Nice rooms, terrible processes, never again

    rating17 Mar 2026

I wish this hotel was good. The rooms are nice! The setup is nice! But their processes are broken. Here is an email I sent to the hotel management, with the problems I had. For bonus points, I'm including below the unsatisfactory answer I got from them. They really should fix up their processes for this to be a good hotel. My email:I'm just staying in MK hotel in Munich City, and saw a few broken processes, and thought I'd reach out. (The front desk staff were not particularly empowered to care.) I should say the hotel is really nice. But here are the broken things:1. Any person can get a key to my room, if they have my last name and birth date. This is because the key card machine, which sits in the street in front of the hotel, asks only for my name and date of birth, and then it issues a key. Note that this is true even after I'm checked in.So if I want to break into someone's room, I can just look up their date of birth, and then I can just get into their room, while all their stuff is in there. (Anyone who knows my birthday and how old I am, knows my date of birth -- this info is pretty much available online.) This is super dangerous. I recommend the blogpost "The Security Mindset" by Schneier on Security, to systematically avoid this kind of bad situation. But you don't really need a fancy blog post to know this is broken.2. Room cleaning: the hotel signage creates the expectation that rooms will be cleaned only upon request (great! good for the environment.) But in practice, my room was cleaned multiple times, by surprise, even when I had the "do not disturb" sign. (I have put the do not disturb sign because I wanted to make sure my room was not cleaned, since all my stuff was lying around, and I had valuables in the room; the safe was not working). The cleaner even creepily folded up my dirty underwear that were on the floor, and placed them passive-aggressively on the bed. She was probably good, actually, but if my room is going to be entered into, I'd love to actually know. Especially if I put the do not disturb sign on the outside of the door. I felt this was a big violation of privacy, and given the situation with the safe (which was faulty), it also felt like a danger to my possessions. Overall, it would help to be much more clear about whether rooms are going to be entered into.(Note that there is a sign on the desk that said rooms are cleaned typically every two days. However, that sign is double-sided, and when I entered the room, the German side of the sign was pointing in my direction, and I had no idea the other side has English. I wasn't in the mood to auto-translate every sign I see, so I ignored it. Big mistake! I don't think any money or posessions were taken, but my wallet with hundreds of euros was left in the room (since I did not imagine anyone would enter if I left the "do not disturb sign", and money or valuables *could* have been taken. It feels very unsafe.)3. Pet peeves: (i) communication from the hotel was mostly in German. I don't know why. I booked through booking.com, and comms with them was of course in English, but as soon as I started getting emails from the hotel, it was all in German. (ii) the safe wasn't working. In fact, I think a previous guest left it locked. But also the instructions on it were quite cryptic, so I don't know, maybe I didn't operate it correctly. I didn't bother asking for help because I was always in a hurry, and the staff are not super-helpful, and I expected no one to actually enter my room, because the elevator sign said that rooms would be cleaned by request, and because I left the do not disturb sign on.I think that's it. Overall, the hotel itself was actually really nice. But the whole experience that I describe above felt canny and unsafe. You seem like you take hospitality very seriously, so I thought I'd drop you a line.======Their response:thank you very much for your detailed message and for taking the time to share your honest feedback regarding your stay at mk | hotel münchen city. We are sorry to hear that several aspects of your experience made you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, as this does not meet our standards.Regarding your points in detail:Concerning the check-in terminal, we would like to note that it operates with several security measures. Alternatively, all guests have the option to check in online prior to arrival. In this case, you receive a digital room key via email or WhatsApp, which cannot be lost and offers additional convenience. Furthermore, our reception is staffed daily until 10:00 PM. According to our system, you checked in at 9:20 PM, so a personal check-in would have been possible as well. At the terminal itself, there is also the option to complete check-in using a QR code.Regarding room cleaning, we understand that this may have caused confusion. The cleaning status is not recorded through an automated digital system, but rather documented manually by our team, allowing us to clearly track when a room has been accessed. According to our records, there was no “Do Not Disturb” sign placed on your door on 26.02. As our rooms are generally cleaned every two days, our housekeeping team carried out the service accordingly. That said, we have a strict policy that personal belongings of guests must never be touched by housekeeping staff. We therefore take your comment regarding your underwear very seriously, as this does not meet our standards.Regarding your valuables, we would like to point out that all rooms are equipped with a safe. We strongly recommend storing valuables there. If a safe is not functioning properly, our team is always available to assist. With regard to communication: our team at mk | hotel münchen city speaks both German and English. As we operate in Germany, signage is primarily in German, often with English provided on the reverse side. In addition, the language of our automated communication is based on the information stored in the booking system. In your case, a German phone number and German as the preferred language were registered, which is why communication was sent in German.Thank you again for your valuable feedback. It helps us continuously improve our processes. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again in the future and provide you with a fully satisfactory experience.

