Warning – the reception is NOT 24/7

    rating13 Mar 2026

I booked this trip 3–4 months in advance. Even a month before arrival, late in the evening (around 23:30), we contacted the property to confirm that someone would be at the reception when we arrived. We were clearly told that there would be no problem because the reception operates 24/7.However, on the day of our arrival, we discovered that the hotel was already closed and no one was answering the phone. I called around 30 times in the middle of the night in Rome, but there was absolutely no response. We were forced to find accommodation on our own in the middle of the night, which is not easy in a city like Rome without prior arrangements. In the morning, we were simply told that they were sorry, but the rules had changed and no one had bothered to inform us.There was no compensation, no refund, and no attempt to resolve the situation. We had to spend more than €200 extra for another place to stay, even though we already had a confirmed reservation with them. This experience was extremely disappointing and unprofessional.Additionally, the hotel itself was very poorly maintained. The walls were dirty, the hair dryer was damaged, and the TV in the room was not working. On top of that, there was virtually no soundproofing at all. You could clearly hear every noise from the hallway and surrounding areas, which made it very difficult to rest.

Decent hotel at a good price.

Decent hotel at a good price not far from the main railway station. Rooms are basic but clean and not that big but were fine for our needs. Showers were hot and powerful but cubicle small. We were a group of 8 men so only used the room for sleeping. May be a bit small if you want to spend a lot of time in it.

The hotel is located near the train station and on a street with many restaurants. The room was shockingly small but quite adequate. You can hear noise from other rooms and some bizarre bird noises from outside but it was tolerable. The guys at the front desk are great and very accommodating. It’s an old place with a groovy antique elevator. For the price, it was more than fine.

A wonderful place to stay in the heart of Rome!

    rating07 Oct 2025

We booked this hotel months in advance of our trip and got a great rate. I can’t say enough good things about Hotel Sonya. The staff is welcoming and friendly and the lobby seems to be staffed all the time. The rooms are small, but are clean, quiet and comfortable. They had everything we needed to spend our days seeing the city and it was a great place to come back to at night. It’s in a safe neighborhood and we never had any problems walking around. The hotel is in a fantastic location with restaurants and shops to walk to. We walked a couple of doors down every morning and ate breakfast at a wonderful cafe. We got awesome gelato around the corner every day. We shopped for souvenirs and walked to the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and many other Rome landmarks. Hotel Sonya is a great little hotel. I would definitely stay there again.
