Avoid the Zen Hotel and Mistral Holidays

    rating02 Jan 2026

This hotel was absolutely dreadful, one of the worst we have ever stayed in over more than 45 years of travel. The head waiter Alexander was obnoxious and he made it quite plain that he detested English people and especially since we voted to leave the EU in 2016!. There was no hotel manager to complain to. The only staff at the hotel, apart from the waiting staff under the command of Alexander, were two women who worked on reception during the hours of 7am to 11pm. If they were the hotel managers they had no control over this man who treated both staff and guests with equal contempt. It was not just us, it was many other English guests in our party who found his behaviour objectionable and offensive. This week's holiday was booked through a company called Mistral Holidays and we would strongly avoid anyone to book with them if you don't want unnecessary grief on your holiday. We complained to Mistral holidays about this waiter's behaviour and they didn't want to know. They sided with the hotel and tried to pass off his behaviour as a language problem which we found insulting. Mistral holidays also said they had received no other other complaints from our group either. We have no way of confirming if that is true or not but everyone we spoke to in our group found Alexander's behaviour towards our party dreadful and everyone we spoke to said they would NEVER book another trip with Mistral holidays again. Final advice, Don't ever use Mistral holidays and never stay at the Zen hotel in Tuscany if you value being treated as a guest and not as an inconvenience. Avoid both like the plaque!

    A very comfortable experience

    rating24 Sept 2024

There were two tour groups occupying the hotel in the week that we stayed - one British, one German - so the restaurant was pretty full each evening. However the menus offered some degree of choice within each course and the food was generally good and ample. Of course they make quite a bit on the bar as well!Breakfast is all self-service with choices of various teas, coffee, juices, cereals, fruits, yoghurts, pastries, breads, jams, cakes. There is also a limited 'hot' (i.e. lukewarm) offering of scrambled eggs, baked beans and chopped wurst - definitely not sausages as we know them. Our room was on the 4th floor and exceptionally large when compared to others on the fire escape map. The bathroom facilities were very good and the bed was spacious and comfortable. There was plenty of storage space and the operating instructions for the safe were easy to understand. Our balcony had a side view so we could see the mountains and the sea.Don't expect much from the TV - there are no English language channels at all!If the AC settings on the wall fail to work, it is likely that it has been blocked by reception when the last guests checked out. They can turn the settings back on.

A hotel to relax in and return to

    rating30 May 2023

Staff were friendly, were patient with my appalling Italian, but all spoke excellent English and German.Breakfasts were vary varied and catered for all tastes, from cold meats and cheeses, delicious breads and pastries and a choice of cooked eggs and sausage. Dinners were plentiful though I would have liked many more vegetables, but it’s an Italian thing that the dinner followed the usual pattern - self serve antipasti, different pastas each evening ( my favourite was with a Gorgonzola and pear sauce), followed by a meat or fish course with potatoes or a green veg. Puddings were varied and wines were excellent, though I recommend the Aperol Spritz! Of course, there was an a la Carte menu that provided great variety. We chose the hotel because it was modern, and we were not disappointed. A spacious lounge and comfortable dining room, and the bedroom was a good size with a balcony overlooking the Apuan Alps. Try a higher floor for the view though beware that people on the excellent pool and sunbathing area on the roof could lean over to see you. The furniture on the balcony was uncomfortable and both chairs were broken and needed replacement. The internet was free but variable, so I wouldn’t rely on it. Luckily we didn’t want to watch television but, had we, there were no English speaking channels, not even a news one. I would suggest this was the one a gap in the services. Were we to return to the area I would have no hesitation in staying here.

Mixed… service appalling in some areas

    rating26 May 2023

The hotel is generally good.. comfortable rooms and clean facilities. The food is excellent and plentiful. However a couple of the staff leave a lot to be desirable…. One receptionist in particular is very nasty… patronising and rude. We quite reasonably asked a couple of times for more shower gel as the minute sachets were not sufficient for two people showering twice a day. She said in a very sarcastic way that it was funny that we were the only room requesting this. Also when we had a problem with the safe, she rolled her eyes and tutted implying that we were an inconvenience to her. We will be complaining directly to the senior manager about this horrible staff member. She needs training in customer service or be sacked…Another staff member told us off for taking a banana from the breakfast buffet!! Absurd, given that you can have as much as you like and there is no shortage of food. Pathetic…

    Excellent place to stay

    rating18 Jun 2022

We stayed a week at Hotel Zen Versilia and were very impressed with almost everything about this hotel. It was very clean, the food was excellent with a wide range of choice and the rooms were lovely. We had a very large comfortable bed with a mountain view balcony. There was plenty of room and the air conditioning was perfect. The bathroom was well appointed - the towels were plentiful, very large and fluffy.I did have to ask for a plastic mat as the shower tray waslethally slippy when wet.I enjoyed the pool very much despite it being only 90cm deep and I had a good swim every day.The hotel is in a residential area and is a 12 minute walk to the beach and bus stops each way. (Buses available to Pietrasanta, Lucca and Viareggio, there’s a Tabacchi to buy tickets on the way.)It is a 15-20 minute walk to the ‘pier’ - a very long fishing jetty with statues but no shade. The hotel is probably too far out of the centre for those of lesser mobility. The only other point they need to sort is the pool towels. They leave a pile there unguarded and some people take 3 or 4 and newcomers have to go back down to reception to ask for more. The sunloungers are not comfortable and there’s only 6.Toasting one’s back is very tricky and there’s no mattresses. However, all in all this is a lovely hotel with wonderful staffwho were obliging and helpful. I would stay there again quite happily. It is also very quiet at night.
