  Ageing Hotel - No Hot Water & No Apology

  No hot water and no apology What would have been a fantastic stay for my wife's birthday weekend in Germany, we chose this hotel for location and reviews... yes we had the room with a view, overlooking the lake etc. But the nightmare began with having no hot water in the morning... I occasionally like a cold shower on a hot sunny day, but it was not a hot sunny day, and we found the water temperature was a cold as the staff when we checked out... This ruined the start of our weekend break, and set us off poorly for heading into Berlin... but thankfully the next hotel had hot water and a beautiful bathroom and shower!! Sadly, I cannot recommend this hotel, it left us so disappointed. We heard great things about the food, but we did not stop for breakfast, the cold shower ended all that...Not to the expectations promised, shame, a real shame... To see review policies, visit their site.ReviewsG M3/52 hours ago on  GoogleThe grand hotel from the Hamburg golden era,made to impress any guest.Trully beautiful architecture, conveniently located at the lake Alster.We had a superior room with a lake view which was average size, with shower only no bath.Although there is a coffee machine in the room,no teas or kettle provided.Pillows are just terrible no firmness at all,and bed sheets were changed only once on our 4 night stay.Breakfast is priced at 44 euro pp per day,which is just a ridiculous price.We had a couple of bottles of champagne during our stay,at no time the bottle was presented by the server as it should be neither we were given the opportunity to try it before it was poured to us.On many occasions we ended up serving ourselves.Common things like strawberries with champagne were hard to get and we only got it last night because one of the servers went to the kitchen and got it for us,which I thought was a great service,even though the request was put with the management on the first day.There is evident lack of attention to detail as well as lack of training which isn't a staffs fault instead it's a management responsibility,and failure to provide those essentials says about establishment.No SPA facilities were open during our stay,and the general upkeep and presentation of the building from the outside wasn't at the highest standard expected from an establishment like this.New year eve celebration was a joke.Instead of having a jazz band or any sorts of live band to play at the saloon with such a beautiful acoustics they hired the worst DJ I ever heard I my life.I loved the history and ambience of the lobby and the bar but that was it , nothing else impressed me nor I would go back.This is not a true 5* experience.   The good: Mostly very professional staff who answers fast;Possible to check in early;Good breakfast, including a la carte options;Great barkeeper, she really moved the free welcome drink to the next level.The bad:View and size of the room are assigned randomly. So for the same price it can be a big or small room, with street, court or lake view. I asked for lake view at booking, but it turned it, all of that is really a matter of luck. That was later also confirmed by the hotel - my room was also much smaller than advertised;My room didn't have a balcony but the neighbour's balcony went along my window, so no privacy for me;200 Euro deposit at check in;Breakfast room can be very loud, especially when seated in the centre of the room. The person in front of me in me asked for a quiet space. The person in front of my was allowed to sit in a quiet area, to me that was refused.

  The double room was on the cozy side but still perfectly functional—everything essential was provided. Room service was outstanding, and the staff at reception, the bar, and the restaurant were all exceptionally helpful. The location is unbeatable, and breakfast? Absolutely first-rate—couldn’t have asked for better!

  Luxurious Hotel with Great Restaurants and Difficult Accounting Problems

  The hotel is old school luxury in every way. Although we could not check in due to early arrival, our bags were in our room when we returned. The hotel has amazing views of the lake, and everything is beautifully decorated. We dined in the Atlantic Grill which has great upscale German food to please anyone. The bar is also very nice with live piano music and great drinks. The room was large and roomy and overlooked the courtyard.A few problems at the hotel though. The hotel requires a large deposit upon check in and then charges 30% more for the room upon check out and does not take the deposit into consideration as most hotels do (just charge the difference). Took over a week to have the hotel refund the deposit (after much correspondence). Also, the bar service is very rude as we were required to move to another table as pushy other guests wanted our choice seats near the piano. I recommend the hotel due to the luxurious setting and great restaurants. However, please be cautioned that the hotel's Accounting Department and Front Desk over-charges customers and fails to timely refund deposits.
