We were disappointed to find our shower looking dirty with black mold. We have traveled to Iceland 6 times and have stayed at Hotel South Coast many visits. The standards have changed for this hotel. During our trip in May 2026, we stayed at 13 hotels and Hotel South Coast was the only 1 not clean. It made us question if they overlooked the shower matter what else may not be clean in the room. We tried to resolve the matter with the hotel manager requesting a small discount over several emails and were not compensated for the dirty shower. We feel the hotel manager should have been inspecting the rooms and noticed this matter since it had been accumulating for some time.This was the Hotel Manager reply: We appreciate your concerns regarding the appearance of the shower area. As previously mentioned, following your report, the bathroom was inspected, and our findings confirmed that the discoloration observed was related to aging shower seals and mineral deposits, not mold or mildew. The pink residue noted in the shower area is a common surface biofilm that can develop in wet environments and, while understandably unpleasant in appearance, does not pose a health risk.That said, we fully recognize that the condition of the shower did not meet the standard we aim to provide our guests. For that reason, we have already taken steps to replace the affected seals and address the appearance issues you brought to our attention. After carefully reviewing your request, we do not feel that a refund would be appropriate in this case. The room remained fully usable throughout your stay, and our inspection found no health or safety concern requiring the room to be removed from service. While we regret that the appearance of the shower negatively affected your experience, the issue did not constitute a deficiency that would warrant a refund of the accommodation charges. We did not request a full refund but a discount because the shower is part of the room and it did affect our stay!Plus, when you research mold in a shower: black mold or mildew in shower grout and caulk (seals) is a form of contamination. It is a fungus that feeds on organic materials like soap scum, dead skin cells, and body oils trapped in the porous. The black color indicates an active colony, and while it is "dirty" in the sense that it thrives on grime, it also means your shower is holding onto trapped moisture. So, we will never stay here again! There are so many other new hotel choices with Iceland growth in travel, it’s our favorite destination. A great hotel in Selfoss to consider is Hotel Loa. We had stayed at the end of our trip, greeted by the hotel manager, and loved our stay.

Hotel facilities were great, unfortunately I didi not have time to check to fitness room. Parking available minimally, charging stations available, unfortunately customers driving normal car do not understand the impotance of those to electric vehicle drivers…fortunately fast chargers available also nearby. Breakfast average motel/three-star-hotel quality.

Nice hotel in central Selfoss

Hotel South Coast is conveniently located right off of Route 1 and in walking distance to many places to dine and shop in Selfoss. There is parking on-site, and it was easy to find. The building itself is quite nice, with small common spaces throughout. The breakfast was a bit chaotic and unpleasant given how crowded it was. We went quite early in the morning (as early as you can go), and we could hardly find a seat still. The spread for breakfast was quite large, though it felt picked over given how crowded breakfast was. We ended up having to sit in the lobby at a table there because there were no open tables in the dining area, so I’d advise going down especially early for breakfast during peak seasons. The room itself was comfortable and clean. It was quite warm, and we could not open the windows due to several large spiders nested right outside. There was some sound if you’re facing the main road, including from neighbors across the street yelling but it settled after around 9pm or so. There’s a small concession stand area in the lobby to purchase beer and wine, which was enjoyed for a drink after settling in for the night. Overall, this hotel was great and comfortable, and we’d stay again despite some minor pain points.
