  One night was too many.

  When I arrived, I was told my room was ready I was taken to a room with 2x double beds. I was travelling alone and specifically booked 3 night in a one bedroom with balcony & ocean view. The room was on floor level, facing the opposite building. But a beds a bed so I settled in & leave to find a meal. While leaving the owners wife asks if it’s just me staying, I say yes, she tells me that they might move me then, into the building opposite which is single rooms, “no worries, okay” I reply. After dinner I had a container with leftovers, I go to use the unplugged fridge inside the room. I opened it and straight away there was that foul smell of a fridge gone bad. It didn’t just stink, it looked dirty too. The top & upper mosquito net fabric on both beds were covered in small clusters of either dust/dirt or the beginnings of mould. I wasn’t game to find out which. The bed was comfortable.Second day I get back from diving to find they have indeed moved me to the other room. Which I initially booked. The ocean view was nice. This room, however had its own unpleasant surprises. The aircon functioned but it definitely didn’t work! I set it to 22 degrees on cool mode, & left for several hours, I got back & the room wasn’t the slightest bit cooler. I set it to 18 degrees, no difference. After trying every other setting I gave up and turned it off. The outside air was cooler the the room, for 2 nights I slept sweating under a mosquito net with balcony doors wide open. The big square pillow smelt baldy of dried spit. Someone drooled in their sleep A LOT.. and the smell lingered. One of the two towels they provided also smelt used and unclean. Third day, that morning the owners wife approaches me and asks “maybe I’d like to eat there tonight, do I like chicken and what time do I want dinner?” I say “okay, yeah chickens good, not too spicy and 6pm please.” That afternoon the owner asks where I’m travelling to next, I tell him and the cost for transport there which I’d arranged with someone else earlier that day. He tells me that “I should’ve asked him, he’d of taken me, I’m paying far too much, no that’s too much money, he’d look after me & as his guest it’s his job to take care of me.” I actually cancel my initial ride & agree to go with him, exchanging whatsup. I arrive back at hotel and there’s some confusion about dinner, he says no, she’s not doing dinner.. I ask him again, he seems sure there’s no dinner happening, I’d just been out, could’ve easily had a meal where I was but chose to leave to come back for the dinner we’d arranged. He leaves shortly after his wife comes out, begins preparing food. It’s roughly 8pm when I eat dinner, she apologises and tells me she was sleeping. But hey, after all that - it was a very tasty meal, she is a good cook. The crux of it all is this - after all that, the owner has drove me to my next destination, taken the same $$ amount he’d insisted was outrageous and told me to give hotel 10/10 on booking.com. Then over next 24hrs badgered me on whatsup for the rating.

  Pros: The location is excellent. The owner is helpful and kind. The pool was ok.Cons: Cleanliness was absolutely lacking. The room is dirt (spiderwebs on the whole upper part and dead insects on the floor) and with inadequate lighting, and the bathroom is terrible, very dirt and almost dark. The A/C in our room was so noisy we had to turn it off nighttime, in order to get some sleep. The staff usually consists of just two people, thus insufficient to provide an adequate service, let alone a good one. The towels have never been changed in 6 days. The room has been "cleaned" (to be generous) only once in 6 days, while the bathroom has never been cleaned. The many trash bins are emptied only once every several days, and so are the trash sacks lying near the reception. Furthermore, I strongly suggest the guests NOT to look at the interiors of the kitchen. The place has a very good potential, but - given the actual conditions - we would not recommend it at all. The prices of the offered services (e.g. transport, snorkelling equipment rental etc) are expensive, compared to the prices in Amed area.

  My stay was great, the place is quiet and really beautiful. The owners are kind, I enjoy the breakfast a lot.The restaurant is in front of the ocean, you can enjoy the view when you eat.The room is clean and comfortable

  Some of those bad reviews must be from different management. We had a lovely 3 day stay at Amed and would come back again if we could. Everyone we dealt with was lovely, expecialy the cook, he was very friendly and kind. The breakfast was simple but did the trick, it had an amazing view, looking straight over the ocean.We hired flippers and googles and spent a day snorkling. And another day hired some scooters to go exploring.Rooms are very basic, no tv, but had AC and large bathrooms. They were very clean and not one bit of mould to be seen.Every day there was a lady sweeping the patio fronts and the leaves on the path, and there was men de nutting the coconuts. Best place to visit if you want to see a different side of Bali

  Great stay on the beach

  Everyone at the Rising Star was extremely helpful and nice. The place is gorgeous. Right on the water with delicious breakfast and a very pleasant pool facing the ocean. The owner was very accommodating and helped us with transport to the airport and with the renting of motorbikes. Will definitely be back
