  So, as I've been planning my long awaited trip to Greece; to initially be had as a "research" trip (looking to become a dual resident of Crete and here in New Orleans within the next couple of years) and a 50th birthday celebration trip, I came across Villa Contessa after searching for days for the "perfect" place.In appearance, location, and "atmosphere" it was everything I am wanting for this leg of my trip.The fabulous reviews made it a no brainer.However, when I had reached out to them multiple times to get clarification of the units-correct info./corresponding pictures/balcony views/room location (as the COUNTLESS sites-including their own- I had investigated didn't have said specific pictures/info. of the specific rooms. They all have multiple repeats of the same pics/info for every room they feature?? Sure this can happen (I suppose..????) but then make even the slightest effort to clarify and provide such easily obtained information. I was not rude about it. Rather I expressed my excitement and pleasure in finding such a perfect place, but I really wanted to make sure I was going to get the room I wanted, keeping in mind that this reservation is for the 3rd week of MAY 2021 and multiple sites have complete open availability!!Also, not forgetting to mention that it would have been from 5-7days, possibility of people joining me (more gees paid to them), and as I informed them, was going to be looking to rent a car/scooter, go horseback riding, and paragliding, in which they advertise to facilitate...and obviously with a charge.So, I guess I'm saying that, although not a king's ransom, they would definitely be receiving a good amount of business from me.I had first booked a few days with then and sent them a note with my questions/concerns, received a reply a couple days later to confirm my booking and push their "shuttle with a fee".I responded informing them that I would not need a shuttle (coming from Chania), but please address said questions/concerns. Another response a few days later, still pushing the shuttle from Heraklion and no other mention.I yet again responded with all previous questions/concerns, also telling them I was going to/wanted to add on a few more days and possibly people, so Please address my room inquiries. Days later, no more replies.I contacted them 2 more times. Ine through the booking site and on directly to the Villa's email.Days later no response. Meanwhile, I (somehow) was able to discern the type of room that was in the "front" and reputed to be the best. It was a larger "apaertment" room. With still no response (but still really wanting to stay there), I cancelled the studio room I had booked and rebooked with the larger apartment unit.. along with a brief reiteration of who I was and what I was inquiring about. Days later, no response other than a confirmation of booking.All the while, my faith in ending up with the room AND hassle free guest experience I was wanting/hoping/planning for had diminished. I decided to restart my search for the "perfect" place elsewhere and went to cancel my..."FULLY refundable" (until April of 2021) reservation. Low and behold, they attempted to charge me HALF my reservation for the "cancellation fee"!!Good thing I screenshot the confirmation before and after I paid the money at booking.Had to call the booking site and they had to "pull rank" over the property and an Operations manager at the booking site ended up refunding ALL of my money.In the end, I am just really disappointed and have a different outlook of all the reviews they've received.It seems they are wonderful,"full service" people as long as it doesn't take too much effort or affects the "bottom line".Again, I really would like to say that I am not a demanding person. Actually, I've been in the Hospitality/Service industry for nearly 30 years so... I know what it's like, how to be grateful and appreciative of "Hospitality Folk", not too mention of ALL people in general.I just really dont think it's too much to ask to want a stress free, "as I desire" first ever trip/once in a lifetime 50th Birthday celebration trip to Greece..I suppose if one isn't so concerned about certain particulars than it wouldn't be an issue and of little consequence, and would enjoy in any event.I am truly so bummed that the little bit of info I was requesting couldn't be acknowledged and therefore the sun has set (or WON'T be, I should say) on my beautiful Villa to stay at :(

  Great and afforable

  We spent a week at Villa Contessa. The apartments are clean and well maintained. George, the owner is very hospitable and helps you with anything. The beach is about 15 minutes by foot. The apartments are regularly cleaned during your stay. All apartments have a balcony. U fortunately no airconditioning, but when you close the doors to the balcony in the morning and open them at night it's no problem. Everything is in the small kitchen if you want to cook in the apartment. One electric plate to cook on. We recommend this place and especially George.

  Small, family business offering 10 rooms accomodation with great location in the middle of Malia old town.the staff was friendly and even woke up in the morning at 6am to make sure our ride finds the place to pick us up. Didn't expect cleaning service since it was a self catering apartment, but was pleasantly surprised by this service. On the downside the beds are not extra comfy and the rooms could use some AC during some nights. Overall great value for money therefore 5 stars from my side

  Situated in Malia Old Town. Villa Contessa is family run, excellently maintained, both inside and out.George and Nikos are very welcoming and friendly.A great place to stay for a peaceful, tranquil holiday.

  there is no bar or pool. perfect for a quiet stay

  All the rooms are very neat and tidy and easily accessable, it is self catering with a kettle and a toaster in the rooms, and washing up liquid. the owners George and nickoare always on hand to help.
