Very small single room with no en suite , just a toilet in a corner next to a small shower .It was very cheap but I was expecting a nicer room no one like a 60s chalet at a Butlins camp ! The beach was lovely though and the food was ok

    Receptionist at Stalis - Unacceptable

    rating03 Apr 2025

Unacceptable Behavior – Unsafe and Disrespectful TreatmentOur experience at Stalis Hotel was absolutely unacceptable and deeply disturbing. We arrived late at night, exhausted and expecting a room that had been arranged for us by the ADAF festival — only to be told by the receptionist (a man on duty on the night of Thursday to friday 04 April, that no room was available. Instead of offering help or a solution, he was rude, aggressive, sarcastic, and completely unprofessional. I realised there is something wrong with him when I entered the hotel and he did not even get up from the couch he was chilling to go behind the reception desk to check my booking. He laughed at us, told us to “just sleep on the couches until the morning”, and made it very clear we were not welcome. He kept repeating that the “whole hotel was booked by ADAF” in a mocking tone, without offering any assistance or empathy. We were four artists, arriving late with suitcases, and instead of basic hospitality or even decency, we were met with hostility and mockery. Eventually, we had to walk through one of the most dangerous streets in Athens, dragging our luggage in the dark, where we were followed by drug addicts and had to literally run through alleyways to find safety. The hotel offered us no help — no alternative, no care for our safety, nothing. This was one of the worst experiences I’ve had while traveling professionally. I do not recommend Stalis Hotel to anyone — especially not to women, artists, or travelers arriving at night. The lack of professionalism, safety, and basic human respect is beyond appalling.

Rough area but not the Hotel's fault

    rating02 Aug 2024

The Hotel itself is clean and the staff themselves are lovely, friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the area IS known as the worst neighborhood in Athens (every city has one). There are drug users who hang about but they don't bother you and in a few minutes walk you are out of the area and into nicer areas of Athens (to be honest, you still see the beggars and homeless in centre of Athens anyway). There is graffiti but... I've noticed that's the same in most European cities (I spent a week in Rome 4 months ago). You are less than 5 minutes from 2 different metro stations and a 5 day metro ticket is only 8 euros. 20 minute walk from Monstiraki Square or Syntagma Square. I am on day 5 of a 7 day stay (currently still here). Because of the area my first impression of Athens was not great however, I have now spent 5 days exploring and going on guided tours and to the sights of Athens so my impression has changed. Hotels in the other areas are a LOT more expensive so.... this one is cheap because of the above. If you are a bit of a snowflake, don't come. If you are looking for somewhere affordable and just use the hotel as somewhere to sleep at night and get up and head off to see the sights etc during the day it is fine. As say convenient location for metro and also for the open top tour bus stop.

