  Beautiful building, but not quite 5-star — 4/5

  We stayed 4 nights at Fraser Suites Hamburg as a couple in May 2026. Having previously stayed at virtually every 5-star hotel in Hamburg — The Fontenay, Fairmont Vier Jahreszeiten, The Westin at Elbphilharmonie, Atlantic Hotel Kempinski, Side Design Hotel and others — we feel well placed to compare.The hotel occupies a stunning historic tax authority building, and the rooms are well-appointed with excellent storage, including a separate walk-in wardrobe. Front desk staff were friendly, competent and helpful throughout.That said, a few things fell short. The lobby is smaller and darker than photos suggest, and the breakfast restaurant lacks natural light, tucked away in the building's interior. We skipped the hotel breakfast and instead enjoyed excellent nearby alternatives — Nord Coast Coffee and Marshall Street Coffee are both within easy walking distance and highly recommended.Our main gripe: the bed was on the firm side and the down pillows were heavy and dense — sleep quality suffered as a result.On the plus side, the location is outstanding: perfectly placed between HafenCity and the Neuer Wall shopping district, steps from Rödingsmarkt station.A genuinely lovely hotel in a remarkable building — but compared to Hamburg's true 5-star offerings, it sits comfortably at 4 stars.

  very good location and breakfast

  We had a very good time in the Fraser suites, location is fantastic.   Very enjoyable stay at Fraser Suites Hamburg

  A lovely hotel to stay in! I stayed for two nights in early November with my partner and she also could not say a bad word about the place. Firstly the lobby smells great and is beautiful. I kept finding new things to look at in the building, it has so much character and charm.Check-in staff were friendly enough and spoke English fluently. We were able to store our bags on arrival and departure which was very helpful whilst waiting for check-in or exploring the city on the last day. The hotel took a credit card deposit from me which is pretty standard. When I left, I was charged the correct amount of 'city tax' which from memory was circa 10 euros.The building itself is an amazing art deco giant. It's in a really nice area of Hamburg, surrounded by canals, bars, shops and restaurants. There's several grocery stores nearby. Public transport around Hamburg is great and Fraser Suites has a subway station (Rödingsmarkt) literally outside the front door. From here you can be in the centre of the city in a few minutes, or head the other way to the docks area. There is also another station (Stadthausbrücke) a few mins walk away which has a direct train to the airport that takes 30mins. If you want to walk into the city, it's not far at all to the 'main' area. Maybe a 10-15min walk. So the location is spot on for exploring Hamburg.The rooms are a really good size and the suite we booked was not expensive considering the size of it. The high ceilings and art deco style really make it feel luxurious. A separate bedroom is really good to have rather than just having one room. There was a small kitchen area, a 'dining' area and a 'lounge' area in the main room. I thought it was a great layout and nice to have the option of different areas.The fridge had a few complimentary soft drinks which I wasn't a huge fan of but hey, they're free. The coffee machine was one of the 'pod' type ones and reception were happy to provide replacement pods when we needed them. The kitchen came equipped with all the basics you'd want so you could probably cook something decent in it if you wanted. I personally ate only in restaurants for the short time I was staying.The bathroom was perfect. The shower was super powerful. There's a rain shower head and a 'normal' one but it had a few settings on it which were interesting to use. Provided shower gel/shampoo/conditioner and other toiletries were good quality. The only slight downside was a bit of water leaking out of the shower door but as the heating was excellent it dried out really quickly so wasn't a big deal.I did not try the restaurant or bar so can't comment on those. Looked busy though.Another plus point which would not be obvious is that you can Chromecast to the TVs in the room! That's such a good idea and worked flawlessly for me. I was able to watch my own shows on Netflix/other streaming services by 'casting' to the TV. Otherwise I would have been stuck with a few local German channels and BBC World. The great thing was it worked on both TVs separately meaning you and your companion could easily watch two different things if you wanted. Very simple to do and just requires you to be connected to the hotel wifi. Speaking of WiFi - it was excellent for me. I had absolutely no issues with it during my stay and it had decent speed and latency.Things of note: 1. About 2-3mins walk from the hotel is 'St. Nikolai Memorial'. I recommend you go and have a look at it - it's a very impressive building. It's not even my sort of thing but it's quite amazing that it's just... there, in the middle of a modern city. 2. In Germany almost all shops are closed on Sundays. Plan accordingly. It can be hard to even find a supermarket that's open! Restaurants are open though.3. Exit Stadthausbrücke onto 'Neuer Wall'. It is closer to the hotel, plus you get a lovely view on the way up the escalator.4. All the fancy designer shops are on Neuer Wall. Chanel, Gucci, etc.5. The room numbers are in the light outside the door. Easy to miss if you aren't looking for them. This is part of the art deco style of the building.6. Make sure your door is locked when leaving. It's easy to accidentally leave it unlocked and takes a bit of trial and error to get right!7. Go to the Hamburg Bunker and walk up it for a fantastic 360 degree view of the city. Take the stairs and read about the history of it. Pretty amazing building.The ONLY downside for me specifically was the mattress was very firm. Almost rock solid firm. The first night I struggled to sleep due to this and had a bit of a headache. I managed to make it tolerable by experimenting with the pillows but it was a particularly hard bed so I had a few hours on the sofa instead. My partner was way happier with the firm bed than I was. It was better on the 2nd night as the hotel kindly provided another duvet which softened the bed slightly on my side. Not a deal breaker but something to be aware of if you are sensitive to such things.Anyway, I would highly recommend staying at Fraser Suites if you are in Hamburg. For the price I don't think you will get a bigger room in a better location. Thank you!   We spent 4 nights here, 4 nights we'll remember with great fondness. The staff at the front desk were so welcoming and accommodating, patient and understanding. The rooms were well appointed and even though our window faced the U Bahn, it was whisper silent. The location was perfect for exploring the Ratsmarkt, restaurants and adjacent shopping areas.   Overall okay hotel.The suites was as per expectation. Very useful with the kitchenette. Good wide bed. But nothing fantastic about it for 5 star expectations.Breakfast was not good. Eggs on request, but nothing else warm.Bread and cakes was bakeoff. Rating would be max 4. Probably not staying here again to that cost.
