Lovely chateau in a spectacular setting

    rating05 Mar 2026

Had a wonderful 2-night stay at this charming chateau. The walls are steeped in history, and the lovely host, Olivier, has a million stories about the chateau and the surrounding area. He is a mine of information and happy to share his recommendations for wine-tasting and restaurants.Breakfast was delicious and plentiful, with everything being both fresh and locally produced.Would not hesitate to recommend Chateau de Perreux to anyone looking for a restful and enchanting few days in the Loire region.

    Charming Chateau Stay

    rating04 Sept 2025

We were in the Loire Valley to attend a wedding and needed a place to stay for just one night to attend a pre-wedding event that was far from the actual wedding site. The Chateau de Perreux was extremely accommodating! We needed to arrive before the scheduled check in time, and would not be back to the Chateau before the staff left for the night. They had someone available to give us the key to our room, and another staff member rushed over the the Chateau to greet us and offered to show us the grounds. We were in room 8, which amazingly was in the highest part of the Chateau, in the mansard turreted roof. The room was very comfortable and and the tub and shower luxurious! The bed was up a very steep set of stairs, almost a ladder, this room is amazig, but not for anyone with mobility issues. The Chateau continues to go through renovations in the troglodyte portions of the building, which should be beautiful when completed. The renovations had no impact on our stay. The breakfast that was part of the rate was simple, yet filling. you could order off the menu for an additional charge. As we were checking out, we had a nice chat with someone I believe is the owner. He gave us some good recommendations about sites in the area. The Chateau is situated on the Cisse River and has a lovely lawn that stretches in front of the chateau. There is also a pool, but it was raining while we were there, so we did not use it, nor even see it.

Disappointing Stay - Mismanaged Property and Poor Conditions

    rating06 Aug 2025

To be transparent, I did not want to stay at Château de Perreux even before we arrived, due to a deeply frustrating experience involving the owner, Olivier Fructus. The previous night, my daughter, son-in-law, and two young granddaughters checked in only to discover that their reserved room had been given away. They were placed instead in a two-level turret room, connected by a narrow spiral staircase — entirely unsuitable for small children. There was only one bathroom, requiring constant trips up and down the staircase, and the room was uncomfortably hot.The owner insisted this was the room they had booked and argued with them at length before finally realizing his mistake. Even then, he never made any effort to reconcile the situation. His attitude was defensive, dismissive, and unacceptable. The issues didn’t end there. The rooms are sparsely furnished with mismatched furniture, the bed linens are rough, and the towels are thin and worn. We chose not to eat breakfast there for two reasons: the €17 price did not seem worth it, and it wasn’t served until 8:00 a.m., too late for our planned day of sightseeing. We had to leave early to meet our family at another location. As for the property itself, whatever exterior charm the château may once have had is completely lost once you step inside. The interior is dark, musty, and poorly maintained. The owner explains this by pointing out that the back of the building is a cave — yet we visited many wine caves and troglodyte dwellings across France without encountering this kind of damp, unpleasant atmosphere. His explanation about reducing energy usage for environmental reasons seems more like an excuse for cutting costs at the expense of guest comfort. The photos online do not reflect the current condition of the property. The fountain is dry, the rooms are drab, and the overall state of the interior is in shambles. It’s clear this place is being run on the cheap, and it shows — which is a disgrace for a property that calls itself a château. We had meals at and visited similar properties in the region, and frankly, we wish we had stayed at any one of them instead.

A memorable stay at a castle

    rating04 Aug 2025

Our stay at Château de Perreux was truly one-of-a-kind. This beautifully preserved château offers a very original experience, blending historical charm with modern comfort. The setting is stunning and peaceful, and the swimming pool in the château’s park was a lovely spot to relax after exploring the Loire Valley. The staff were kind, attentive, and genuinely helpful, which added a warm and welcoming touch to our stay.We stayed in a room that was partly built into the rock, which made it feel incredibly authentic and special—something you don’t find every day! There was a slight damp smell, but it was expected in such an old and character-filled building. Honestly, it added to the atmosphere more than it detracted from the experience.Breakfast was a pleasant surprise —simple yet very good, with local and fresh products that made for a great start to the day.All in all, Château de Perreux is perfect for travelers looking for something different from the usual hotel experience. We’d definitely recommend it for its originality, peaceful setting, and historical charm.

    Strange experience

    rating25 Jun 2025

My husband and I have traveled the world, and this ranks as the "weirdest" place we've ever stayed. Aside from the fact that the road is closed from the direction "maps" usually leads people, we finally found a route to this hotel. It looks like a typical chateau... picturesque and surrounded by beautiful green grounds. Upon checking in, we were led to our room in the turret, which was so hot, that we were really sweating before even unpacking. We went down to the front desk, and the nice staff told us they had one cool room in an unfinished part of the chateau, which was built on the side of the mountain, with cave walls. Sensing we would not be getting a refund, we were led by a very nice lady (who carried our large suitcases for us) through construction, cobwebby circular staircase, jumped down a little hill, and finally got to our room. It was definitely cool/cold, felt wonderful, was new construction with beautiful paint, an in-room sauna, a kitchen, and a balcony with a hot tub and table. Although it was wonderfully cool, it was also damp and there were some ants, since it was actually stone ceiling and walls. The lady who cleans and helped with luggage is also the cook in the morning, and she is delightful. The dining room is beautiful. After 3 nights, we grew accustomed to the strange, somewhat treacherous trek to our room and had a great time sipping wine on our private balcony and laughing.