Basic hotel located in a ghetto full of drug addicts

    rating18 Oct 2023

Booked a week in Athens via a well known and respected UK your operator, with accommodation at the Stalis hotel. I am not going to mention the tour operator by name at present as I have raised concerns with them about the hotel and am still waiting for a response. Had a shared transfer booked from the airport and made our way into Athens with an older couple. Taxi entered a side street once in Athens and there was a group of around 12-15 apparently homeless men huddled together sharing drugs paraphernalia. The other couple looked a bit shocked and my wife laughed and said it would be just our luck if this is where our hotel was. Next thing we know the taxi has pulled up and the driver shouts ‘Stalis hotel!’I actually thought he was hooking so laughed, but he got out and retrieved our bags from the rear of the taxi. I was a bit shocked, couldn’t see the hotel but could see a further three women sat on the kerb in front of the taxi, all seemingly off their faces. I had to say to the taxi driver ‘sorry, where’s the hotel?’ And he pointed across the road. Eventually I noticed the entrance which was set back from the roadside behind some pillars. The street looked like a bit of a dive aside from the drug addicts but we entered and checked in. There was a guy sat on a sofa opposite reception surrounded by polythene bags which looked like they contained his belongings. Our room was on the 4th floor so up we went. Room had a double bed but not much else. Little space to walk around the bed, very little storage space, no tea or coffee making facilities, a fridge that is only powered on when the key is placed in the holder on the wall (so not much use for keeping water or drinks cool whileyou’re out and about let alone any food). Curtains were covered in marks, the window overlooked an enclosed space that went from floor to roof and contained air conditioning units and the shower in the bathroom was full of mould. Aside from that the room smelled - of what I have no idea but it was there. Tears followed as my wife was understandably upset and quite frankly, a bit scared. She didn’t want to stay and I knew we wouldHave to find something else but as it was already well into the afternoon I figured we would probably have to stay the night. Quick online search for potential alternative accommodation and we decided to go out and check them out as the last thing we wanted to do was choose somewhere that looked ok online and turned out to be in a ghetto (like the Stalis). So out we go and immediately on leaving the hotel there are eyes on you. You may think I’m being dramatic but having served 30 years as a cop I know what a bad area looks and feels like and this did not give off a holiday or even safe to be here vibe. Incidentally my wife is a criminal justice social worker so we both recognised things for what they are rather than what we might be told they are. Not knowing the area we made for a main road. Getting there was event free but there were drug addicts, homeless people and drugs paraphernalia, rubbish and human excrement all over the place and I was constantly keeping an eye on my surroundings. Sad to say it just didn’t feel safe and as a tourist you stand out like a sore thumb. So we wander to find other accommodations we had pinpointed. Along the way we saw people apparently having psychotic episodes and a woman as skinny as a rake sat in the road in a side street injecting directly into her foot. Needless to say the accommodation we were considering didn’t bear any resemblance to its online persona so we moved on. As we got past the Omonoia Square and moved away from the district in which our hotel was located there was a very distinctly different feel. Much cleaner and less ominous feeling, although I have to say there was still no lack of homeless people however the volume of tourists seemed made this feel a much safer area. Having found an area near to the Acropolis we felt happier to stay in we headed back to the Stalis hotel before dark set in. We walked although my wife would have preferred a taxi but in fairness to the hotel I wanted to see if we had simply over reacted through the shock of what we saw when we were dropped off. In all honesty I just did not feel safe or relaxed walking back. One hand on my backpack at all times and one eye on anyone passing by or that we passed by to make sure my wife would be safe. Streets were filthy, lots of addicts hanging around and human excrement against walls and lampposts. We were not approached, but it did not feel safe and it wasn’t possible to drop my guard. All I could think was what sort of area is this to potentially have a couple of female friends or a lone female traveller placed in a hotel. Don’t mean to sound sexist. Well aware women are capable of looking after themselves. This simply is not an area where a visitor feels particularly safe. So overnight in hotel. Lots of shouting from stairwell during night. Slamming doors and at one point an argument and what sounded like a door being kicked in or at least someone trying to. Then more shouting before I fell asleep. Alternative accommodation booked, we set out in the morning first thing as we couldn’t check in until 3pm. So we wandered all day around the central area around the Acropolis. As we left the Stalis the receptionist asked if we were checking out. I thought that a bit strange as we weren’t carrying bags or cases and hadn’t yet said anything. She then asked if the room was ok and whether we wanted a better room. So I presume someone had already checked out that morning after a very brief stay. Out into the street and there are three homeless men to our right. Two seated, one standing and with blood across his face. He walked toward the hotel and I. To reception as we left. Directly opposite the entrance three women were sat on the kerb surrounded by belongings and whatever they were taking, two were out of their trolleys and the other having a good look at us. We wandered until 3pm, checked into our new accommodation and I left my wife there and walked back to the Stalis to get our bags (hoping they were still there) and came down to reception to check out. The receptionist tutted and sighed and asked what the problem was. I told him my wife didn’t feel safe and quite frankly I didn’t feel particularly safe, and we didn’t want to stay in an area full of rubbish and drug addicts so we were moving to another hotel. More sighing followed and he said, they are harmless. No one will approach you. So I had to explain that wasn’t really the point and I was checking out. He then wandered past me and sat on one of the sofas opposite reception where he sighed some more so I figured I’d be as well waiting for my taxi just inside the front door. I put my bags down to wait and a woman stood behind a car opposite the entrance foyer placed a coffee cup with a domed plastic lid and straw (more on that in a sec) on the roof of a car and it quickly became apparent she was prostituting herself and offering her services. I tried to avoid looking directly at her but she kept on until the taxi pulled up. As soon as the taxi pulled up she picked up her cup and walked down the street. There’s not much more to say about the hotel. Reception was clean but the room was not what was portrayed online, the street and surrounding area is not safe or clean. Over the course of our time in Athens I learned from a number of locals that no one ventures into the area the Stalis is located. Not even the police! It is apparently a ghetto full of drug addicts, brothels and prostitutes and locals said they didn’t feel safe there either and are embarrassed by it. Poverty is a fact of life and Green suffered terribly after the Olympics and financial crash. They are still recovering but it’s going to be a slow and painful journey. I don’t know what the drug of choice is but locally it’s referred to as sheesh, and we saw umpteen people sniffing fumes from plastic domed coffee cups (not to mention the obvious syringe use). There were homeless people all over the place during our stay but they aren’t all drug addicts. A lot seemed to be refugee who have made it as far as Athens and are doing what they can to get by. It’s not pleasant to see, but imagine what it’s like for them. As for the Stalis hotel however, my advice would be just don’t. Especially if you are a line female traveller or female couple/group. Chances are you will not experience any trouble but you will be on edge and will be unlikely to fee safe staying there.

Very nice Staff, clean rooms, great location for evening walk to center. Generally nice stay. Some comments mentioned that area is not plesent, well from what we saw there are many similar areas in Athens. We don't have any bad experience even walking at night.
