Cologne charm paired with efficiency in a timeless setting

    rating21 Apr 2026

Marriott hotels often look unremarkable from the outside and tend to have conservative interiors—dark colors, carpeting, marble bathrooms...—but they’re actually always lively, as they’re popular with conference and other groups, and are generally very clean with good service. This is also true of the Marriott Cologne, which at first glance isn’t particularly attractive, situated behind the train station, but is very centrally located (just a few minutes’ walk to the cathedral and downtown, and even closer to the Rhine or the Musical Dome (Moulin Rouge)). The value for money is right, the room size is good, and it’s quiet too. The small street in front of the hotel is traffic-calmed, like so many alleys and side streets in Cologne these days. What really stands out at the Marriott Cologne is the friendliness and efficiency of the staff: Starting with the amiable concierge, who greets you right at the entrance and asks if he can take care of your luggage or assist in any other way, to the receptionist who goes out of her way to arrange a lounge key because the room isn’t ready yet (at 11 a.m., so no surprise, of course), all the way up to the lounge on the 6th floor. This lounge offers an exquisite breakfast for Executive guests in the morning and a very good buffet in the afternoon and evening, featuring hot and (delicious) cold dishes, cheese, fruit, pastries, plenty of drinks, and is also attended to by an equally very nice and hospitable service team (3 people) who—and I’ve really only experienced this so far in the Ritz-Carlton Club Lounges in the U.S.—ask guests what they’d like to drink, serve at your table if you wish, and take the time for a little chat. The lounge even has outdoor seatings - balconies, tables and chairs, on the sunny and on the shadowy side of the 6th floor. Actually, I just wanted to grab a quick bite and then head to the gym. But instead, I stayed, let myself be pampered, and enjoyed the great view of the city and the magnificent sunset. A charming little Marriott in one of Germany’s most delightful cities—and I’m certainly not done visiting it yet. And the extra cost for the Executive Room was definitely worth it.

A lovely hotel in a very central location....

    rating04 Apr 2026

The hotel is situated about 20 minutes by taxi from the airport. It has a very central location, taxi rank outside and a 5 minute walk from the train station. The old town and the Rhine are just a 5 minute walk. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable, in particular at reception and the bar. The room was very functional and had everything you needed including an iron board and hairdryer. Safe was included L, no extra charge levied. The breakfast was very good, plenty of choice and there was an egg station, the omelettes were delicious. The in-house restaurant was called Cast Iton and we ate there one evening. The service was excellent and I can honestly say the fillet steak was probably one of the best I have ever eaten.....it was genuinely melt in your mouth tender.....It was our wedding anniversary and the hotel left us some chocolates and wine with a hand written card, a lovely touch and something that not all hotels do, so well done and thank you, it didn't go missed. Overall, a fantastic stay and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend and stay again. Thank you.

    0 Guest Satisfaction

    rating23 Dec 2025

Some hotels around the world seem to make the guest experience unnecessarily miserable. Unfortunately, my flight to Köln was very early from where I live, and my predicted arrival time was around 08:00 AM. Of course, I am aware that this is not the official check-in time, but when a hotel has availability from the previous night, it is common practice to try to assist guests, especially those arriving exhausted after an overnight flight. All you want at that point is one or two hours of sleep before starting to explore the city.I emailed the hotel through the OTA well in advance of my stay, but they never replied. I then emailed them again asking for priority, and received a standard response stating: “We have already updated your reservation with your arrival time. Kindly note that we cannot guarantee a check-in prior to 3pm, but will do our utmost to fulfill your wish.” I emailed them once more one day before arrival, and this time they did not reply at all.We arrived at the hotel exactly as predicted. Just a few hours earlier, I had checked availability on an OTA and saw that there were at least five available rooms in my booked category, Deluxe Room with one King Bed. Coming from the industry myself, I know this clearly indicates availability. Despite this, no room was allocated to us. The receptionist explained that housekeeping meetings take place at 11:30 and only afterward do they start checking rooms. Honestly, I did not buy this explanation. There were available rooms, and they simply chose not to allocate one. I even asked about possible conditions or alternatives, but there was no effort whatsoever. A big minus.Regarding the hotel itself, the location is very central, within a five-minute walk to the Central Train Station and the Dom, so there is nothing to complain about in that regard. The room was worn out, although the bed itself was comfortable. We were given a room on the first floor, room 137, with no view at all. There were no amenities in the room, not even slippers. You have to call reception to request slippers, supposedly for environmental reasons. I find this explanation unconvincing. The elevators are another major issue. They are extremely slow and it takes ages for one to arrive. Fortunately, we stayed on the first floor.Breakfast was acceptable, but nothing special. In fact, the only genuinely positive aspect of the stay was the lovely lady at the egg station, who was warm and friendly.Overall, this was an unpleasant stay at a cold and unfriendly hotel. I would recommend choosing another property that places more importance on people and guest experience. Sophia Dombrink, Guest Services / Front Office at Cologne Marriott Hotel, responded to this review Dear valued Guest,Warm greetings from the Cologne Marriott Hotel, and thank you for sharing your detailed feedback. We truly appreciate your perspective and deeply regret that we did not meet your expectations during your stay. Please accept our sincere apologies for the inconvenience upon your early arrival. We understand how exhausting overnight travel can be and how important it is to rest before starting your day. When rooms are available, we can always offer early check-in, usually with an additional fee. Leaving a guest waiting despite availability is not the standard we strive to uphold, and we are truly sorry this was your experience. We will address this internally and train our team to handle such situations with greater care.We also apologize for the disappointment regarding amenities. While some hotels provide bathrobes and slippers in every room, at our property these items are available in Executive Rooms and Suites as part of our sustainability efforts. We are always happy to provide them upon request, and we regret that this was not communicated clearly. We are aware that our guest rooms are not the newest and appreciate your understanding. Please rest assured that plans to modernize our rooms are underway to enhance comfort and style. We also apologize for the elevator waiting times and will review this internally.Thank you very much for your kind words about the colleague at the egg station; we will gladly share your compliment with her.We sincerely apologize for not delivering the level of Wonderful Hospitality. Always we aim to provide. Please let me know when you plan to return so I can personally ensure an unforgettable stay and all your expectations were met.Wishing you a wonderful Christmas season and looking forward to hearing from you.Best Wishes,Sophia DombrinkGuest Relations & Duty ManagerCologne Marriott Hotel+49 221 94222 5555

    Good hotel in excellent location

    rating23 Dec 2025

Good hotel in excellent location. We travelled from airport on S19 train and an easy walk to hotel. Tip: Use the exit opposite the Dom exit ( It has a McDonalds on the corner) then walk straight ahead from there to the hotel. Train tickets can be purchased at office in Station or use machines downstairs. Returns are 7 euros . Remember to validate ticket before boarding train. We arrived at hotel around 12.00 midday and were able to check in as our room was ready. The room had everything we needed . No complaints. Good choice at breakfast and no queuing. All the staff we came across were friendly and helpful. We were minutes walk from cathedral. Another tip, we went to cathedral just after 5.00 with no queuing and again in the morning around 9.00, no queues.
