Poor service, amenities non existent, staff unhelpful, not convenient location, rooms small in poor condition.

    rating26 Mar 2026

Very disappointing in so many ways. Rooms in bad repair. No restaurant services besides breakfast which was good but badly laid out and difficult to navigate. Safe buffet for 4 days. No variety. Snacks they offers are pathetic. No one speaks English or is interested in helping. Rooms are tiny and minimalist. No place to put toiletry bag in bathroom. Have to drag suitcases up/down stairs to get in/out. Late checkout available for one additional hour for 1,000 yen. No restaurants or convenience stores nearby by in a country where there is a restaurant or convenience store every 2 feet. Did not respect guests needs or requests. Would recommend you run from this hotel.

    Cramped and crowded.

    rating04 Nov 2025

After exceptional hotel and ryokan service and facilities throughout our journey in Japan, The Oriental Hotel was quite disappointing. The service was good enough but lacked the warmth and care we have experienced so far. The hotel was very crowded and checkin , and any other enquiries took a while. Breakfast was limited and the only gluten free options were boiled eggs and yoghurt. The dining room was very busy and not a relaxing or pleasant experience at all. The rooms and bathroom were so small and the awkward layout and lack of shelves or cupboards made it feel very cramped and unpleasant to hang out. On the plus side, everything was spotlessly clean, quiet and super comfy beds. We rented brand new electric bikes from the hotel too.

Please be aware of their extra charges when travelling with a child

    rating26 Aug 2025

This was my second time in this hotel. I have stayed last year and we had nice time staying only for one night, based on this we have decided to stay four night this time but it was not pleasant experience this time. The hotel service went down big time. We have booked and paid for 2 adulds and 1 child but during check I was informed that the child sleeping in separate bed has to paid additional charges for the bed. It would be fine with me unless I didn't already paid higher bedroom price. It would have been much cheaper to pay for 2 adults in the same bedroom and paid additional charges for the child upon check in. This was also confirm by front desk. I did not find this hotel to be family friendly. They could have found a solution but they did not care and only keep fishing on extra charges.

Great hotel - small details need work

    rating08 Aug 2025

This hotel would have been an easy 5 star for me. The hotel is located in a rather residential area and blends in very well. You are immediately greeted with a beautiful lobby and a lovely small garden within the lobby. Beautiful traditional design luxury and modern. Staff was extremely friendly. The breakfast was outstanding! Great selection of traditional and western offerings. The best salads I have ever had - still dreaming of the classic carrot dressing. Really highlighting local food and ingredients. Phenomenal! After a long day they offer beverages (even local wine) and small snacks like lotus cookies. The hotel has a laundry room which is also very handy for traveling. So why only 4 stars? I opted for a Japanese room which is very stylish and just a cool experience BUT - even though the rooms were spacious and comfortable - I was disgusted by all the spots, stains and flaws on the white wall. Really makes you feel unwelcome especially when you literally sleep on the couch. This is just very unhygienic and leaves a bad feeling - even though this could have been an easy 5 stars.

    Travelers beware !

    rating13 Apr 2025

This is a terrible choice for any tourist or family coming to Kyoto. Incredibly expensive and the rooms are tiny. The Japanese rooms have tatami mats of poor quality (not proper mattresses, it’s the folding type!). We wanted to shorten our stay but the booking was not refundable so we ended up locked in for 5 days. Be prepared to shower in plastic bathtub for over ¥55k per night, it’s insane. It’s a bad example of how the tourism has negatively affected quality in Kyoto. Staff at reception hardly speaks any English so communication is a real problem too. We travel to Japan a lot but this is the worst stay we had in Japan ever.
