    Hotel Residenza in Farnese 👍🏻

We had a most enjoyable stay! The staff were always welcoming and accommodating! Housekeeping kept our room fresh and clean each day! The location is perfect. Close to major tourist sites and a short walk to the restaurants and marketplace in Campo Di Fiori. It was also a short walk across the bridge to enjoy more restaurants in Trastevere. The hotel breakfast was there to start our day and there was also a bar to enjoy a drink and a large outdoor space on the rooftop to relax and enjoy. We would definitely stay here again!

The room we got was much smaller looking than pictured. It was clean though. The air conditioning int he room could not be controlled. It was April and it wasn't even on. I could open the window but would have preferred the air.Breakfast was good.

Hotel Residenza in Farnese? Horrible Rotten Fiasco

    rating20 Feb 2026

Let’s get the good out of the way first - the location is superb. The hotel is within walking distance of almost every Roman sight you could wish to see. Comfortably so. Even with small children. Every day we managed to walk to every sight we wanted to see - our step count was amazing and within reach of the hotel there are plenty of options for food, be it lunch or dinner. Now the less good - I booked through Booking.com but could not facilitate payment through the platform. The reason for this, so my credit card company told me, is that the hotel merchant terminal does not meet the security standards set by my credit card company (all three of them). So I couldn’t pay them. The hotel sent me a message on a Sunday over the platform, telling me they couldn’t take card payment, I needed to send them a wire transfer, or my booking would be cancelled. It felt like a scam. They wanted off platform payment and there was urgency. Every instinct in me said this was a scam. So I did somedue diligence and called them. And no, apparently this is how they do business. They said they needed the first night paid for to keep my booking, so I sent them a wire transfer. When we arrived late on a Sunday night, a large man with an enormous white beard who was offering anything but presents told us that we needed to pay for the whole stay there and then. So I tried to use my credit card. It didn’t work. So I tried another. Then another. None of them would pay - because the merchant terminal does not meet their security standards (they work everywhere else in Rome). I told the man I’d wire the money in the morning. I told him no matter when I wired it, it wouldn’t arrived until morning. That wouldn’t do. As if I were an idiot, he told me that the electricity in the rooms was tied to the billing system and even though I’d paid for the first night, if I did not pay for them all, the electricity would not work. Please. While my wife and I were stood there with two young kids. It was a dreadful experience. Welcome to Rome - how about some blackmail? This is in spite of the fact a wire transfer would not arrive until morning. And I had in fact paid for the first night - so was in fact being denied a service I’d paid for. He insisted. I tried a debit card before doing a wire - it worked. So that was settled (but debit cards do not offer the same protection as a credit card - so beware). Frankly after that experience the hotel would have needed to be heavenly. It wasn’t. It claims to be four stars. It might be four rusty sheriff’s stars, but it is not a four star hotel by any standard I know. Frankly anything we needed was hassle. I wanted an iron and an ironing board. Impossible. But the hotel would iron my clothes for me for a price. Yeah, no thanks. At breakfast the staff were sullen, miserable, standoffish. Everyone else was taken to their tables and served coffee. We were not. We were left to seat ourselves. Front desk staff were dismissive when we spoke to them (except for one lady who was always lovely). Then there was the accommodation. I’m sure back in 1984 it looked ok. Our room, room 306, was dilapidated, tired, and shabby. Every fixture and fitting was knackered, the wardrobes and walls were chipped, the plugs and switches were worn, various things that should have been screwed to the wall were in states of coming off. The smoke alarm - amazingly, was masking taped over - safety first! The beds were formed of nasty thin mattresses that had seen better days. The bathroom was meh - the shower had come from the sale section at whatever the Italian equivalent is to B&Q, it had a flow as weak as a middle aged man’s midnight wee. Fittings were tired and old and my favourite touch - the shower gel and shampoo came in little ‘Dolce Vita’ bottles. Only they all smelt different and none was screwed on straight. I wondered if they had been refilled with something a bit more bargain basement. It would be in keeping. There were no glasses in the room, no bottles of water, and the hot drinks station was sachets of instant coffee. Classy. The breakfast was a calamity. There wasn’t enough of anything. The buffet kept running out. Staff were not on top of it. So it was just poor. The food selection wasn’t as they described on the site in my opinion - the cooked element was… well there wasn’t one. None of the food was hot. Some of it was meant to be - but it wasn’t. Listen it was just awful. It cost us just over a thousand pounds for five nights and it would have been a ripoff at two thirds that. After that first night I wanted out - but we couldn’t find a hotel as close to the centre so we made a decision to rough it out - plus I’d read reviews about the hotel being poor on comms when people wanted their money back so I didn’t fancy that added hassle. It was an awful hotel, it was too expensive, the staff were awful, the breakfast was awful, my first interaction with them felt like a scam, and my second felt like blackmail. I will never stay here again, I will review it liberally wherever I can to warn others, and if anyone asks me about my trip to Rome, when I’m done telling them about this beautiful city, if I have the energy, I’ll invite them to join me in mocking this fiasco of a hotel.

Nice helping staff, rooms get cleaned daily, breakfast is good and best location ever...right by the Tiver river half an hour walk from coliseum, from Vatican city and minutes away from most other attractions.
