Pleasant staff and good breakfast, but serious cleanliness issues

We stayed at the Palace Hotel in Bologna as a family of four, including an infant, in Junior Suite 312. There were some definite positives. The staff were pleasant and responsive, and we enjoyed the breakfast. The junior suite was very basic, but it was functional and provided adequate space for our family.Unfortunately, the condition and cleanliness of the hotel were disappointing. The carpets throughout the hotel appeared dirty and worn, and the carpet in our room was particularly bad. Although it was a light-colored carpet and didn’t initially look terrible, we discovered just how dirty it was when our baby crawled across it. Her feet turned black from the carpet. After that, we were uncomfortable letting her play on the floor.The furnishings also need attention. The sofa in Room 312 was badly worn, with several significant tears in the upholstery on both arms. The room was extremely minimally equipped as well, with essentially no amenities beyond towels and toilet paper.We don’t mind an older or basic hotel, and dated furnishings alone wouldn’t have been a major concern. But cleanliness is different, particularly when traveling with a baby. The carpeting in our room needs a thorough professional cleaning or replacement, and the damaged furniture should be repaired or replaced.We appreciated the helpful staff and good breakfast, but given the condition and cleanliness of Room 312, we would not stay here again without significant improvements.

I don’t understand why this hotel has so many negative reviews. Yes, the low rating made me second guess booking here, but I’m so glad I took the chance. It is dated, but in a lovely nostalgic way. I found all areas clean and my room well was maintained throughout my 3 night stay. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was a wonderful selection of everything from pastries to scrambled eggs. Decent amount to choose from even as a vegetarian. I can see why people say about the air con being inappropriate as it didn’t have much effect. However we are experiencing heatwaves so everywhere was incredibly hot. I simply turned the air con off and opened the window which was fine, and had beautiful views of Bologna. The location is absolutely superb. Perfect for seeing all the top sights Bologna has to offer. Location was easy to walk to from the train station, and it was quiet. Thank you Hotel Palace for a lovely stay!

Expensive for what you get ....it should be made very clear there is no air con, only a small fan In the room which seems to be ridiculous.and dangerous with current temperatures. Out dated small room and bathroom. Staff were friendly ..location was good ..however will not be returning ..found the room quite claustrophobic as very small and very hot.

At the time of writing this, I fly back to the uk tomorrow. What can I say. I’ve been here for 9 days as a solo traveller. Never been to Bologna or even Italy. This was an absolutely amazing experience. The hotel staff are so friendly and nice. Breakfast staff are amazing. Reception staff nothing is too much. My room was basic, not even a kettle, which might have been nice to wake up with a coffee, but I didn’t mind and you get used to it. I had breakfast included and food was nice. And I just going back for more. Well worth a stay 10/10 and a massive thank you for making my stay amazing. The hotel is situated so close to the square. It’s literally up a small alley. Cross the main road and you there

Hotel Palace Bologna deserves its name; it has a large and very nice old style lobby, and a large number of rooms. Mine was perfect for a solo traveller, with a nice desk and very functional bathroom, even if the plumbing was a bit old style. Also I could look out over the roofs of the city, which is enjoyable, and even though it was located under the roof, the airconditiong kept the temperature right where I wanted it. The corridors may be a bit labyrinthic, and the stairs to the 5th floor elusive (of course I used the elevator most of the time, but some times you don't want to wait), but that was part of the charm of the place. Breakfast was plentiful and featured a lot of diversity, I especially enjoyed the pancakes, but you could have cereals with milk or with a variety of vegetal substitutes, several kinds of croissant, eggs and bacon, Italian pastries (that were different every day), and of course a range of hot and cold drinks.
