    Classic hotel with friendly staff

    rating09 Dec 2025

As we in the UK know, nothing beats a Jet2 holiday, and I booked a stay in Cologne for four nights at the 3-star Flandrischer Hof for a very reasonable price. It was my first trip to Germany, and I planned to see the world-famous Cathedral and the Christmas markets.I arrived at Cologne Hauptbahnhof right in the middle of the city centre, and from there it was a 20-minute walk to the hotel. Flandrischer Straße veers to the right of the Hohenzollernring as you approach from the direction of the station, so it's worth looking at Google Street View to get your bearings. I walked everywhere including to and from the hotel, but the tram is a stone's throw away should you need it.I was greeted warmly when I arrived and given a form to fill out some personal details before being given directions to room 412. I did my best to use my (basic!) German, but all staff I spoke to had good English skills and were kind, helpful and professional. They also offered to store my luggage after check-out or to ring a taxi to help get me to the airport - I'd already planned my logistics but this was a really kind gesture and I appreciated it.There are elevators available, but I will always choose the stairs and was happy to see that they were easily accessible and not hidden behind any fire doors! The foyer is spacious with plenty of seating and tables around the corner, near the stairwells. There's also a little cabinet selling some souvenirs and jewellery.Once I got to my single room, I was pleasantly surprised by how large it was and how much space I had to unpack my items. The windows were huge, and you're able to open them to let in some fresh air (although be warned, there are no restrictors on them so be careful!). My room faced out onto Hohenzollernring so there was a fair bit of noise from the main road plus the Christmas market around the corner; I wore ear-plugs to sleep which made all the difference. The Haribo sweets on the pillow were a cute touch and the mattress was very comfy. The heating's kept on, but there was a plug-in desk fan to help circulate the air if I ran a bit hot during the night. There's some commentary on TripAdvisor about the old-fashioned decor - personally I found it classic and charming. The dark wooden panelling, matching furniture, gold accents and the soft lighting throughout the hotel made for a relaxing environment, and everything was very clean. The bathroom was also modern and well-lit with good-sized towels and a powerful shower.Heads up to fellow Brits that there isn't a tea-station or a personal kettle in the room (which are rather taken for granted in British hotels). Reception have a few kettles and they'll happily lend you one if there's any available, or they'll make you a tea/coffee when they're not busy at front-desk. If it's non-negotiable for you though, play it safe and pack your own travel-kettle, teabags and UHT sachets. The best thing about being so close to Hohenzollernring is that you're near some great restaurants, the Rudolfplatz Christmas market, a DM and a REWE City if you forget any essentials (for me, it was toothpaste, but I also bought some Lindt choco for souvenirs here too). There's also an Aldi within walkable distance. If you're a runner and staying over a weekend, Aachener Weiher parkrun is only 10 minutes' walk away and they were a very friendly bunch. WiFi is available and free to use on the hotel grounds, which was a godsend as my data was very patchy whilst out and about. There was plenty of choice for breakfast and I could have something different every day from the cold buffet. Lots of fruit and veg available as well as meats, breads and cheeses. There was a great selection of teas and coffees too. I had breakfast at different times each day, and no matter how busy it was there was always space to quietly sit and take your time. All in all, I'm really happy with my stay in Flandrischer Hof and I would recommend it to any traveller staying in Cologne. I'd love to come back to see the Carnival when my German has improved, so hopefully I'll see you all again soon!

Very average hotel, but decent location

    rating04 Oct 2025

I was allocated a room in section 1 where you have to carry your suitcases up several stairs yourself. The room I seemed like from the 1950’s. Basic brown colors, beds on wheels, a tiny television (which you cannot see from the bed), some not very comfortable chairs (also quite old basic style). The bar area was in the lobby, but was super tiny and the seating was not cost at all. It was like having a bear in the hall way.The hotel is however located near some nice restaurants, but at prices well above EUR 200 per night then this was not something I can recommend.

    Would not stay again

    rating06 Jun 2025

The location of the hotel is good with bar and restaurants around and a short walk to the cathedral. The breakfast was standard and ok for what I paid. The cleanliness was not up to a good standard. There were stains on the carpet and walls. The window had not been cleaned and had what looked to be cobwebs. There was a hole in the wall underneath the desk near the window leaving wires exposed. The pillow was flat, you need 2 at least to be comfortable. On my last evening there I noticed a tile on the ceiling wasn’t in place leaving a hole/gap in the ceiling. As you can imagine this was very unsettling especially as a solo female traveller.

    Nie wieder!

    rating26 Jan 2025

I’ve stayed at this hotel many times over the years, but this time was a particularly unpleasant experience due to a receptionist who made threats toward my husband and later myself. Guests should never have to suffer because your hotel system is incapable of grouping two separate reservations! On top of that, the prices for this hotel have skyrocketed, yet you get nothing in return—quite the opposite, actually. The (non-renovated business) room we stayed in was spacious but poorly laid out, with a small TV, dirty carpet, towels that smelled bad and cheap cups and supplies in the bathroom. To make matters worse, we had only lukewarm water to shower with throughout our entire stay, no matter what time of evening it was.Our friends stayed in a renovated business room, but it was three times smaller, incredibly dark and they couldn’t sleep because of street noise all night long, even though we specifically asked for a room overlooking the inner courtyard.Breakfast is supposed to run until 11 a.m. on weekends, but if you arrive at 10:15, there’s hardly anything left and what’s still there is dried out and unappetizing. The only thing this hotel has going for it is the cheaper hotelparking and a convenient location. However, for a little more cash, there are far better hotels in the same area. We’ve learned our lesson and will never return here, nor will we recommend it to our friends. Flandrischer Hof, Gästeservice/Empfang at Flandrischer Hof, responded to this review Dear Mr/Ms Jazworldwide,First of all, thank you for your honest and detailed feedback. We are truly sorry to hear that your experience during this stay was unpleasant, and we deeply regret that we did not meet our usual high standards. We are particularly concerned to hear about your experience with the receptionist. Threatening behavior is absolutely unacceptable, and we will investigate this incident internally to ensure that it does not happen again. We sincerely apologize for this and hope that this isolated event doesn’t overshadow the overall impression of our hotel.Additionally, we are sorry that the room did not meet your expectations. The issues you mentioned, such as the non-renovated room, the quality of the towels, and the water temperature, are not acceptable, and we will address these concerns immediately. We have already forwarded your comments to our housekeeping team to ensure that these matters are taken care of.We also apologize that the breakfast offering was not up to standard, and that noise from the street disturbed your sleep. We will review the breakfast selection and organization to ensure that guests who arrive later in the morning still have a fresh and appetizing choice.Your comment regarding the value for money is taken very seriously. The quality of our rooms and services should reflect the prices we charge, and we will use your feedback to improve our offerings going forward.Once again, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you experienced. We hope that you will consider giving us another chance to show you that we can provide the level of quality and service you expect. Should you ever consider staying with us again in the future, please feel free to contact us directly, and we would be happy to assist you personally.Best regards,Anil ÜnalHotel Flandrischer Hof