Great stay with an excellent on-site brewery

    rating15 Dec 2025

I had a very pleasant stay at mk | hotel München City. The hotel is well located, clean, and comfortable, making it a great base for exploring Munich. The rooms were modern, quiet, and well maintained, and the overall atmosphere felt welcoming and efficient.A highlight of my stay was definitely the on-site brewery and restaurant. The beer was excellent, and the food was fresh, flavorful, and well prepared. It was so convenient to be able to enjoy a great meal and quality local beer without having to leave the hotel after a long day of sightseeing.Overall, I was very happy with my experience and would gladly stay here again. A solid choice in Munich, especially if you appreciate good beer and a relaxed dining experience right at your hotel.

    Convenient, but....

    rating01 Oct 2025

Good news first. Location is great! Walking distance from central train station, Marienplatz, Oktoberfest, and Lufthansa express bus to airport. Decent breakfast buffet. Had dinner in the restaurant one evening and it was very good with excellent service! Check in was easy as was checking out.The bad news. Extremely loud noise from street below all night! Needed window open for ventilation so sleeping was practically nonexistent. There was a fan in the room, and I also have a sleep fan app, but they didn't really help that much. Also, the street itself was sketchy, to say the least. Had to walk past a strip club to get to the hotel. Would not want to walk there late at night. I would not recommend.

Mixed feelings: probably would not return.

    rating05 Sept 2025

Postitives: The hotel was clean and the rooms were comfortable and all the staff were very friendly, helpful and welcoming. The restaurant offered a good choice of meals and drinks at a reasonable price.Negatives: The hotel was situated in what appeared to be something of a "red-light" area with "exotic" dancing clubs just a little further up the road; scantily-clad ladies could be seen enticing customers in the doorways, albeit at night, but I wouldn't consider it a suitable location for families.More specifically to the MK Hotel, I felt that the breakfast offered a rather limited choice and somewhat lacked in variety. No fresh fruit juices were available, only bottled juices and waiting/clearing staff were virtually non-existant at breakfast times. No reception staff are on duty later at night; there is an electronic check-in system which I was not made aware of prior to arrival and, arriving late due to a delayed train, I was left bewildered at the door not knowing how to get in. It was left to two guests who happened to be returning to the hotel to show me what I needed to do, which I thought was very poor.

    Would not return

    rating22 May 2025

This hotel offered good value for a city centre hotel. It is near the central station and within walking distance of the city centre. The area around the hotel has a busy but somewhat sleazy atmosphere. There are plenty of places to eat and to buy bits and pieces nearby and a very nice coffee shop also. The hotel itself is run by what seems to be a skeleton staff. Check in was at the bar. The room was fine but very warm. The sink was in the room, the shower had a glass door and panel. There was a floor fan which cooled things down and helped dull the noise from the street. RoomCleaning is every other day and rather hot and miss. There is a kettle and a paper cup. This was never changed and I had to ask reception for fresh ones! The corridor outside the room did not appear to see a vacuum cleaner very often. The staff were fine and whilst the hotel was fine for the sort of visit I was making it is not somewhere to which I’ll return.
