Convenient Location, But Much Room for Improvement

    rating09 Nov 2025

If you are travelling through Civitavecchia and simply need a bed for the night close to the ferry or cruise terminal, Hotel Mediterraneo offers a convenient location. It’s within easy walking distance of the port, the train station, and a number of bars and restaurants. But beyond that logistical advantage, there is little to recommend this hotel.A Dated and Neglected InteriorThe moment I stepped into my room, it was clear that this hotel has seen better days. The entire property feels outdated and tired, with little evidence of recent investment or care. While I understand that not every hotel needs to be modern or luxurious, there is a basic level of maintenance and cleanliness that any accommodation should meet, and unfortunately, this hotel fell far short.I was assigned a single room which, although expectedly compact, felt more like a forgotten storage space than a guest room. The furniture was worn and mismatched, and the narrow bed was uninviting. The walls and door posts were marked and damaged, and the bedside lamp was hanging loosely, appearing as though it could fall at any moment. The air in the room was heavy with a musty, stale odour that made the space feel anything but fresh. I’ve stayed in many simple hotels over the years and can usually appreciate older or traditional style, but in this case, it simply came across as neglected.Limited Amenities and Lack of CareAmenities in the room were almost non-existent. There was a small refrigerator that barely worked, a basic wardrobe with only a few hangers, and a bathroom stocked with thin towels and an all-in-one body wash/shampoo of very poor quality. There were no extra touches, no effort to offer comfort, and no signs of thoughtful hospitality. Cleanliness was also subpar. While the room wasn’t filthy, it didn’t feel properly cleaned either. It was the kind of space where you check for dust and hesitate before unpacking your suitcase.A Disengaged Guest ExperienceInteractions with staff were entirely functional. Breakfast was served, check-out was processed, and questions were answered, but there was little friendliness or engagement throughout the stay. While I do not expect five-star service in a budget hotel, some level of warmth or attentiveness goes a long way in making a guest feel welcome. Here, the experience was entirely transactional. It did the job, but it didn’t leave any impression of genuine hospitality.Final ThoughtsHotel Mediterraneo relies almost entirely on its location to attract guests. And while it does offer a convenient base for catching a train, ferry, or cruise, the accommodation itself is simply not up to standard. The building is outdated, the rooms are poorly maintained and lack comfort, and the service is indifferent.I’m giving this hotel two stars. It would have received three if the room had been in better condition and properly cleaned. As it stands, it feels like a property operating on autopilot, without any sense of pride in the guest experience. This hotel could still serve a purpose for travellers in urgent need of a one-night stopover, but even in that case, I would recommend setting expectations very low.

    Very Disappointing Stay

    rating08 Oct 2025

This hotel was booked with Booking.Com prior to catching a cruise ship. This hotel is in real need of a renovation the electrics in our room were dangerous please see photo the mould in between the tiles meant hadn’t been throughly cleaned for a long time, again look a photo. Couldn’t recommend this hotel except it has a prominent position opposite the sea

    1 star for my room.

Bathrooms are both filled with black mould, the paint is peeling and bathroom fan in one bathroom does not work at all. Shower water floods the bathroom. Shower spray stings and cannot be adjusted. Water heads leaks and sprays upwards. Walls in the bedrooms and corridors are soiled and scuffed, corridors smell like cigarette smoke. Would not stay here again. The pictures on their website does not paint a true picture of room 231. Very disappointed. Thankfully I was only here one night. Not recommended.

    Walk away!

    rating29 Sept 2025

We stayed here for a cruise rather than in Rome as we had visited the city numerous times and the port is a good distance from the center. The only good thing about this hotel is the proximity to the cruise port. Mind you, you really can't walk to the ship. The locals have quite a racket on how much they can rip you off to get the cruise terminal and it seems overly complicated. The hotel is dingy and dirty. I saw mold in the bathroom. The flooring was chipped. The toilet requires sitting at an angle! The hotel next door seemed a bit better. On top of it all, it was not cheap! I would certainly not return.

    Good for a short stay.

    rating30 Aug 2025

Stayed for one night before our cruise. Check in was easy, and the staff were friendly. Our room was an excellent size and clean. Excellent location, short walk to the beach and shops. I was a little worried based on some of the other reviews, but was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed our short stay.
