    Don’t be deceived by posted pictures - bait and switch

    After scrolling through the breath-taking photos at SunBay and envision basking in the sun by the sparkling pool, or enjoying a cocktail at the quaint bar… think again.The hotel’s pictures have either been photo-shopped, or they were taken a decade ago.If there was ever a case for bait and switch, this is it. The Sun Bay hotel is much like an aging star… its good years are a thing of the very distant past. It is rundown, dilapidated, and a broken shell of its former self.This hotel sits on a beautiful piece of waterfront real estate, and that’s its best attribute. Thankfully, the rooms were clean. However, the chipped paint, broken lights, old bathroom and furniture need to be addressed.There’s not enough lipstick in the world to put on this pig. And, maybe that would be ok if the hotel was honest enough to pictures of what this hotel really looks like.Travelers - know before you go! (Post your pics - here are ours) - Oct. 2025

    As other reviews have stated - do everything in your power not to stay here! It's possible that all the hotels in Citivecchia are of the same quality - as another reviewer said that they basically get a free ride for proximity to the cruise port. The entire place needs to be rehabbed. I'm sure it was a beautiful place in the 1950s but nothing has been changed since then. For a single night stay the rooms were serviceable but I certainly would not recommend this place.Beyond the general ambiance, staff were mostly rude. We were trying to sit out on the balcony in front of the lobby and were shoo-ed away from the tables. They did a prix-fix dinner menu - AVOID AVOID AVOID. Had we thought to explore the area a bit more we would have seen there were a couple places within walking distance. Instead, we had the weirdest meal service of our lives. The "included" breakfast in the morning wasn't much better.

    Decrepit, dirty, broken down hotel

    One of the worst, if not the worst 4 Star hotel we ever stayed in. Decrepit facility, a once-in-a-long-time-ago 4 Star hotel now reduced to a cheap hourly hotel. Dirty room, broken faucets, broken light fixtures, cheese door. Yes, they still give you an actual metal key. Broken steps. The poor woman at the front desk could have not being nicer. We simply told us that a night on that saggy, old mattress would have done us in. Remove three star, charge €50/ night, and it would still be the wrong place.Stay away, avoid at all costs.

    Shockingly bad. The approach to the hotel in ge taxi didn't bode well when the masses of fag butts and crumbling plaster cane into view. The guy on reception was surly and dismissive although the lady was lovely. Tge walk to the room was live going into a time warp, going further and further back in time as you walked down the corridor until you reached the 1950s room. There were dead mosquitos on the shoddily painted walls, the skirting boards had separated from the walls in places, there were light fittings dangling off the walls in the bathroom which was full of mould, and there were dirty greasy marks on the bed head boards. The lovely pool advertised hadn't in fact been in service for years and was just a giant bucket of green slime, so if you do want to swim you need to go next door at extra cost. We spent a fortune at vastly over priced restaurants trying to get enough wine down us for a decent night's sleep but kept awake all night as the AC sounded like Clarksons tractor. We thought things would improve at breakfast but the terrace was wasp central, the "hot" breakfast was stone cold and "chilled" yoghurt luke warm. 4 star hotel??? My @rse!!! It's fair to say that if I was a migrant and given a room there I'd be getting back on the boat.

    Please DO NOT book this hotel.As reflected by many other reviews, this hotel should be shut down and re refitted out. It wasn't the best start to our cruise holiday. The hotel is basically getting a free ride, based on the proximity to the cruise port.From bugs in the room to terrible beds and furniture, do yourself a favor and stay in Rome and then up early to catch the train to Civitavecchia.A word of caution on taxis, if you do stay here then make sure that you either book a transfer via the cruise company or with the hotel directly, we had wrongly assumed that it would be simple to get an Uber, it turns out that it is not.
