    Very convenient hotel for train travelers

    This hotel is not as bad as the other reviews suggest. If you have the right expectations, this hotel does the job. I was there with my family for a vacation this past summer. We were taking a cruise from Genoa. We were looking for a hotel near the train station so we could do a self guided excursion to Cinque Terre and Pisa. We needed a hotel near the train station and of the two train stations in Genoa, Brignole is in a nicer (safer) area than Principe. Of the hotels near Brignole, this hotel is the closest and largest. It is an older hotel though they were undergoing renovation when I stayed there. We had 3 renovated rooms and one not renovated. The renovated rooms are very modern with new bathrooms and key card entry. The older room did seem like it was from the late 80s early 90s era with a keyholed door and a large key on a bulky keychain. You have the option of leaving the key at the front desk if you don’t want to carry it around. Though I would find a large metal key annoying if I had to stay here often, I found the nostalgia to be quite interesting and the room, though old was clean and the mattress was replaced recently and was comfortable. Service at the front desk and from the bell staff was very good and attentive. The restaurant also had good service though the menu may be a little limited for foreign travelers. The dishes are mostly regional dishes. But definitely try the pesto. It was invented in Genoa and is excellent. As mentioned before, this hotel is a quick 5 minute walk to the Brignole train station where the main intercity and high speed trains are located. There is also a subway stop here. The location is very convenient if you are using the train system. Overall, I would recommend this hotel if your plans call for train travel. Once the renovations are completed, it will be a top choice in the area.     The breakfast was okay. Our room was terrible. It looked like an old hotel room somewhere in East Europe in the 80’s or like a servant’s room - for high price . We choose this hotel based on photos, location and prices , but we were very disappointed.     While we were happy with the location and the hotel itself I’m really disappointed that a week after a pre authorization card payment (in addition to a full card payment for my stay on checkout) the pre authorization amount is still not available in my bank account - effectively meaning at the minute of writing I’ve paid twice for my stay … I’ve called the hotel and they were not helpful … would like to warn other travelers of this Alessia Carini, Guest Services / Front Office at Starhotels President, responded to this review Dear Niallo402,thank Thank you for taking the time to share with us your review.We are glad you found the location and the hotel living up to your expectations.In regards of the method of payments, the system take pre-authorizations on guest’s credit card for the the 1st night to guarantee the reservation (this is not a payment but a block of the amount).     The hotel has comfortable rooms. Beds have good mattress. They have added computerized controls in room.Lobby is spacious. Staff at front desk is helpful and friendly. The hotel is close to main shopping outlets.Train and metro stations are at walking distance.     We had to cancel due to the sudden death of my wife's father, we asked the hotel to change our booking dates as this was an exceptional circumstance but they refused. They just replied with a standard response of non-amendable, something we would not except from a hotel such as this. It just showed that they either didn't read our request properly or have no empathy for their customers. Their lack of empathy will put us off stopping at this hotel chain in the future. Just be careful of what type of booking you make as in our case if something unexpected exceptional happens they won't be interested in helping.
