    Not a great experience.

    rating20 May 2026

If you like a shoddy, badly designed hotel with the benefit of extremely poor plumbing and aggressive customer service, then you will enjoy the Utopia. Its location cannot be faulted, once you find it beneath a shop called Athlete’s Foot, honest, but it is close to popular tourist attractions such as the Acropolis and Syntagma Square. Despite that, we endured a torturous two night stay. We were given a dark room - the hotel is painted throughout in battleship grey - but were soon reeling from the most dreadful smell coming from the en-suite. This we discovered came from an exterior stench pipe, on the small Astro-turfed balcony, and to our joy we could also hear every single plop from residents in the hotel as they went to the toilet. We politely complained and were promised another room after we returned from exploring Athens. This did not materialise, but the smell had had a chance to mature in our absence, and was overpowering. We had to ask the receptionist to smell for herself as the complaint was not taken seriously. After much discussion we were finally offered an upgrade. Hardly. The website suggests it was still a classic double room which we were originally offered at a price of almost 200 pounds per night. Currently these are on offer for the end of May/early June for 164 sterling. The beds are huge - but its style over substance, the headboards are so large they hide the all-important light switches and charging points. The bedsheets are too small, and there were no blankets provided for the chilly room. Plus, the beds are on a platform so there is a trip hazard when using the (sweet-smelling) loo in the night. The tv almost decapitated my partner as it is hung off the wall at an angle, and then there is the unavoidable steel joists which are obligingly placed over the second window. Free sangria vouchers does not compensate for an uncomfortable nights sleep and disruptions from changing rooms. Room 307 was a disgrace, and in its current state should not be let. We were catching a mid-morning flight so turned up at the 8am opening time for the rooftop restaurant, which is run by a third party. The staff wandered in at 8-15 to clean the glasses from the night before, there was nothing ready despite there being several other customers waiting to be served. We had to leave but before doing so my partner expressed his disappointment in the lack of food, and was told the breakfast was complimentary, so they were doing us a favour after all. This is very deceiving and previous reviews show the confusion as they too understood it was inclusive. it is difficult to justify the price charged on the basis of a room only, even if the location is central. In short, we had an uncomfortable stay at this establishment, and cannot recommend it to other tourists, unless you have lost your sense of smell. We found the hotel using Chat GPT, - I have learnt a lesson there and can assure you that I am not a robot, but if I were it might have made the stay more bearable.

    Mixed experience

    rating09 Apr 2026

The location is excellent, if you wish to be central in Athens. You step right out onto a very busy pedestrianised shopping street. There is no communal area for guests - you are either in your room or in the bar/restaurant. Because of the location, there is constant street noise from early morning ( deliveries and street cleaning etc) until all hours of the night. For this reason, I couldn't sleep on my first night - was located on the 3rd floor facing onto the street. The lovely Yorgos managed to find me a change of room to an upper floor at the back, and a bigger room. (The other reception staff were not so helpful nor friendly, giving me wrong information a couple of times). The other issue for me was the breakfast. Aside from the wonderful view, the service was atrocious - perfunctory and at times sullen. On my first morning, the waitress was 22 mins late and didn't apologise for the late start. The other two servers were no better, making one felt that one was a nuisance to them. The coffee was barely drinkable, and one only was allowed to have one cup with the breakfast voucher. The egg dishes were fine. Otherwise, the bedrooms were fine, with comfortable beds, and the whole hotel was spotless. Great experience overall. The hotel is in a perfect location and the rooms were spotless. Demetris at the reception was especially polite and helpful, always ready to assist with a smile. Great location, but definitely NOT a 4-star experience

    rating07 Mar 2026

Pros:The positive aspects were the room and the location. The room was comfortable, clean, and well-equipped. The hotel is situated right in the city center. Cons:Hotel does not meet 4-star standards at all. The service was a major disappointment:• The "Breakfast" Scam: We paid extra for breakfast. It’s not a buffet; you have to choose from a very limited menu (6/7 items). To make matters worse, only plain black coffee is included, everything else is an extra charge. This is unacceptable for a 4 stars. (the breakfast you get from the hotel is served on the rooftop). • Rude Staff & Poor Timing: The rooftop staff was rude and unwelcoming. Breakfast is supposed to start at 8:00 AM, but when we arrived at 8:10 AM, the waiter wasn't even there. While we were finally eating, they started mopping the floors around us, completely unprofessional.• No Luggage Storage (outside your booking time): If you plan on leaving your bags for a few hours at the hotel storage, be aware that they do not allow you.Summary: Good for the location, but the management and service are nowhere near the level you’d expect for a 4 stars. Perfect Location & Exceptional Hospitality

Great location right in the heart of the city – everything is within walking distance. The service was exceptionally kind and welcoming from the first moment. The staff were always polite, helpful, and genuinely friendly, making us feel comfortable throughout our stay. The atmosphere was pleasant, the room was clean and well maintained, and the overall experience was very positive. We truly appreciated the hospitality and would be happy to stay here again.
