  When quaint becomes dilapidated

  Stayed at the Santa Marina at the end of September 2026. The hotel is about 10 minutes walk from San Marco in one direction or Rialto in another direction. The hotel does not have its own canal dock, but the nearest canal is only about 50 metres from the back of the hotel.There is a small supermarket across the square in front of the hotel.The first impression of the interior of the hotel was nice. Lots of period woodwork and Murano chandeliers, if a little faded. The hotel consists of adjoining buildings linked by the breakfast room which is a courtyard that has been roofed over. The better rooms in one of the buildings are served by an elevator. We had booked a junior suite through booking.com and were allocated a room in the other building which did not have an elevator. We had heavy luggage which was difficult to haul up steep stairs. The stairs would have been impassable to someone with reduced mobility.The junior suite was large and airy and the bed was comfortable. The sitting area contained two armchairs that would open out into single beds. Other than a small table there was no other furniture in this room. It was not a place one would want to sit in for very long.On closer inspection the room and the bathroom was shabby.The toilet was stained, and water was running continuously from the cistern. The plugs in the basin and bath did not work. The jacuzzi bath did not work. When we raised this with reception, the male receptionist dismissed our complaint.The water temperature of the shower was either cold, or scalding hot and difficult to adjust.Most of the power outlets were of an obsolete inline 3 pin type common in Italy but not elsewhere. A phone charger or european adaptor would only fit loosely into this type of socket which made charging a random exercise. There were no usb sockets anywhere.My major complaint about this hotel concerns the attitude of the 2 male reception staff that we encountered who seemed to work on the afternoons and evenings. One of them was best described as correct but cold, the other was simply rude. The second should never work in a customer facing role.The 2 ladies that worked on reception mainly in the mornings were the complete opposite, friendly and helpful.The breakfast was very good for my tastes with many Italian swet and savoury dishes, but judging by the comments we heard from Australian and American guests it was not to their taste.I would not stay again.

  This hotel was amazing, and the staff were fantastic. My partner and I had been staying at another hotel nearby, but I'd accidentally booked the wrong dates and we were short one night. So we ended up booking somewhere last minute, and we were already having a rough day, having to pack everything up and move.The moment we arrived, though, everything turned around. The staff were incredibly helpful, and even though our room wasn't ready yet (we'd booked and shown up barely five minutes later!), they upgraded us to another room so we could head up, take a shower, and reset after all the chaos.The room was gorgeous, and the bathtub was exactly what I needed to relax after such a stressful day. Honestly, the rooms look even better in person than in the photos. A special thank you to the reception staff, who went above and beyond to make our last day in Venice so special. I'd absolutely recommend this place to anyone.

  Comfortable old world Venetian hotel

  My husband grew up in the neighborhood so we have been staying at Hotel Santa Marina for many years. We got a suite this time and my son and his wife stayed in a junior suite. We always go back because it’s a comfortable, old world Venetian hotel. Staff are helpful. Feels like home.

  Terrible customer service phone call.

  I just had an incredibly terrible conversation with a representative of the hotel. I called internationally to see if I could have my call connected to my parents’ room. He explained their privacy policy which I understand. I stated that I was not asking for their room number or anything, just didn’t know if there was a way that he, as operator according to the phone call, could transfer my call. He stated no and I thanked him. My husband suggested that maybe what I should have asked is if I can leave a message for them. I called back. It was the same gentleman. I stated that I had just called and I was wondering if there was an option to leave a message. He repeated the privacy info again. I said I don’t need any information. I have their names, I am not asking their names, I just wanted to see if leaving them a message for them to call their daughter was possible. He rudely said with a grunt I don’t understand why you don’t have WhatsApp to leave a message, it’s 2025 (which actually it’s 2026) - I started to say, their phone location and everything turned off and they were supposed to be there three hours ago, but I got up to turned off, and he grunted again mumbled something that sounded like ridiculous and hung up/slammed the phone down on me. I could hear the hang up, not a disconnect. I hope my elderly parents who have had the worst travel experience so far with everything set up for them cancelling and them having to find their own way in a foreign country, actually found their own way, and that when they get to this hotel they were very excited about, that their customer service experience is better than what I just encountered. ??
