Lovely stay at Gajah Biru, Ubud, Bali

    rating21 Apr 2026

We stayed here earlier this week. The rooms were newly updated and very spacious. We had a large outdoor terrace with two beautiful clean pools to choose from. Several of us ate dinner at Mannas Restaurant on site, and all the food was delicious. A jazz band play wonderful music that evening. Our breakfast the next morning was excellent, with lots of food options to choose from. We highly recommend staying at Gajah Biru if you are visiting Ubud.

    A mixed experience

    rating26 Feb 2024

We stayed 3 nights at Gajah Biru in their Cinnamon room and found it a mixed experience. It’s a good location in a lovely garden of flowering plants with a pool and we’d wake to bird song. The staff were friendly and helpful and their family’s restaurant across the lane, Two Sisters, was quite good. The ceiling fan and ac both worked well which we were glad for. The problems we had are fixable and we shared them with the owner so hopefully they’ll be repaired for future guests. The thatch on the ceiling of the room sheds an unfortunate gritty dust that is particularly a problem above the bed. They have cardboard laid high above the bed between the 4 posters to catch most of it, but it doesn’t extend across all of the bed and we’d wake with sore throats from what fell during the night. Our sink had trouble draining and the shower was only a trickle, but we think the head just needs replaced. There were also quite a few bugs in the bathroom, but that’s not uncommon in Bali and there was a shy little toad who would come out at night to eat them. :)We also suggest that during such hot weather the hotel not put heavy European style duvets on the beds but just thin sheets. We give the grounds and staff a 5 and the shower and bed a 1. If repairs are made we would stay again, but we’d check the room first, and hopefully the other rooms don’t have these issues.

The room was ok not clean as I wouldHave liked bathroom was questionable . I stayed one night as we arrived late. Went to have a shower no running water the front desk said give me a hour to get it working 2 hours later not working still. I decided to leave I was booked to stay a week but did not won’t to ruin my holiday. As the reasoning they said was they are new management for pour handling of the matter.

    bad booking experience

    rating15 May 2023

I did not have the chance to stay at the hotel because they requested me to cancel my reservation because the room style "villa Bunda" I booked was no longer available. I was sure "villa Bunda" was available at the moment I made the reservation. This is the first time I have encountered this. It is really a bad experience, I am very unhappy. This hotel has no integrity at all.

    Quiet little corner of Ubud

    rating25 Jun 2021

We stayed at Gajah Biru twice, first on arrival to Ubud and then again as a stopover from Mt. Batur to Gili Islands. Tucked away from the main road of Ubud yet close enough for people to be able to walk it to the main road, Gajah Biru (meaning Blue Elephant) is very well located. They have tie ups with local drivers and taxis and will be happy to arrange pick ups from and drops to the airport. In fact, the hotel had arranged for our transportation to whatever sites we wanted to visit from Ubud. The property itself is not large but is extremely cosy. The number of rooms are limited but the rooms are large. We had booked a family room that was very close to the swimming pool and had its own balcony. On our second visit we had the private family suite at the back of the property, which also features a private pool. The rooms are fairly well appointed, especially the more expensive private family suite. However it was the hospitality of the staff I recall most. Whether it was something they needed to fix or a service they needed to offer or simply a good morning wish, the staff was always super friendly. They were trustworthy enough for us to leave our daughters at the spa for a massage while my wife and I went for our own spa treatment to the nearby Tjampuhan Spa.The only thing this hotel lacks is a restaurant. Nonetheless they will give you breakfast coupons with which you will have to walk less than 50 metres to a restaurant at the beginning of the lane where you get excellent breakfast. The staff at Gajah Biru will also serve you food from the restaurant for a relaxed in-room dining experience. In addition, this place is within walking distance of a bunch of warungs where we (I in particular) gorged on excellent Nasi Goreng that was washed down with Bintang Radler. If I had to sum up, I'd say Gajah Biru is an excellent place for people who are looking to spend some quiet time in comfortable and clean surroundings without having to burn a hole through their wallets. For us, it was everything we had hoped it would be.
