  Despite the good location, a slight disappointment

  We spent a week at Hotel Splendid in Taormina. Despite all its good aspects, the hotel was a slight disappointment for us. The best thing about the hotel was its central location. A shop and a pizzeria that stays open late were “just around the corner,” as was the town center.Our room was a renovated sea-view room on the fourth floor with a balcony. In this case, the saying “be careful what you wish for, because you might get it” applies—the balcony really is very high, and someone with a fear of heights might not feel comfortable going out there. The view was beautiful.The room was small and really only suitable for sleeping. The mattresses were excellent for sleeping. Soundproofing was poor.The staff were very service-minded. Cleaning could have been better. We found candy wrappers from previous guests on the floor, and dust accumulated in the corners during the week. The bed sheets were not changed even once during the week, although there would have been reason to do so. We only realized on the last day of our stay that we were supposed to request a sheet change ourselves. We also had to stock up a bit on toilet paper.If you enjoy hotel breakfasts, this might not be the place for you—unless you specifically want sweet pastries. To our disappointment, the breakfast was really poor: dry bread, eggs that seemed to have been boiled a couple of days earlier, thick and dry bacon… the salami was sometimes already gray in color and tasted spoiled. We have had much, much better breakfasts in three-star hotels. We expected something better from a four-star hotel.

  So-so hotel overall and certainly did not feel like a 4-star experience. The location is nice, and the views are beautiful. However, Max at the front desk was extremely rude and unhelpful during our stay. The younger staff members at breakfast and dinner were kind and friendly.Our room had several maintenance issues, including ants, a sink that did not drain properly, and a shower head that did not function well. There was also a persistent sewer smell coming from either the sink or bidet throughout our five-day stay.Breakfast offered a wide selection and a lovely view, which we appreciated. One concerning incident occurred when the cleaning staff entered our room without knocking while our children were resting, which felt like a violation of privacy.Overall, there are many other hotel options in the area that I would consider before staying here again.

  Great location with some negatives

  Great location and lovely view from our hotel room. The staff were very friendly and were happy to help. The restaurant was surprisingly good with a wide menu.However, there was a disgusting smell in our bathroom and although we complained they seemed unable to eradicate it despite spraying with perfume.The hotel breakfast was disappointing. As far as fruit was concerned, there was a choice of an apple, a satsuma or a kiwi. A good choice of croissant, bread, cheese and ham. There was a vast array of cakes, mainly chocolate covered in cream. I didn't actually see anyone eating these cakes so i have no idea what they did with these at the end of the day. So, if you want to be near the centre and aren't bothered about breakfast then this is the hotel for you. Just make sure you are not in room 408.

  The positive is its location. The pool is small with beds very close together and limited in number (we are not beach people hence choosing the Splendid). As I’m a very early riser and like the morning sun there was no problem getting a bed until the weekend when half the beds had paper “reserved” sign on them. Next we were inundated by locals who took over the pool, ate food and drinks in the pool and basically acted as though they owned the place. We were under the impression from the hotel that there was an option to eat in the restaurant at lunch - not true. The offerings at the pool bar were basically the left overs from the restaurant the night before. When we asked what else there was we were met with a shrug by the male attendant (slightly podgy and miserable) yet when the locals descended they received all sorts of offerings which we were certainly not made available to the paying guests. The breakfast was good if all you require is cake, cake and cake. I’ve never seen so many sweets - it was like being in a patisserie. No fresh fruit whatsoever unless you wanted underripe apples. We were so desperate for fruit we took to taking some desserts to have with our yoghurt which had strawberries on them (oh the yoghurt machine, that was something else). I wouldn’t mind but there’s a fruit and veg seller literally on the corner. Even 2/3 star have prepared fruit such as melon, berries etc. but not here. The room was basic, shower cubicle minute. Poor silicone around the edge and as for the laminate flooring I can only assume it was laid by a one-armed blind person with a spoon. Awful. We asked for a sea view which we had but the balconies are tiny. One has to get up and go back into the room for the other get out/in. We tried the bar one night. What a soulless place. We had one drink and left and this was the height of the season. It has so much potential but not used. For the price it was not value for money. Looks can be, and are, deceiving.

  Great Stay with a Stunning View in Taormina

  Amazing hotel with a stunning view. I stayed here for a couple of days on a business trip in the beautiful city of Taormina. The hotel is in an excellent location, just steps from the city center. The staff were incredible, and the restaurant was very good.As a small suggestion for a four-star hotel, having conditioner available in the shower would be appreciated, and the restaurant could be warmer during the winter months. Thank you!
