Unsafe and distressing stay — left without help, forced to sleep on the floor, and harassed by guest in underwear

    rating29 Jun 2025

I’m a 20-year-old solo female traveler who often stays in hostels — this wasn’t my first rodeo, and I knew what to expect going in. My flight got in late, and I checked in remotely around 1:30–2:00 AM. I reached out upon the delay to let them know of my late arrival. When I got to my assigned bed (in a 6-bed mixed dorm), a man was already sleeping in it. There were no available beds, no staff on-site, no unlocked common area, and not even a single chair. I walked to nearby hotels to look for a room, but they were all full. I returned to the hostel and ended up trying to sleep in the stairwell. I called the hostel’s emergency line and reception — both went straight to voicemail. I want to emphasize this clearly: if something happens between midnight and 8 AM, there is no way to reach staff. I would never have booked this property if I had known that. Around 4:00 AM, while I was trying to rest on the stairs, a drunk man in revealing underwear approached me twice, about 15 minutes apart, asking me to unlock the floor. I told him to go away, feeling scared and completely helpless. After he left the second time, I used my key to sneak back inside, then locked myself in the bathroom out of fear and waited for a nearby coffee shop to open. Eventually, I heard him come in with help from another guest. I could hear him — and every snore — through the bathroom door. I sat for hours in the bathroom, which was one of the dirtiest I’ve ever seen — toilet paper all over the ground, a strong smell of urine (not like a public restroom, but like something that hadn’t been cleaned in a long time), and generally filthy. When I returned to the front desk in the morning to report what had happened, the staff member acted both annoyed and unsurprised. He refunded my stay — in cash — and said, “we don’t normally do this,” like he was doing me a favor. He told me there was nothing he could do about the man harassing me and that I could “go to the police” if I wanted. When I asked if I could charge my portable charger behind the desk (since there were no working outlets available overnight), he cited “insurance liability.” I pointed out that the bigger liability is guests sleeping in stairwells with drunk strangers roaming around. He sighed, tore a scrap of paper, and started writing a handwritten waiver beginning with “I hereby declare…” to protect himself in case my charger got stolen — all of this after I’d just spent the night locked in a bathroom afraid for my safety. Once he realized it was just a charger and not my phone, he let it go. I want to be clear: I’m not saying this will happen to everyone, but even if your bed is available when you check in, this hostel has serious safety issues: 1 No functional emergency number. 2 No overnight security — doors are locked, but anyone can prop them or be let in, and no one is available to remove uninvited guests. 3 No backup options — no sofa, no chair, no safe space for displaced guests. 4 Very poor cleanliness, especially in shared bathrooms. I gave the hostel a chance to make it right. They refunded me €30 in cash and offered me a coffee. That’s not enough for what I experienced. I’ve since reported the situation to Booking.com and am requesting further compensation. I’m not one to leave angry reviews — this is my first ever. But if this review helps someone avoid what I went through, it’s worth sharing. If Booking.com responds, I’ll update this review accordingly.

    BEDBUGS and terrible all over

    rating06 Jun 2025

Rooms had BEDBUGS and we showed the clear signs on arrival, the staff did not care and were rude and just said its dirt and walked away from us? Also lied about having bedbugs earlier and said the rooms had been cleaned but none of the stains were marked (professional bedbug cleaners mark spots with a circle when they have been celaned). Staff did not suggest a change of rooms/ didnt want to come check again and did not provide any concrete information for us the feel safe staying there. Most terriblw ecperience ive everrrr had, we had to figure out a new stay on our own. Also smelled real bad and an actual bedbug was found by other people staying there the next day, we did not get a refund on our stay. Just do not go here please such rude staff and terrible accommodation.

    NOT SAFE!!!

    rating28 Dec 2024

I was travelling through Germany because it’s suppose to be safe but, as a female traveller, I did not feel safe in this Hostel at all. First of all the rooms and the toilets stink, the woman at the reception was so rude, she did not want to help me with recommendations around the city and didn’t even bother with explaining the rules of the hostel. The room I was staying in was so dingy and there was this strange woman sleeping there who I’m assuming had been staying there for a while. Her side of the dorm was very messy, stinky and she would scroll through her phone at odd hours of the night because of which I could barely sleep. In fact she would sleep all day and would stare at me when she was awake. I couldn’t wait to get out there fast enough, I was so scared for my safety that I booked an early morning Uber even though it’s only a 5 mins walk but, I was terrified to walk by myself when it’s still dark. The common area isn’t very accessible so, it’s difficult to meet other travellers. Just save your money and skip it.

    Disgusting

    rating21 Jun 2024

Without doubt the worst place I have ever stayed in my life, would not recommend this accommodation to any person or animal, room was filthy, toilet wasn’t even as clean as that. Came home covered in bug bites. Avoid this place at all costs, simply horrible stay

Ruined by inconsiderate partying teens :(

    rating23 Apr 2024

Sadly I had a terrible experience at the Station Hostel.I booked 3 months in advance for a private room for a 2 night midweek stay during my trip to Germany. The location is absolutely fantastic, just minutes from the main station. Check in was friendly and efficient and I was pleasantly surprised when I got to my room. Super clean, the bed was extremely comfortable, nice big windows allowing plenty of light. Small desk and a lovely compact small toilet and shower.Bedding, towels and toiletries were provided and a modest €1 is charged per extra towel if you need more than one. The common areas on the ground floor are lovely and the bar / restaurant is cosy and very welcoming. This could have been such a pleasant experience. It wasn’t the hotel that ruined it, it was the groups of teens staying in the rooms around me. I had room 409. Rooms 410,411 and 412 had students in them who partied and misbehaved until well after 4am. I got absolutely no sleep for doors slamming, furniture being thrown about, shouting, swearing, screaming, running and fighting in the hall ways, banging on walls….. it was absolutely AWFUL. They behaved like animals with total disrespect for any other guests trying to sleep.Sadly the staff leave at midnight and so there isn’t anyone there to deal with noise complaints and people can simply behave as they wish.I left to go about my day the next day but felt tired and came back to try and have a nap in the afternoon, however the party had started again and I brought it to the attention of the young man on reception. He told me he would talk to them, but it made little difference and the torture continued. I had no option but to check out and try to find somewhere else to stay for the night. Given that there was a convention on in Cologne this week, trying to find anything in the city for less than €170 per night was near impossible, but I couldn’t bear to spend another night there without sleep. The young man on reception was apologetic and kindly refunded one night of my stay as a gesture of good will. It was appreciated and not at all the fault of the hotel, but the total disrespect shown by this group of guests ruined my stay and cost them a future customer. This kind of behaviour should not be tolerated and I’d always imagined there was a mutual level of respect in hostels, especially as people share rooms. Clearly not in this case.If you want to rest at any point during your travels, I’d only advise on this hostel as an absolute last resort. I cannot fault the cleanliness of the room. Nor can I fault the staff, they’re lovely, but the guests staying in the 3 rooms next to me absolutely ruined my trip. A total disappointment.
