Fantastic week at Hotel Heron, Jesolo, plus hints for how to get to Venice

    rating13 Aug 2023

This is a lovely hotel right in the middle of the seafront. We had a family room which was small but had a double bed and bunk beds for the children, a small balcony with a sea view and a shower room/toilet en suite. We stayed half board, so had breakfast at the hotel which was a standard continental buffet plus bacon and eggs. All was very tasty and the dining room was never too busy across the whole of the week. The staff were friendly and polite, though they did not speak English as well as they did German - this is probably down to the resort being very popular with German tourists and less so with English visitors. All the staff tried very hard to answer queries and the cleaning staff were particularly attentive- our room was cleaned tidied every day in the half hour we were at breakfast.Hotel facilities are good - the pool was quiet and we had enough sunbeds each day. Half the pool was shallow enough for our children to swim in without getting out of their depth, and there is a toddler pool available too.The hotel has it's own section of the beach and you get a free pass for two sunbeds there. We only went once - the children preferred the pool - but the beach is clean and not too busy. The shore slopes gently so you could paddle quite a way out before it gets too deep.Only downside was the bar was always closed, which was disappointing as we would have liked to have a drink there in the evening before the children's bedtime and we were unable to get a snack at lunchtime.Other hints:We ate out each evening but after the first day or so decided our favourite restaurant was the Hotel Verdi 'Ristopub', which had delicious food and was well-priced. It was about 5 minutes walk along the main drag - turn left out of the hotel and then second left onto the main street. Pizzas and Lasagne was lovely and cheaper than the UK, the chips are gorgeous and the burgers are immense! Drinks were comparable to the UK, but if you want a beer get a large Hoegaarden - it's a bit pricier but it's more than a pint and comes in a huge glass, so it's better value.Ice-cream cones from any of the icecream stands along the main drag were 2 Euros and were delicious - the children chose a different flavour every night for dessert. We went to Venice midweek - it's a bit of a faff so here's how to do it:1. Go to a Tabacchi to buy your tickets - they have a big T sign outside. Our return tickets cost 25 Euros.2. Get a service bus from the yellow bus stop on the next road back from the main street. Make a note of the stop number so you know where to get off again on the way back. Remember the traffic drives on the right so you need to be on the far side of the road for the bus going right to left!3. When you get on validate your ticket at the little screen attached to the vertical handholds - there a couple in the bus. You dont need to get on at the front! Our bus was very busy at 9.30/10.00 ish, so go earlier if you can.4. Get off at the waterbus terminal at Punto Sabbioni. Your bus ticket is also valid for the waterbus so don't queue for another ticket. You need queue B to the right of the ticket office.5. Get on the boat and relax for a bit. There's no toilet and the journey takes 30mins so go before you get on! Also no refreshments so you might want a drink with you.6. The boat drops off about 100 yards from Piazza San Marco near a big marble church. Go left along the quayside and over a couple of bridges. Make a note where you got off, you get back on here later.7. Enjoy your day around Venice - it's a busy place and restaurants tend to be on side streets. Signs back to San Marco are usually just above the shopfronts if you get lost.8. Going home is the same in reverse - back to the church and through the turnstile to get on the boat - again you need to use your ticket on the validation thingy to get through.9. Back at Punto Sabbioni get on the Number 5 bus from the covered bus stop. Remember the bus stop you got on at this morning - press the button to get off there again! Don't forget; the bus won't stop until you request it and the bus station is 3500m from the hotel!

    I highly recommend

Total satisfaction with everything. Although the room was tighter for 3 adults, it was otherwise small and cozy with a beautiful view of the sea. As for the service during the half-board period, there is nothing to complain about. We personally had the main waiter, Mr. Etteri Ector, very pleasant, fast and helpful. I have probably never experienced such service anywhere, that he devoted himself to us, as he did. The rest of the service was also flawless. I would also like to praise the receptionist for her very pleasant behavior and especially her help with parking, when there was no space at the hotel and the lady advised and asked a colleague to guide us personally directly to the other parking lot. I have never experienced such willingness and helpfulness of the entire staff and I will definitely come back here :)

    Staff is very friendly

We stayed here for a week and enjoyed every minute. The hotel is right at the beach, with it own sun beds. :) For the first 2 rows you have to pay a little extra but it's worth it, if you don't it's still good the other 15 rows. :)Rooms are tidy, but it should be renovate ,change the furnitures maybe when they got the chance.Food was good,i really liked the menu system here.It is in a good location, just a minute walk from the main street if you want to shop or find some good restaurant/pizza place. But if you just want a nice walk at the beach you are at the right place. And lastly the staff. They were not just friendly but grate, when we asked about places where should we ate, or just find some nice gift they helped us with unique ideas or offered restaurant, tourist program we should try.Thank you once again.
