Avoid the budget rooms - they are a basement - smell of damp & furniture is old & dated. Reception rude & in a world of their own

Dreadful hotel, dreadful staff. Asked to keep room on as we had a late flight. Was told you can keep it until 8pm for €40. On our last night were told we had to leave our room by 11am and move to another room until 8pm. After moving out 11am we were told the new room wasn't yet ready and we would need to vacate by 5pm not 8pm.

    Bed comfy but....

Owner unpleasant for some reason? Complained even though I bought a beer from the restaurant about having a small coffee I made in self catering apartment. Everyone (regardless of ability) is expected to lift sunbeds on and off. Was 'told off' for being on sunbed at half 5 (didn't realise it had ended yet). Just rude behaviour

Badly maintained apartments, don't waste your money.

Where to begin.....So I read the reviews before booking, some good some not so good that's fine. All I can say is that if they put as much effort into the apartments as they do their restaurant then it would be a great place to stay maybe! Rooms are small dated and not particularly looked after, curtains hanging off the rail, light bulbs not working etc. We tried to use the oven but every time we tried it just tripped all the electrics, Fridge door wouldn't shut properly as fridge was full of ice and freezer box was also full of ice so wouldn't keep food cold Also the shelves on the fridge door were all broken, as for the shower 3 days in and hadn't even had a warm shower let alone a hot one ! I messaged them on their fb page in messenger No reply left it a good few hours the message had been read but not answered so I messaged again stating that one of the reasons for booking was the oven as have an autistic child who can be fussy with food and also doesn't like cold showers and also asked when was the last time the pools pH levels had been checked as you never saw anyone clean the pool or check these , still no reply. As I was on the balcony later that day I saw Macrina (One of the owners) down by the pool so I asked her why she cannot answer my messages her reply was Its Sunday I cant get an electrician on a Sunday, so I again asked her why she cannot answer the messages when she had clearly read them, no real response. Fast forward Monday the cleaner Nadia came to the door to look at the oven.....No she is not an electrician, amazingly it worked but only at that time, it was also down to her to get rid of all the ice at the back of the fridge and in the ice box. As for the hot water amazingly that day everyone had Hot water and the pool man came out that morning to check the levels although the pool wasn't cleaned still green scum around the edge. The reception woman with the limp I think she is Macrina's Mother in law well what a rude women, didn't like me from the off for what ever reason, when we left at 7.30 on the morning of our departure there was no one there to take the key or wish us a farewell nothing, so key got left on the desk and I took a photo to prove I left it there. Going back to the cleaner Nadia, well there are 19 apartments all down to the one cleaner to clean, she also has to sweep and hose around the pool area, clean the floor of the restaurant and anything else the rude woman wants her to do, and God forbid she should take a little longer than she should on something as she would be calling her on the phone to have a go at her. Poor woman works from 8am to around 8pm. Sunbeds are never cleaned down either. Sheets were changed regularly as were the towels so that's a plus! Had to ask for a kettle (that was hard work), there is no toaster couldn't use the oven cause it didn't work so had to use the sandwich toaster to make the toast. only 2 forks for 3 people. Downstairs there were Cockroaches, they did get the fumigators out to try and sort it but thought no one noticed!!!!! Used the restaurant once that was the night we arrived, after the no reply to my messages and then sending the cleaner up to sort the problems we decided that we would not be using the restaurant and spending our money there as they had, had enough of our money already. Would not recommend staying here some apartments do not even have a window in their bedroom or bathroom and as for the beds No not comfortable not unless you like a mattress that sinks when you try to get out the bed!. I know they say you get what you pay for but I have stayed in and paid less for much better. Such a pity as Koutouloufari is a lovely place as is Crete.

    Relaxing Holiday in Beautiful Koutouloufari

    rating22 Jul 2025

Relaxing Holiday in Beautiful KoutouloufariWe’ve just returned from a lovely, relaxing holiday and can’t recommend Koutouloufari enough it’s a gorgeous, peaceful area that felt incredibly safe throughout our stay. The apartments we stayed in were perfectly located, right in the centre of the village with so many lovely places to explore just a short walk away. We dined at the onsite restaurant several times and the food was always delicious, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere from the staff. We had booked a pool view room, paying a little extra, and it was well worth it. We enjoyed sitting out in the evenings watching the world go by. The pizza chefs were a joy to watch always full of energy and entertainment and it was impressive to see how hard they work, preparing food from early in the morning. Our room was clean and well-maintained, with fresh towels and bedding provided. While the décor was a bit dated, it was typical of Greek apartments and perfectly sufficient for our needs. For what we paid – just £875 in July for three of us including flights from Liverpool, luggage, and transfers it was a fantastic deal!As always, it’s about expectations: if you're paying Lambrini prices, don’t expect Champagne service. That said, we found the staff incredibly friendly, especially because we took the time to chat with them and were respectful particularly to the lovely “Grandma,” who worked incredibly hard, often covering long hours to keep things running smoothly while also helping with childcare for the staff’s children in the evenings. It was heartwarming to see how the Greek families support each other.Unfortunately, not all guests were as considerate – some seemed to lack respect for the staff, moving furniture, climbing out of windows, and generally being unhappy, which was a shame. There is a rule about not eating or drinking your own food and drinks around the pool, but to us, that’s just common courtesy especially when there’s a bar and restaurant available. If you want to have your own snacks, your room is right there. One unique rule was putting your sunbed away after use something we’d not encountered before. It could be a little tricky at times, but we understood why Grandma and the cleaner aren’t young and do the set-up each morning. The pool area was mopped and cleaned daily, but it’s inevitable that it gets dusty due to outdoor footwear. We used the pool every day and found it clean our daughter even decided to “rescue” a bug from the bottom just to see if it was alive, not because it was dirty! We arrived at around 3am to find our key and a welcoming note waiting for us. Grandma had stayed up until 2am just in case we arrived earlier, yet another example of how hard she works and how much care goes into making sure guests are looked after. We had a really late evening flight and the apartments where fully booked so couldn't have a room for the day but Grandma managed to let us stay till 3pm and said she'd been worried all night about us being out in the heat all day as it was too long and we could use the facilities all day , very kind of her to sort and we appreciated it greatly Overall, we had a brilliant week peaceful, friendly, and full of charm. If you respect the people and the place, you’ll get a warm experience in return.
