Beautiful and peaceful forest location, but disappointing cuisine and service well below expectations.

    rating19 May 2026

Beautiful and very quiet countryside location in the middle of a forest, ideal for guests looking for peace and nature. The setting and atmosphere have real potential.Unfortunately, the service level and especially the cuisine were clearly below the standard one would expect from a hotel in this category. The dining experience was disappointing, both in terms of food quality and service. Overall, the property would benefit from a stronger focus on hospitality and restaurant quality.

A beautiful location alone cannot make up for poor service and hospitality

    rating23 Sept 2025

The property’s setting is undeniably stunning, but unfortunately, the overall experience did not meet expectations.• Room quality: For €150 per night, the room felt poorly maintained—the sofa was damaged with peeling faux leather.• Facilities: The bathroom only had a fixed showerhead, which is inconvenient for guests who don’t want to wet their hair.• Dining: Dinner (€30 pp) was disappointing. Portions were small, dishes lacked flavor, and service was slow (e.g., a 15-minute wait for wine). Breakfast was abundant but low in quality, with watery fruit and bland cakes.• The service was, unfortunately, the most disheartening part. We booked two nights here months in advance as part of our four-week trip through Sicily, specifically hoping to relax by the pool for two days. On the second day, the weather was poor—something beyond anyone’s control. We politely asked if we could swap our plans: visit a nearby town that day and return to use the pool the following day before leaving. The answer was a firm no, as the facilities were “only for guests”—implying that on our checkout day, we no longer counted as guests. To put this in context: the day before, we had been the only guests at the pool, while large tour groups consistently arrived in the afternoon and left early the next morning. It was clear this was not a matter of practicality but of unwillingness. The owner’s tone and facial expressions felt dismissive and condescending. Some of her remarks included:• “You can book an extra night!” (We had already booked elsewhere.)• “Doesn’t your next hotel have facilities?” (Said in an unnecessarily arrogant way.)• “You’re welcome to use the pool today.” (It was raining heavily with thunderstorms.)• “You’re welcome to stay for lunch.” (In other words, we could continue spending money there, but a small gesture of goodwill wasn’t possible.)When I expressed our disappointment—mentioning that in the Netherlands we are accustomed to a little flexibility to make a guest’s experience as pleasant as possible—she replied, “I’m from Belgium, so I know all about that,” which unfortunately did not match her actions. This was such a small request to accommodate, one that would have cost nothing. The pool was already filled, and we were happy to use our own towels. Please note: we remained calm, spoke politely, and even complimented the beauty of the property. We are quiet, respectful guests who always clean up after ourselves and leave spaces tidy.Of course, no one controls the weather, and the staff were not obligated to grant our request. But the complete lack of empathy was disheartening—especially considering we didn’t pay €350 just for a bed and a hot shower. What saddens us most is that we were so taken by the property’s beauty that we had been seriously considering it as the venue for our wedding next year. Yesterday, we thought we had found our perfect spot and had already started planning. After this unpleasant experience, however, we can no longer consider it. Such a shame. Vecchia Masseria, Direttore generale at Vecchia Masseria, responded to this review Dear dear guest,I will copy and paste the response to your comment made on Booking .com and Google as It has clearly became a Witch Hunt for you and personally I have other think to attend to contrary to you . You can continue to spread lies on own just because you were not given what you expected . You have already made a fool of yourself so let’s call it a day:Dear Guest, WAOUW!!!! It feels that I had a conversation with a totally different person this morning! What about the fact that you said everything was ok but felt disappointed because you could not come back the day after to use our services even if you were staying in another hotel?? Despite you were told that we had the availability for you staying another night.? You even said that you were thinking of our location for your possible wedding before you were told that it was impossible to come back the day after... How on earth could you even consider our location if everything from the room to the dinner and breakfast were bad???? Am I missing anything ? why wanting to come back either??? I was willing once I understood your explanation to welcome you the day after but the attitude you had , threatening us and telling me that you did not like my tone while I as trying to understand the issue was a bit too much. And now this ... all the lies to justify your disappointment on the rules... I will not ask booking.com to cancel your comment as I want everyone to be aware how a young lady can ruin an hotel reputation just because she does not get what she wants... Outstanding! And by the way, the service of the pasta done with the tray is called English service ( service à l Anglaise ) in the Hotellerie and restaurant vocabulary and is the service you will find in every Agriturismo of Italy .. Cheers!

    Great Agrotourism hotel

    rating22 Aug 2025

Beautifully kept hotel, friendly attentive staff. The whole place is kept very clean and tidy. We stayed half board, which is a good idea as it is very remote. There is a 2km rough track from the road to the hotel. The food was pretty good and they accommodated my gluten intolerance well. Everybody sits down the the same meal at 7.30pm which is plentiful and well presented 4 courses. Breakfast options are good and plentiful, although after 4 course meal the night before we struggled to eat breakfast. The hotel is beautiful but is a long drive from anywhere. You definitely need a car. We visited several places but most are a 2 hour drive from the hotel. We had the basic rooms, but they are clean and well equipped. Thank you to the hotel staff for a lovely stay.

    Coeliac-friendly, amazing food and location

    rating07 Aug 2025

Coeliac-friendly! Very safe gf cooking: ask for the lovely Fatima (?) one of the main restaurant staff, she speaks English really well and understands the risks of cross-contamination (eg. she provided butter straight from the kitchen, when I explained that crumbs may have contaminated the main butter in the buffet area).Breakfast includes individually wrapped gf muffins, freshly cooked pancakes (you may need to request them), fresh fruit etc.Set menu is very good value (30 euros) and the food is exceptional. The best we have tasted.Any issues/questions: speak to reception, who will contact the kitchen directly (eg. we were served two slices of watermelon instead of lovely cake as a gf alternative one day, but this didn't happen again after I mentioned it/suggested ice cream would be a better 'treat' for Coeliac children).Location is superb, like a tropical paradise. Rooms ultra-clean. Plenty of sun beds inc spares stacked up by the pool. Table tennis and hot tub.Air con included in price. For any Coeliacs, be assured this was a safe and gf-friendly place. None of our (ultra sensitive/reactive) Coeliac family had any symptoms of gluten contamination. Definitely recommend.

    Botanical Paradise

    rating23 Aug 2024

The Vecchia Masseria is more than just a great location. It feels like a little piece of paradise nestled in the arid hills of Sicily. Its fabulous landscaping and gorgeous views will leave you breathless. It is a noteworthy botanical achievement rare to anywhere on this island. Every angle is accurately designed and enriched with historical artifacts making it ideal for photo opportunities everywhere. The business is run by a young and forward thinking family who cares for their clients' satisfaction in every fine detail. The food is delicious. Enjoy the rich array of sublime antipasti served with a smile and elegance. Every inch of both indoor and outdoor spaces are immaculate and clean to perfection. Make The Vecchia Masseria a priority visit on your trip to Sicily for an unforgettable and authentic experience.
