Very noisy hotel- 24 hour bar area and communal areas and front of hotel smoking area very noisy til early hours. Building work going on right round the hotel- entire hotel covered in scaffolding. Due to noise we got to sleep early hours then were awakened by builders drilling right outside our window from 8/8.30 am. Staff were friendly but shrugged re noise. Lifts and communal areas often had spilled beer / grubby and untidy. Hotel location is the only positive point about the visit and definitely would not recommend

IT WAS A HORRIFYING EXPERIENCE! A MAN ENTERED OUR FEMALE-ONLY ROOM AT 2 AM, SLEPT THERE FOR 3 HOURS AND LEFT!!!

    rating01 Nov 2025

My friend and I travelled to Cologne for one night and booked a female-only room for four people at a&o Hostel Köln Neumarkt. However, when we arrived, we were given a six-bed room instead. The real shock came at around 2 a.m. when a man entered our room using a key card, climbed onto one of the top bunk beds, and slept there for nearly three hours. I was woken up by his loud snoring, and my friend, who saw him enter and walk through the room, was too terrified to speak or move, fearing for her safety. We were four women in the room, and the fact that an unknown man could access it so easily was horrifying. He had even set an alarm for 5 a.m. and quietly left after it rang.As two Muslim women, this incident felt like a severe breach of safety, trust, and privacy. We had paid extra for a female-only room specifically to avoid such risks. In the morning, we reported the incident to the reception. The staff member, a young Black woman whose name started with “L,” confirmed that a man had indeed been assigned a bed in our room but appeared completely unbothered. She casually said that “a&o sometimes makes errors and assigns rooms randomly, even to men in female-only rooms.” That statement alone is deeply concerning. Later, when we explained how shaken and traumatised my friend was, she gaslighted us by saying we should think about her mental health too, which was absolutely inappropriate and dismissive. When we asked for the manager, she removed her name badge, claimed the manager was unavailable, and pretended to call the headquarters, reading out a random booking number that didn’t match ours (we have this on record). Eventually, she handed us a generic business card with the names of the supposed managers, Franziska Dessaules and Hendrik den Boer, and told us to email feedback@aohostels.com because there wasn’t much they could do now. Another male staff member joined the conversation and tried to justify the situation by saying that when rooms are fully booked, they might have to place men in female-only rooms. That explanation is completely unacceptable and unsafe. If the hostel is fully booked, they should inform guests that no rooms are available, not compromise the safety of the guests already staying at the hostel. After reading other reviews online, we discovered that this isn’t an isolated incident. There are multiple reports of people having unauthorised access to rooms at this same hostel. It is frightening that a&o continues to operate this way, disregarding guest safety and privacy. For women travellers, especially Muslim women, this is a dangerous and traumatic environment that should be avoided at all costs. We will be taking this incident up with the relevant authorities, but I am sharing this here as a warning to others. Please do not stay at a&o Hostel Köln Neumarkt. Pay a little more to stay somewhere that respects the safety and dignity of its guests and has proper security measures in place. This hostel is located in a shady area, poorly managed, and utterly negligent when it comes to guest protection.

Thought about review for Jeran and Alex for 4 seconds

    rating30 Jan 2025

I just wanted to say a big thank you to Jeran and Alex for sorting out our rather complex booking for the cycling team. They were both really polite and courteous, and it was clear that nothing was too much trouble. The rest of the staff were just as lovely, and we truly appreciate the effort everyone made to make our stay run smoothly. We’d definitely recommend this place to anyone in need of a friendly, accommodating spot.
