Idiotic location but not 4 star performance

    rating18 May 2025

The setting overlooking the Umbrian countryside and the character of the old building is wonderful but there are a number of things that let it down, so it fell short of a 4 star experience for us and our small group.I believe it was converted to a hotel 40 years ago and the bathrooms look like it. Dirty and missing grout and sealant, no basin plug and many of our group had problems with leaking shower screen. The fridge contained two bottles of water when we arrived for our 5 day stay but we were told we would not get any more, this was just a welcome gesture. There was a kettle in the room but nothing to go with it, after the second day they put in two cups and a bowl of sugars but no coffee or tea! There was no mattress protector on the beds and the electrical sockets are for the old smaller diameter pins, the TV did not work even after the hotel tried resetting it.We had quite fun cookery course but hard to tell how good the restaurant was as we were on a pre-arranged set menu. We could have done without a dog being allowed in the restaurant which barked a lot and the staff would not do anything about it.Our rooms on the first floor had a terrace which gave wonderful views of the countryside. They do however need to modernise rooms and service as it is only a 4 star on paper i.e. it ticks the right boxes like a pool (normally only open from June), a spa (only available booked in advance) and a 24 hour reception.

    Una Notte in Umbria

    rating07 Apr 2025

Had the pleasure of spending a night here whilst house hunting in the area. Very welcoming, friendly staff and such a beautiful location up in the Umbrian hills. We had a garden terrace room which at sun down, had the best views to die for. A couple of Negronis on the terrace and then dinner in the restaurant. Best cinghiale Raghu and the smoothest bottle of Chianti. Very charismatic setting and location and topped by a good night’s sleep! Only fault was the Luke warm and tired shower fittings. Other than that, 100% recommended!

    Magical place!

    rating04 Aug 2024

When I saw this place online, I decided that it was the place where I wanted to be.It's rare to find a hotel where the reality is much better than the pictures!Well appointed room, great breakfast, stunning location. And, on top of that, a superb service: it's unusual to find such committed and warm people at every level, from the maid, maintenance, waitress up to the front desk.It has been by far one of the best stay in the last years. However, perfection is not of this world: due the the unusual hot weather, our A/C was struggling. They tried everything, several times, unfortunately to no avail.Despite this inconvenience, I am strongly recommend this Hotel.

    A real castle relaxing stay.

    rating10 Jul 2024

This relais has a magical setting, high up on the hill and the building is an original 500-600 year old town that they have converted into a castle full of rooms and seperate apartments. We stayed only one night with our two young children in a classic room and it was very comfortable. We were shown a superior room that was just beautiful and spacious with a lovely Juliet window looking over the castle piazza. We only chose the classic as it had an upgraded air conditioner on a 36 degree day otherwise we would have loved to stay in the superior. The price is exceptionally reasonable, of course the rooms are not contemporary as they are decorated more old fashioned to fit in with the aesthetic of the castle. Hubby and the kids had a marvellous swim in the lovely pool that overlooks a view beyond unbelievable, while I watched with a few lovely vinos the bar had on offer. Breakfast has plenty to choose from and is also on the terrace with this picturesque view. Staff were friendly at all times. Check in and check out were easy. You definitely need a car to get here. We would love to come back next time for a few more days to enjoy the castle and area more.

    Perfect for wedding

    rating01 Jul 2024

We planned our wedding at the Relais il Canalicchio with close family and friends. Overall, we had a very pleasant experience, very clean rooms, good breakfast, good options at the restaurant, lovely 360 views.Francesca thoughtfully helped us plan our wedding taking care of all the requests we had and helping with menu, flowers, music. She was very nice to have a couple of videocalls with us prior to the wedding in order to meet and discuss all the details. She even helped us with flowers, music etc.The rooms were lovely, the terraces had a great view, the tower room was also nice, only we had a bit of bad luck as the night prior to the wedding there was a big thunderstorm that caused a minor flood in the tower room which led to an electrical power failure and caused a delay in the wedding schedule. The staff was very friendly, especially one of the waiters named Hamza who was really cool and tried to accommodate all our requests, despite his superior, a woman named Sandra, who did not want to serve us after midnight and was rude to us repeatedly, even though we did not make any disturbance.Would recommend booking a couple of days here for your special event or for a retreat get-away.
