  Nice hotel

  The hotel is located close to the Gesundbrunnen train station and public transport and a shopping centre.We had a comfort 2 p room at the back of the hotel. At night it was quiet. Room was clean. Bed was good. Personnel was helpful and friendly.

  Absolutely Shocking Experience - Avoid at All Costs

  I travel frequently as a tour manager for musicians, so I have stayed in countless hotels across Europe. This hotel stands out – but only for how appallingly bad the experience was.The problems began before arrival. We needed to extend our booking by one night and, because it was through Booking.com, the hotel refused to handle it directly. They also would not guarantee that we could stay in the same rooms, forcing us to reorganise the first night’s booking into fewer rooms for cost reasons.After an 11-hour drive from Calais, we arrived exhausted at around 11:45pm. At check-in, the staff member insisted our cancellation had not been processed – despite my having a confirmation email – and tried to charge us for three double rooms instead of the one double and one twin that were booked. Only after confused back-and-forth did he correct the amount.What followed was possibly the most incompetent check-in I have ever experienced. He repeatedly stopped processing our booking to chat with other guests about unrelated matters, despite it being nearly 1am and us having been on the road all day. When he finally gave us keys, they were for the wrong rooms. After more fumbling, delays, and interruptions, we finally reached our rooms at 1am.If that wasn’t bad enough, the same staff member knocked on my door at 9:45am - demanding I go to reception “within 30 minutes” due to a problem with the booking. When I went down, a different staff member told me I now had to pay for three double rooms after all, refusing to return my key until I paid. Despite explaining everything from the night before, I was forced to pay again (she would not give my key back until I paid) just to access our rooms.This staff member was openly rude, dismissive, and aggressive. I asked if our musicians in the twin room could check out slightly later, as they had been assured that this was fine the night previous, they had arrived late and had a show that evening, but she flatly refused. At 11:10am, those guests were woken by a staff member shouting at their door to get out.Across two days, we were met with incompetence, disrespect, and hostility from staff who made no effort to help, sympathise, or resolve issues. In all my years of professional and personal travel, I have never experienced customer service this appalling.This hotel should be avoided at all costs. I will be making sure our promoters and partners no longer book here, and I strongly urge other travellers to steer clear.

  Beware of unauthorised card charges

  Our early morning train left from Gesundbrunnen station so we were looking for a hotel close by. The Ocak Hotel is a 10 minute walk from the railway station and 5 minutes to the Gesundbrunnen shopping centre. A few days before our stay we started to receive emails from the hotel asking us to check in. We had booked through Expedia and we assumed that Expedia had passed our details onto the hotel. All the emails were in German and we had to use translation software to convert them to English. At check-in we were given our room keys and entered a decent hotel room. I decided to check reviews and was shocked to see so many bad reviews. I couldn't understand why. The room was nice. It was clean. We'd got a good rate.Later than evening I was checking my credit card statement online and saw a debit from the Ocak Hotel for €38. I assumed that this was a security deposit but checked with reception the following morning. No. It wasn't a security deposit. It was a charge for breakfast. I told the man at reception that we had a rate that included breakfast and showed him the Expedia confirmation. He showed me a couple of things on his system and said I needed to speak to Expedia as Breakfast wasn't included.Breakfast was ok - but certainly not worth €19pp.I contacted Expedia who were very good but, two days later told me that hotel management had refused to budge and I would not be refunded.However, despite this, my card was refunded a few days later. The moral of the story - I wouldn't check in online. It didn't save time at the counter and be careful with card charges. They took money off me without asking

  The hotel is very clean, pretty small, well-maintained but very basic with no room service. There is a coffee machine in the room but few toiletries in the bathroom so take your own supplies. The location is central and fine if you're not planning on spending much time in the hotel.
