  A Belated Review for a Truly Excellent Stay

  Although we stayed here back in February 2026, we realized we never got around to writing a review—better late than never!We had a wonderful stay at Mercure Nagano Matsushiro Resort & Spa. The room was spacious, comfortable, and very well maintained, making it a great place to relax after a day of exploring Nagano.Breakfast offered a wide variety of delicious Japanese and Western dishes, and the lounge access was an excellent benefit with a pleasant atmosphere and quality refreshments.The service throughout our stay was warm and professional. We would especially like to thank Ms. Tomomi, who patiently corresponded with us before our arrival. She provided detailed instructions on how to get to the hotel, answered all of our questions promptly, and thoughtfully prepared our rooms according to our family’s needs. Her exceptional hospitality made us feel welcomed even before we checked in.Thank you to Ms. Tomomi and the entire team for making our stay such an enjoyable one.   The Mercure hotel is part of a larger chain of hotels, the foyer is large and impressive. The staff are professional but not that friendly, the rooms are large and clean but are very out of date & could do with a little TLC.   The Views Are the Highlight

  This is a big hotel that has seen better days. Everything is worn and dated, but clean. However, the views of the mountains are amazing. The wifi was is terrible in the evening.There was a free happy hour until 6pm, and it was packed with groups from tour buses . There is a hotel buffet restaurant for dinner, but most people we saw walked to a nearby supermarket or convenience store and bought take away meals, that they warmed in the microwave oven supplied in the hotel lobby area. We were told the nearest restaurants were a 20 minute walk away. Our room was large by Japanese standards. There was also an on-site onsen that many people used. Breakfast was good but a bit of a crowd frenzy. Try to get there early.   Decent price but needs major refresh.

  This was my first time visiting this hotel near Nagano. It turns out to be fairly far from the main train station about 30 minutes on a bus. Makes it a little inconvenient for seeing things. One thing you notice about the hotel once you get here is that it has seen better days. It is in dire need of a refresh. It reminds me of motels from the '80s back in North America. Everything from the elevator to the carpets to the beds to the TVs and coaches in the room are all old. They work but they're old. The TV had like 10 channels all in Japanese and no internet based channels like most hotels do now no Netflix no YouTube access. I think many people would use the spa that they have here it's just not something I'm into. I ended up booking this hotel because all the other ones that were closer to the action were sold out when I booked and this hotel actually is quite large. There are a couple positive things though. The price is very good. If you include breakfast and dinner to your rate it's still very cheap. Also my room is very big especially for Japan. I didn't expect much from the buffet dinner but it was actually quite good with a huge selection. Unfortunately I don't find the bed comfortable or the pillows as I think the pillows have some kind of special thing for your neck which makes it uncomfortable for some. So I guess in the end you get what you pay for. If you're on a budget and you don't mind some distance from the action then it might be an okay place for you. For me I value quality sleep so an uncomfortable bed isn't good for me so I probably would not visit again. This is also nothing to do with it but if interested I was the only Westerner at the hotel that I could see.   Good and Bad

  Going to give a pretty honest review:The Good: The food here is fantastic. Enjoyed both the breakfast and the dinner and it was delicious with a ton of options. You can't go wrong with the food, and it was also pretty awesome that they had two separate cocktail hours for the guests in which you could get drinks and light snacks.The bad: First, the location is pretty far away from the train station. Utilized a taxi which was about 30 minutes away, but did not love the location, but I chose it so can't complain too much. Second, the rooms and hotel overall need renovated. The place is not very nice and there is a pretty bad stench to the hotel. Just that old musty smell. Definitely needs a facelift, as I would never stay here again. Third, maybe I should have done more research, but the onsen looked more like a pool and was the main reason we booked it, but was more your traditional onsen that is separated. It's our own fault for thinking that, but was very disappointing. Finally, the staff wasn't real accommodating.
