Interesting tour spolt by poor accomodation

    rating24 May 2026

Over the years my wife and I have enjoyed 10+ holidays with Riviera Holidays both River Cruises and escorted tours. All have been excellent and we have often recommended them to our friends. However, having just returned from a tour of Tuscany which was beautiful, I’m afraid staying at the Palazzo San Lorenzo wasn’t.The hotel was in a small town with little going on outside the hotel. Our room was comfortable but lacking any tea or coffee station which was made worse by there being no room service available. The lounge/bar area was closed until early evening but no staff. If you wanted a pre dinner or after-dinner drink you had to ask at reception. Not what you expected in a 4* hotel. On a particularly very wet day (our “free time”) we had to go out for a hot drink and some lunch as nothing was available at the hotel. This wet day also exposed the fact there was not enough comfortable seating in the hotel for a group of our size and with the bar area closed staying in your room or sitting in a now empty breakfast romm were the only options. The food in the evening was of below averge, the main meal being served on cold plates, the provided seasonal greens was mainly lettuce and no thought was given to presentation. Finally, surely painters and decorators should be working before the ‘season’ starts? Not here! It caused the breakfast to be set out in two rooms, one for food and one for seating. People were constantly walking between rooms carrying hot beverages.Incidentally on a positive note, all the staff were helpful and friendly especially the very young waiters serving our dinners. If it not been for the lovely group of friends we made my story would have been much worse!

This is not a four star hotel... they need to up their game

    rating14 May 2026

I can echo the review made by Pat D... pretty sure I was on the same tour group! This hotel should really be removed from the Riviera brochure as it does not enhance their reputation as a good quality tour operator. The main gripe was the food - a different menu for Riviera than the a la carte shown at the front of the hotel. The food was very poor - served on cold plates, lukewarm, skimpy portions, and service slow (not enough waiting staff - or experienced waiting staff - the two young lads that were on duty did their best). Breakfast was adequate however. Rooms were a good size but only four hangers in a half size wardrobe for two of us and no tea or coffee provided. No bar open during the day and no coffee station anywhere in the hotel. If you want a cup of coffee at 3 30pm you will have to go out! Take a travel kettle. Cleaning was a bit skimpy too, glasses taken to the room from the restaurant table to finish our wine were left all week. However, bed comfortable and clean towels available on request. The pool area looked nice but the weather wasn't up to using that - however if you did you would find yourself next to a closed bar (bar opening time 5 30pm. No slow sipping of cocktails around this pool! )Bottom line this is not a four star hotel. However good location if you are touring around the Tuscan towns and there are other restaurants available in the town for evening dining.

Disappointing and underwhelming experience which somewhat marred the trip.

On a Riviera tour of 36 guests. The location was remote, but beautifully positioned iro the town's history and heritage. However the hotel did not live up to it's 4* rating. There was no atmosphere. It appeared to be undergoing renovations whilst we were there ie the breakfast room was shut down for repainting. The bar was reluctantly opened after several requests from our party. The lounge could not cater for our group of 36 on a rain day. The hotel appeared to be on skeleton staff, with no room service provided and a very limited beverage choice ie. no low calorie or zero drinks. The rooms, although a good size and well cleaned had no coffee station, expected in a 4* hotel. The bath was a depth trap with no shower mat to prevent slipping. The staff that were on duty always went out of their way to help. Finally, the food was a huge disappointment. We had to be in the dining room by 19:30 sharp, yet our first course only ever arrived by 20:15 in most cases, with the final course served well after 21:15. Why?Small portions, and what appeared to be processed meat, until the last 2 days after many complaints from the group, when the portions improved. The desserts were a delight. We paid 4* prices without a 4* experience.

highly recommended hotel—comfortable, spotless, and with outstanding service that made us feel very well looked after.

We had a wonderful stay and truly enjoyed every aspect of this hotel. We had 2 rooms, one for a couple with a 1 year baby. The rooms were spacious, beautifully decorated, and impeccably clean, creating a very comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. The bed was incredibly comfortable, ensuring a great night’s sleep. The staff were exceptionally helpful and welcoming, both at reception and especially in the breakfast room, where the service was attentive and genuinely warm. Breakfast was a real pleasure thanks to their care and friendliness.

A taste of luxury in Colle di Val d'Elsa

    rating16 Nov 2025

Located just inside the town walls, this is a luxurious place to stay. Our room was quite large, with a big bathroom, and felt quite modern despite being in such an historic town. It was scrupulously clean, and very quiet at night. There is a bar - open limited hours - and a large lounge. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant which gave us one of the best meals of our holiday. It appears to be quite formal, but the staff were so friendly we were immediately at ease. The food and wine were excellent - local wine, Tuscan food but with a lighter, perhaps more modern spin. Breakfast is a huge affair and there is a lot of choice, all of it fresh and delicious. It is a buffet, served in an elegant high-ceilinged room, and there is plenty of space for everyone. Reception staff were friendly and helpful. We had a pre-booked taxi to take us to our next destination, and they knew exactly what was happening with this when there was a minor hiccup with it.
