charm. Amboise is definitely worth a visit, and this hotel very much deserves your consideration. MAIGNAN, at Hotel Au Charme Rabelaisien, responded to this review Dear Globalcitizen2,Thank you for your extremely thoughtful and detailed review following your stay at Le Charme Rabelaisien. We recently acquired this charming hotel in February, and we have indeed made a few changes to the layout and features in your room. For everything else, however, we wanted to preserve the same spirit created by our predecessors, while enhancing the property with all the charm of a grand 18th-century townhouse and transforming it into a Boutique Hotel & Spa for the greatest comfort of our future guests. Please accept my warmest regards.Kind regards,Jacques
