  We stayed at Hotel Metropolitan Nagano during our visit to Nagano and, apart from its convenient location next to the station, there was very little to impress.The room felt tired, dated, and in need of significant refurbishment. The standard room consisted of twin beds, and the overall atmosphere was reminiscent of a business hotel from decades ago. The room itself was small and lacked any sense of comfort or character.The bathroom was particularly disappointing. It was extremely cramped and claustrophobic, with an old-fashioned plastic shower curtain rail that made it feel even more outdated. Even the bathroom door felt unusually light and flimsy, giving a rather cheap impression and doing little to inspire confidence in the overall quality of the room. It was functional, but certainly not a bathroom one would expect from a hotel carrying the Metropolitan name.To make matters worse, the view from the room was directly over the roof of a neighbouring building, offering no outlook whatsoever. Combined with the small room, dated furnishings, and uninspiring surroundings, the experience felt rather depressing.We chose not to have breakfast, so cannot comment on the food. Overall, this hotel may suit travellers who simply need a place to sleep next to the station, but in our opinion it offers poor value for money and falls well short of modern hotel standards.The good news is that the room did successfully transport us back to the 1990s. Unfortunately, unlike time travel, there was no return ticket included in the rate.

  Comfortable hotel in excellent proximity to the train station.Courteous and professional staff.A good base for access to the local area. We were able to walk to the major attractions.Daily servicing of the room replenished all ammenities.

  Cost Cutting at the Expense of Guest Comfort

  I stayed here at the end of May when temperatures were in the 30°C range and the air was quite dry.I was surprised that the hotel did not provide any lotion, which I would expect given the climate. I was also disappointed by the air conditioning in the room, which was not strong enough to keep the room comfortably cool.Based on these experiences, it felt like cost reduction was prioritized over guest comfort. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this hotel.

  Hotel is located at a convenient location. It is close to Nagano station and there’s an option to take the sheltered path from Midori mall to reach the hotel. From Midori mall, there’s also a linkway (not sheltered) that goes to the Don Quijote (Donki) Nagano Ekimae Store. It’s not crowded like the Tokyo stores and although it’s not a mega store, I feel the variety is sufficient.We stayed 2 nights at the hotel. We have previously arranged to have our luggages delivered from Kyoto on 15 Apr to reach the hotel on 16 Apr. The luggages arrived before we check-in and we were impressed the hotel staff helped to bring it to the room when we arrived. Although the hotel is not very new, the room was clean and well maintained. Basic amenities such as toothbrush/ toothpaste, comb, shavers, shower caps were provided, that was similar to their Tokyo branch which we also stayed at during this trip. We went on the Kamikochi hike and one reason we chose this hotel is because 1 of the pick-up point is right at the hotel lobby which is very convenient. You can see it on the left once you step out of the hotel’s main entrance.Breakfast was also very good with a wide variety of food. What struck me was the variety of sauces that were available, also the toppings available for the yogurt such as jellies and jams. Apple juice that is one of Nagano’s speciality was also available in a bottle. The mini swiss rolls were nice too. There is also a live egg station present. However, it was not available closer to the end time of the breakfast buffet.   Okay but rooms for improvement

  An enjoyable stay but rooms for improvement noted during my 2 nights stay.Location---------Great location just next to the station and easily accessible with the need to climb stairs or walk in the rain to get there.Room-------Room is spacious but a little dated. The bed is hard. I mean really hard. It was not great to sleep in. I have stayed in JR hotel chain around Japan and this is the most uncomfortable bed I have slept in.Shower is great. Water pressure is excellent and temperature is consistent throughout the shower, however the tap does not have hot water and the water is too cold to wash up in the morning.
