Fine line between charming vs fixer-upper

    rating11 Nov 2025

The hotel has a central location between the upper and lower towns of Ragusa. The hotel reception/porter staff (they do multiple jobs) were friendly and exceptionally helpful—especially staff member Christian, at the front desk. The hotel building has charm, with a genteel antique atmosphere. The breakfast buffet is basic—no cooked items. It was pleasantly presented in a charming dining room. The hotel has no elevator. It was 38 steps from the lobby and my room. Even more importantly, rooms are in need of repair. In my friends’ first room, the sink was unusable. In the room they were then moved to, the shower hose had holes, plural, so it sprayed water everywhere. I think this hotel has potential, even without an elevator, but under current circumstances, I cannot recommend it.

    Charming traditional hotel

    rating25 Oct 2025

While the hotel was charming and picturesque, the fact that there was no lift/elevator was a bit of a problem after climbing them for a couple of days. Luckily at the front desk Alberto was able to fetch our luggage and was super helpful. Our friends had problems with a leaky shower and there were no tissues in the bathroom! Breakfast was good although a bit limited. Breakfast room was very charming, back garden and pool were beautiful. If walking up stairs is not a problem, and you like the location, this hotel may be for you!

Understated chic design with calming atmosphere

    rating06 Aug 2024

A beautiful character boutique hotel set in peaceful secluded gardens with pool. The understated chic design contrasts well with the historic structure and we found a wonderful calming atmosphere despite its central town and road-side location. The staff were super friendly and professional. Secure car parking is short five minute walk. I could have stayed there forever! Beware, there are steps and no lift. Antonio Guest Relation, Altro at Villa del Lauro, responded to this review Dear F8387NBrichardh,Thank you sincerely for your kind and thoughtful review. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed the understated elegance and peaceful atmosphere of Villa del Lauro — this harmony between historic charm and contemporary design is exactly what we aim to offer our guests. We’re especially pleased to know that our secluded gardens and pool contributed to your sense of calm, even in our central location within Ragusa. It's a pleasure to hear that our team’s friendliness and professionalism left a positive impression — your appreciation means a great deal to us.As you rightly mentioned, the building’s noble history comes with architectural features such as staircases and the absence of a lift. Being a heritage property, we strive to preserve its authenticity while doing our best to accommodate guests’ needs, including assistance with luggage and recommendations for rooms that best suit mobility needs. We're also glad the secure parking nearby made your arrival more convenient — a small walk that leads into a timeless Sicilian retreat. We hope to welcome you back again soon. On your next visit, you might enjoy exploring the charming alleyways of Ragusa Ibla, or perhaps take a scenic drive to Donnafugata Castle, just a short distance away and full of regional history and beauty.Warmest regards,Antonio LabrunaGuest Relation Manager

Good location but not my idea of a boutique hotel.

    rating07 Oct 2023

First I will say that the staff here were excellent, polite and helpful. However, the hotel is on three levels and there is no lift. The breakfast was good but continental only. There is no restaurant and no bar, though the staff will happily serve drinks in the small lounge. The WiFi is not up to the job.The city of Ragusa is on two hills and the main street one long hill. To get to any restaurant is at least 10 minutes fast walk up hill, and 20 minutes is more realistic. The hotel is on a steep narrow street and the only parking is on-street and limited. You need to be fit! Position wise it is well positioned for access to the town or to Ragusa Ibla, the older part. Matteo Guest Relation, Marketing at Villa del Lauro, responded to this review Dear guest, thank you for your review. We are happy to hear that you've appreciated our professional staff, however, we apologize if your stay has not been good. Our hotel is located in the city center of the upper part of Ragusa, and all the restaurants are 10 minutes away from us. Talking about the steep narrow street, that is not our fault if the city center is characterised by these streets, and it could be comprehensible. Our hotel is an historic residence and it is impossible to build a lift INSIDE. Hoping that you can understand. Thank you again for your time. Best regards, Giuseppe

    Dishonest and rude receptionist

    rating21 Aug 2023

Attention : the receptionist is a big liar !The guy working at the reception is a disaster. He is dishonest and tried to charge twice the normal price for taxi that we ordered which was already over priced (130€ for 30 minutes ride vs. 60€ normal price) against huge commission from taxi company. Furthermore, they tried to charge the minibar which was free. The receptionist showed unwillingness when we left the luggage at the reception upon check out, even though it was to store for just a few hours, time to visit the old town. He put lots of pressure for check out time even it was about 11:10 and wanted to ask us to pay extra. There was no wifi nor air conditioning in the room which was literally a small cave. No fresh air in the room and impossible to get hot water for baby in the room. In addition, they forgot to put baby cot and charged additional fee for it (first time in Sicily during our 2-week trip). The only positive thing is that the servers for breakfast were very nice and helpful and there is a nice pool. It’s a pity that it’s ruined by the receptionists who were unfriendly, unhelpful and rude. The hotel’s management should alert the receptionists and give them a proper training. Matteo Guest Relation, Marketing at Villa del Lauro, responded to this review Good evening, We want to start by saying that we can’t let you define our staff as "dishonest staff" because we are part of a very respectable company, and throughout the years, we have received a lot of congratulations for our daily service. The most important thing to say is that you reserved a taxi twice during your stay, then, you also cancelled this service twice again. Clearly, this was not correct from your part towards the taxi drivers. You decided to book for a third time a taxi service, our staff has answered to your questions about the cost of taxi service telling you that the driver was coming from Modica to Ragusa and then had to go from Ragusa to your final destination. Meanwhile you reserved another taxi who came 20 minutes before your departure, he was very upset because he was not warned by you that you were leaving the hotel with the third taxi driver. Talking about the items of luggage, you left your bags for an entire day from your check-out until 8 pm. Normally, this is a paid service but our staff has offered you this possibility without paying an extra cost. Despite all, you criticized our work and our behaviour.Last but not least, your room is a very elegant room that has always been appreciated by our guests. The “cave” as defined by you, is something characteristic of the city center of Ragusa. Kindly
