Avoid the Junior Suite with views of the "scenic back alleys of Chania"

    rating11 Dec 2025

Sadly the Scala de Faro in Chania was far from the 5* luxury we had been led to believe it would be from their website. The hotel is situated in the old Venetian Port of Chania, right on the waterfront. The location is perfect and the building itself is beautiful. The reception is on the ground floor and bedrooms are on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. The elevator is accessible from the 1st floor so luggage has to be carried up a flight of stairs to reach the elevator. There are no porters at this hotel. Also, the Port is in a pedestrian area so luggage has to be taken by hand to the hotel from the drop off point or car park. My guess would be 300m or so along cobbled streets. There is no buggy service available as far as we are aware. The hotel describes itself as: consisting of 9 unique rooms and suites, across three floors, on the north and south face, overlooking either the sea or the scenic back alleys of the Old Town and the mountains. We were staying in the Junior Suite with bath which is described as follows, according to their website: "The suite overlooks the Old Town of Chania and features a comfortable bedroom and luxury bathroom with vanity mirror, ideal for the ladies. The hydromassage, the bathroom’s special tile work and the ample room will make you relax and feel right away at home. "I am attaching photos of the “scenic back alleys of the Old Town” which for us featured a derelict building housing discarded timber and pipework, air conditioning units and an extractor fan. See pics. The room features absolutely no drawer space to store clothes and we were forced to live out of our suitcases for the 4 nights we stayed here. Thankfully we had the 3rd bed to use as a base for our cases otherwise stuff would have been all over the floor area. There is a hanging rail with about 6 or 7 hangers. The safe is contained in a cupboard on the floor. To use it requires getting down on hands and knees. Thankfully, though advancing in years, we are still able to do this! There are shutters outside the two windows and net curtains inside. At night, the roller bed had to be moved in order to access one of the windows to close the shutters. On to the bathroom which contains a bath with shower over. There is no shower screen so after showering the entire room is absolutely soaking wet. First one in had to use the bathmat and towel to dry the floor before the other person could take a shower! Fortunately the receptionist was on hand and happy to supply us with clean towels as required.A fridge is also in the room with daily complimentary water. There are other drinks available, but no price list. A coffee machine is provided with complimentary tea & coffee.Breakfast is served between 8.30 and 11.00am. It was ok, though they do serve the most delicious freshly squeezed orange juice. Get there early if you want bread rolls! We made a complaint via our travel consultant, but unsurprisingly the hotel failed to respond…

Surprising historic boutique hotel in the heart of Chania

    rating22 Oct 2025

Scala de Faro is a small, historic boutique hotel in Chania, Crete. Because it is fairly small and is in a very old building, you will have to walk a flight of stairs to get to the rooms and the small elevator (although there is accommodation for the handicapped). Be aware that it is located in the middle of the main walkway along the port (although the entrance is on the street behind the port) and can be a little difficult to find. However, once you locate it and go upstairs, the rooms are completely modern and beautiful. The delightful breakfasts are served on the second floor and the staff are all helpful and charming. There is a door and stairs that go down to the port side. Old Town Chania does not permit cars for most of the day. You may have to walk with your bags to get to the hotel. Despite these various inconveniences, Scala de Faro is one of the nicest boutique hotels I've ever stayed in. The location is fabulous, as you can walk to most of the places you will want to visit in Chania. The views could not be better. I highly recommend it.

    Beautiful, luxury boutique hotel

    rating13 Oct 2025

This hotel was fabulous! It was one of our best stays during our 2 weeks in Greece. The hotel room we stayed in was HUGE and overlooked the sea/lighthouse, it's in a great location on the harbor and is walking distance from everything! Anita, George and Cristina were SO accommodating, friendly, helpful and just superb hosts. It may prove difficult to get to because of it's location on a narrow, cobblestone street, but it is well worth the walk! Elevator starts on the first floor as some mentioned, but it had no bearing on us, we just dragged our luggage up one short flight of stairs - it wasn't an issue at all. I would highly recommend this hotel - it was truly a highlight of our trip!

    Disappointing Hotel

    rating28 Sept 2025

The Scala de Faro is located next to the water with bustling activity beneath the rooms. With that being said, there is no way to be dropped off at the door. We had to drag our bags a quarter of a mile through the pedestrian streets to get to the hotel. There was an elevator however it started on the first floor and check in was on the ground floor. We had to carry our bags up the narrow steps to get to the elevator on the first floor in order to reach our floor. The elevator was too small for luggage and people. In the room there were no washcloths. When we asked at check-in they didn’t know what a washcloth was. There was very little light in the bathroom and no food or drink available in the hotel except for a small breakfast. There were steps out the back of the hotel that allowed us to go to restaurants on the waterfront.

Super staff and comfortable in all ways.

    rating24 Oct 2024

The location and the people in the hotel made for a perfect, relaxed time in the relaxing city of Chania. Our room was lovely, the breakfasts were perfect, and the desk staff (Christina, Anita) were very helpful in all ways, as were the rest of the staff. We would highly recommend this choice for your visit to Crete.
