Two weeks at Avra Sept 2025.

    rating30 Sept 2025

My wife and I stayed at Avra for two weeks in Sept 2025. From reading other reviews giving it a zero I have to question what planet some people are on. It is a 2.5/3 star hotel and restaurant. The bedrooms are basic but comfortable and the bed was one of the best I’ve slept on in accommodation anywhere. Aircon was free and most welcome. The walls are typically thin so expect a certain amount of noise in all directions but as the demographic of guests were slightly older, 50s upwards, there is more respect for others than a lot of places. The place is one of the cleanest I’ve visited in any Greek island. The staff are always cleaning. The breakfasts were fab, all you’d require to set you up for the day ahead from pastries to salads, cereals and cooked items. Cannot fault breakfast at all. The taverna is great also. We ate there very often and again top quality local Greek cuisine. Big shout out to Tasos who looked after us for two weeks in the restaurant. No you cannot take your own food/drink items into the restaurant or the sun loungers but so what. The beach out back is stoney but lovely. The loungers and an umbrella cost €15 for the day. I do think residents should get them free but to be honest we were out most days sight seeing so only paid once for a day on them. The sea is fantastic to have on your doorstep so we never missed a pool. The location is great and just outside the main town area so road noise etc isn’t a problem. There are other bars and restaurants within 100m also. All in all a fab little place to stay and see a fantastic island. I gave 4/5 as some staff need to go on smiling courses. Very efficient but no real interaction but that is my only gripe and from a great two weeks stay it isn’t much to complain about. I would recommend the Avra wholeheartedly.

    Never again

    rating07 Aug 2025

We started off by buying two sunbeds expecting a relaxing beach day, but quickly ran into frustrating rules. You’re not allowed to bring your own snacks or drinks – not even a bottle of water or something light from the bakery. I understand that kind of policy in fully closed resorts, but this is a public beach. It felt over-controlled, with staff walking around seemingly scouting who’s “breaking the rules.”The roomsThe rooms are noisy – paper-thin walls. You’ll hear your neighbors talking, showering, flushing, everything. If you’re sensitive to sound or value a good night’s sleep, this is a serious downside. The beach experienceHonestly, the beach is stressful. There’s constant noise from boats and jet skis, and a non-stop stream of sellers from 9 AM trying to offer massages, trinkets, or boat tours. We’re talking 10+ sellers walking back and forth all day. It becomes exhausting – not exactly the peaceful vacation vibe you hope for.The townEven walking through the streets is intense. Every corner is packed with booths selling boat trips, and you’ll get asked again and again. In a 300-meter stretch we counted around eight stands. It reminded me more of touristy parts of Turkey than Thailand.Extra tip: Bring noise-cancelling earbuds – not just for the traffic or people, but because the crickets are literally screaming all day long.Final thoughtsIf you’re looking for a high-energy place with lots of hustle and don’t mind being approached constantly, this might work for you. But if you’re after peace, flexibility, or even basic relaxation, this place misses the mark. For us, it was a clear never again.

    Perfect 👌

    rating05 Aug 2025

Approx 35 mins transfer from airport - lovely welcome from reception and rooms were ready for a 2pm arrival. There isn’t a lift which is not a problem to us and all first floor rooms.Rooms have basic furnishings, very clean, bed very comfortable, good air con, modern bathroom and small balcony - perfect ! We knew what to expect from reviews and research so don’t expect opulence, this is a great small family run hotel.Breakfast good, plenty to suit all tastes, if you can’t find something you fancy then I would say you are a picky eater. All staff were absolutely lovely and nothing is too much trouble, to be fair we didn’t need anything other than asking for some champagne flutes to take on the beach to see the sun rise one morning for my birthday. You may choose to eat breakfast inside or step outside to the garden and look out to the sea which is a rather relaxing experience .The beach is narrow and pebbly and yes you have to hire sun beds , as I would expect from a hotel of this size. The sea is warm and clear, yes it does get slight stirred up if any jet skis or boats are going passed & yes the sea bed is stoney if you are only paddling so would recommend sea shoes, so remember to pack them and not complain on here that you weren’t aware!Location is superb, tucked away from the main area with a short 3/4 mins walk to the main road with lots of good bars and restaurants and shops which is pedestrianised from 2pm throughout the evening, you can walk harbour side again for many great tavernas , all traditional Greek and lots of bars for a drink. We hired a jeep for 3 days so explored the island and it’s many beautiful beaches and came across lots of beach bars to chill and watch the sunset. All in all an excellent experience as we knew what to expect and don’t spend all our time in the hotel, it is a base, if you want an all inclusive, entertainment and a pool then this isn’t for you - if you want calm, relaxing, authentic, welcoming and friendly then this will be for you!Nb. Adjacent to the hotel is the Taverna, which I believe may be run by the same family which provides good food for lunch, and evening shouldyou wish - good beer is served in ice cold glasses and the local vino isn’t too bad either !
