Good hotel, but unfortunately let down by arrogant customer relations from two members of staff

    rating10 Nov 2025

I was a regular customer in this hotel for 13 years, but unfortunately, I had some very unpleasant experiences during and following my last visit. The good: The hotel is very close to the main train station. It's in a beautiful and nicely renovated historical building, the rooms are nicely furnished and very clean, and most of the staff is very friendly and welcoming. The bad experiences: One member of staff asked me to leave the breakfast room 15 minutes after the buffet had closed, obviously because I was the only guest remaining and I had just finished eating, giving as a reason that she wanted to finish work. (Strangely enough, I have never seen this happening when a whole group stayed longer, sometimes much longer.) Since the same person had done this on a previous visit after which I mentioned it in a review and gave less than the full rating for the first time, I asked her for her name. I explained to her calmly that I don't like getting up immediately after I finish eating and that I don't feel being treated with respect as a customer being asked to leave as if I were in a hostel. She then said that I would then need to arrive earlier. (I had arrived and served myself about 10 minutes before the buffet closed.) I said that she didn't seem to understand what I was trying to tell her and that I would then inform management about this. She then said (translated from German): "Yes, do complain." I stayed another 5 to 7 minutes before I left. During that time she swept the floor demonstratively next to where I was sitting, very obviously trying to show me that I was in her way. Furthermore, this person had never greeted me when I arrived or left, not even after I greeted her, never smiled, and never asked for permission before clearing my table, which all other staff members did. Since I had been very happy with this hotel for so many years and with all other staff members, I decided to write en e-mail to management. I was quite shocked by the reply I received. They mainly wrote that they couldn't find anything wrong with the staff member's behaviour and that I was free to chose another hotel if "their procedures and conditions didn't meet my expectations" (translated from German). After being treated in such a condescending and arrogant way, I cannot stay in this hotel any longer and will now find another hotel for my regular visits in Hamburg.

    Acceptable for short stays

    rating14 Sept 2025

I have a lot to say about this one, but the summary is that this hotel is perfectly fine if you’re only spending a night or two in Hamburg, but if you’re visiting for longer than that, I suggest investing in something a bit more comfortable. This review is based on my experience with the basic room, which I think is fair given most people will not have booked the bigger ones. The good:- Absolutely outstanding location, barely 30 seconds away from the Hauptbahnhof (if you jaywalk), with lots of restaurants nearby- Nice staff- Very very clean, with rooms cleaned daily - Extensive breakfast- Reception manned 24/7- Safe area- Safe for personal items provided with the room (believe it or not, this is not always a given)The bad:- Old, like really old. This shows in many areas such as the noisy floors, the slow elevator, the antiquated key-based system, the barely usable television…- Confusing layout if you’re looking for anything other than your own room- Elevator not going to the top floor (only 2 rooms, so it’s not that big a deal)- Breakfast way too expensive, even though it’s very nice- Extremely small rooms with extremely small beds and extremely small sheets- Extremely narrow bathroom and shower. If you are a very big person, I genuinely do not think this is feasible for you (seriously, I’m really not kidding); I suggest having a look before making any commitments - Soundproofing insufficient for blocking out the sound of honking and speeding cars, as well as sirens (God there are a lot of those in Hamburg)- No cold water in the sink on the sixth floor for some reason- Wifi very shoddy on the sixth floor- No integrated air conditioning, just a floor fan. If you are staying during the hot summer months I think this might a big problem, but most of the year it should be enough All in all, it is a decent hotel that is very stress free where you can spend a night or two easily. However, for longer trips, I believe it’s nice to have a room you actually enjoy spending time in, and this was not it. You’d better bring some entertainment of your own otherwise those long, jet lag hindered nights are going to be really depressing.

    Ok for a night

    rating30 Jul 2025

Conveniently located across the street from the train station; as with most train stations, there are plenty of shady characters in this area. The hotel was quaint, check-in was easy, the staff were friendly.Quite the labyrinth to find the room--up a lift to the first floor, down a hallway and up a step, down another hallway, then down a large stairway and another, and finally into the next lift to get to the correct floor. The room was small but adequate. Unfortunately, no air conditioning on a hot summer night; using the two floor fans and opening the windows helped some but it was still a sweaty night & morning. The bed was comfortable enough and had nightstands on each side as well as power outlets--perfect for two people to charge devices at bedside. The bathroom was well lit and had a shower (only) with weak water pressure. The sink had ample counter space. The towels were decent, and the magnifying mirror was a great touch. The WiFi was strong and password protected (yay!). If I ever again need a hotel for a night at the Hamburg Hbf (main train station) I might consider returning.

    My favourite hotel

    rating05 Jul 2025

I have always loved this hotel with its quirky layout, strange angles and winding corridors that span multiple buildings. Modern hotels are BORING - this hotel has CHARM! And it is located just across the street from the Hauptbahhnhof! My favourite of the hotels on Kirchenallee! This time I had a nice, large room (with a bathtub!) at the back corner of the hotel. The room was facing the streets Bremer Reihe/Steintorweg where people make a lot of noise, shout, throw bottles etc. until late at night without taking into account the guests of the nearby hotels who want to sleep. However, when I closed the window I could hear none of the noise from the street. (It seems that a certain kind of loud and drunk people like to dwell in streets near railway stations at night, not only in Hamburg, and this is not the hotel's fault; I think the advantages of staying in a hotel near the station outweigh the disadvantages. And this hotel has many quiet rooms facing the courtyard!) I have stayed here several times before and I will definitely be back soon!

Muy bien ubicado / good located

    rating26 May 2025

I will write the review in English after the Spanish El hotel está muy bien situado, cerca de la mayoría de las atracciones turísticas. La estación de tren tiene muchas opciones gastronómicas The hotel is very well located, close to most tourist attractions. The beautiful town hall can be visited on foot from the hotel. The room is not extremely large but comfortable, with a spacious bathroom. Theroom has a safe but no frigobar which would be a plus. The only thing I have to warn is that being close to the train station the atmosphere is not the best but it is not impossible either. The train station has many gastronomic options.
