Location

This hotel is a 25-minute drive from the centre of Berlin and its many tourist attractions. Berlin Brandenburg Airport is less than 500 metres from the hotel, which is around 2.5 km from the A113 motorway.

Facility

322 non-smoking rooms, including 3 junior suites, 12 suites and 243 single rooms, are located on 5 storeys and can be reached by lift. The friendly staff at the reception desk are happy to answer any questions. Amenities include a cloakroom, baggage storage service, safe and currency exchange service. Wireless internet access in public areas (no extra charge) allows guests to stay connected. The tour desk offers assistance with booking excursions. The hotel has wheelchair-accessible facilities. There are a number of shops as well. Additional facilities include a newspaper stand. Guests arriving by car can park their vehicles in the garage (for a fee) or in the car park. Further services and facilities include translation services, room service, a laundry service and a coin-operated laundry. Complimentary newspapers are available.

Rooms are equipped with air conditioning and individually adjustable heating. All rooms are carpeted and include a double bed or a king-size bed. A safe, a minibar and a desk are also available. Bathrooms are equipped with a shower and a bathtub, as well as a hairdryer. Guests can also book wheelchair-friendly rooms with wheelchair-accessible bathrooms.     Very convenient and fresh-new. Quality of workmanship however leaves some reservations. Bathroom fittings of poor quality. Leaking.

    The perfect airport hotel

    I booked this hotel in a hurry, or so I thought. To make a long story short, when I arrived at 11pm at night, there was no booking. It was all my fault; I assume the booking didn't go through because my credit card had expired. That might not be a drama for someone who can use every room, but I'm a wheelchair user. The receptionist saved me, sold me a wheelchair-accessible room plus breakfast without exploiting my situation, and I could relax after this little shock. They were very friendly and professional.It was my second stay at this hotel, and I was there because I was already quite impressed the first time I went there last year. For an airport hotel, it's really great. Everything looks new; the room was spotless clean. The only downside in the accessible bathroom was that there was not a single shelf or area where I could put my stuff. So I had to use the shower seat. A shelf next to the sink and toilet would be great, and there is enough space. That was really the only thing that bothered me; anything else was perfect.The breakfast was totally worth the price. I was actually happy I went. It's a proper German breakfast buffet which kept me full for the whole day.The hotel was quiet, and I had a really good rest. The room was spacious, and the bed was just perfect. I will definitely come back if I arrive very late by plane instead of heading to the city centre quite late.

    Very poor customer service

    Absolutely terrible customer service. I booked a pre-paid room that I knew couldn’t be cancelled, however I’ve never previously not been able to change dates. After my flight was cancelled and couldn’t be rebooked for the same day, I requested a date change. Despite there being availability at a lower rate than I paid, and being unable to explain to me where on my booking it said changes weren’t possible, they refused my request with no explanation. It’s been a long time that I’ve experienced such inflexibility from a large hotel chain, and they absolutely should be able to point to the ‘no changes allowed’ policy on my booking conditions, which I can’t see, or at least given some kind of explanation. They did of course kindly offer to help me should I wanted to make a new booking with them… definitely not. I’ll go for the hotel next door. It seems the booking was made through a third party, which can often come with specific terms and conditions, including restrictions on changes.     How bad customer care ruins a nice hotel

    The experience is mixed, but in the end the feeling is of disappointment. Let me start with the positives. If you need an airport hotel in Berlin, the location is perfect. Of course, it is an airport hotel, so it is by the airport, which is where it is supposed to be. The rooms are nice and clean, the food at the restaurant is decent (Schnitzel is good), and the restaurant staff is friendly. But…The reception is another thing. First of all, if you are in line to check in and an airline crew comes, they will just jump right ahead of you, encouraged by the check in staff. Happened to me three times. You are just supposed to wait. Also, in this last visit, something I have not really seen before in any hotel happened, and I am top tier with 3 hotel chains. Checking in 2 hours before check in time at ANY hotel two things usually happen. Either they do not have a room ready for you (a bummer but understandable) or they do have a room for you, and in such case…. Thanks!. But not at the Steigenberger. No sir. They might have a room, but they charge you 30 euros if you want it 2 hours early. I expressed my surprise and that I had not really seen that before (yes, if you arrive 5 am and tell the Hotel in advance, any hotel might charge you for that, but at 1 PM with check in starting at 3 PM?!?!). And the very rude check in lady just told me “Sir, I travel a lot, my father is a diplomat, so I know”. WOW!! That is a first… even for me. What a rude, low service attitude. And to top it, her colleague started to laugh. I could not believe it!!! Anyhow I paid the 30 euros (what to do) and got my room. Late evening I ordered room service. A burger -no onions, extra bacon- two coke zero, and a chocolate brownie. 70 euros, and got charged 3.5 euros for the extra bacon. Ok. But when they brought it up, they forgot the drinks. I told the waitress and she said she would bring it. In the meantime I started with the Burger. No Bacon at all. When the Waitress came back with the sodas I made her aware of it, and showed her the invoice where they had indeed charged me for the extra bacon. She smiled, said sorry, and left. No bacon, and no reimbursement for the charge.Upon check out next day, I let the lady at reception know. Again, no offer to reimburse what they have wrongly charged me for. Not even an apology.It is not about the wrongly charged 3.5 euros. But the principle is just wrong!So. In summary….there are other choices at Berlin Branderburg airport, like the Intercity. The Steingenburger is nice but the staff does not know what customer care means. And it is a pity, because it is a nice hotel.
