A very nice, secluded spa resort

    rating16 Sept 2026

This place is rather lovely. Perched 600m up the mountain from Hakone it’s set in woodlands and has a beautiful rock pool outdoor onsen next to a waterfall. Each room has its own tub on the balcony which is filled by endless hot spring water. The staff are lovely, yukatas are provided and the atmosphere is incredibly peaceful and relaxing with lovely garden walks. My only criticism is that dinner is served cafeteria style. The food is very good but standing in line with people carrying their own trays is deeply uncivilised and is reminiscent of a motorway service station. But this is a minor detraction. Overall it’s a lovely place.

They need to review their rating.

You can’t beat the location, also we had a beautiful teppanyaki meal. However, the rooms are fairly basic (think 3 star) and although there is effort from many staff members, staff in other areas of the hotel don’t come nowhere near a 5 star standard. When we were there lots of families occupied most areas of the hotel which made breakfast a challenge.

    Hakone’s Oasis of luxury

Such a beautiful hotel with amazing scenery. The staff are exceptional and really attentive to your every needs. The hot spring baths are amazing with all the amenities to pamper yourself at no extra cost. The food is also fantastic with an array of Japanese and international dishes to choose from. We alsoIndulged into a 6-course chef speciality menu which was excellent. There’s something for everyone, a water park for kids, spa treatments, massage rooms, an enchanting outdoor garden with three waterfalls, a bar & lounge and the three hot spring locations.Would highly recommend

A beautiful place in nature, but lacking the quality of a 5 star hotel

    rating15 Jul 2026

Hakone Kowakien Tenyu wasn't quite the experience we had hoped for. We were expecting a more relaxed, intimate atmosphere with a strong focus on quality, but instead the hotel felt more like a large-scale tourist destination. The environment and landscape of the hotel are wonderful, as it is sourrended by big mountains and built in the middle of the forest. The Onsen experience provided by the hotel is unique and the staff is very helpful and speak good English, which helps a lot with communication. The hotel offers others other amenities, like a water park and free ice creams, which is nice for kids. There is also an arcade, or so it is called, but this is more of a mix of games (shooting and hoops), appropriate for younger kids. The breakfast is quite diverse, with several options between Japanese and Eastern food items. I would have preferred quality over quantity though. The Kaiseki dinner should have been one of our trip's main highlights, but it completely missed the mark. The appetisers were of substandard quality and the fish plates were overcooked (lobster and squid were rubbery). The meat dishes kind of saved the meal, but for the expensive amount paid this was really disappointing.Another aspect that needs to be revised is the power adaptors provided. The room has no USB plugs and providing only an adaptor for a family of four is obviously a challenge.

    A Good Stay in Hakone

    rating07 Jul 2026

Beautiful location with great views. Very tourists and the buffet breakfast and dinners are ok. Rooms are a mix of modern and traditional with private onsens. My husband and I have tattoos so we couldn’t use the public ones. Entertainment nightly and free drinks which is a plus. Close to Lake Ashi.
