    Lovely and Relaxing Stay

    Where to begin....Our stay at the Hotel Monterey was exceptional! Staff was friendly, check-in and check-out ran smooth and fast. I do love the room was quite spacious, though I think I accidentally reserved the larger room as we were placed on the top floor with a bathtub overlooking the beach and open sea. This was the largest room of the 3 hotels we stayed at while in Okinawa.Location is ok. Took a little more than an hour from Naha airport to get there at 8pm. Onno is kind of a small town, and there were a lot of restaurants close by that you can walk to. But keep in mind that you need to make a reservation with most restaurants as we found out the hard way. The main street is probably a 5 minutes walk from the hotel lobby. Transportation...RENT A CAR! The public bus is kind of iffy, as we waited for 30+ minutes for 120 to arrive but it never did even though the posted schedule said it should have. Opted for taxi using Uber instead. But Onno is in a kind of remote location so evening rides was a challenge. We went to Cape Manzamo and were "kicked out" after closing hours. I mean we couldn't stay on the grounds, they were closing the gates to the parking lot so they asked us to leave. 5+ tries to get a ride via Uber and Didi (Chinese ride hailing app) yielded nothing so we had to walk 1km to the main street and we luckily got a cab driving by within 10 minutes.Breakfast buffet was awesome. They provide takeout boxes should we need to bring food back to someone who opted to stay in the room. Very thoughtful! But what I didn't understand was why the Tea House in the lobby would not allow us to bring the food back to our room. Had ordered a spaghetti for lunch for our daughter and she was clearly asleep in the stroller...the staff can see that. After my wife and I finished our meals we asked if we could pack it up to go, and was told no. Asked if we can bring the bowl up to our room, no. So it was a head scratcher that one restaurant allowed take out while another refused to help.Hotel grounds were great, though you will need a slipper for the beach as there are a lot of shells, stones, and corals along the waterline. And its a great hotel for a family because they provided slippers for the kids, and offer free use of digging tools on the beach. We only stayed two nights so we didn't get a chance to see the pool.Have to give a special shout out to the caring staff at the Hotel Monterey. We forgot to pack our daughter's bath towel when we switched to the Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island. After our call, they called back to tell us house keeping did find it and offered to send it to our room at the Hyatt the next morning. That was very nice and thoughtful of them!!!Already thinking of our next trip to Okinawa and staying at the Hotel Monterey again is definitely an option for us.     A totally ok tourist machine

    Well.. given the size of the hotel I can blame myself for the booking. This is a huge hotel that caters to A LOT of guests in a perfectly decent way. The food is okay minus (eat somewhere else for that price), the service is decent and the common areas are just as in the pictures. However, it totally lacks charm and there are a lot of stuff that costs extra (gym/ indoor pool etc). The rooms are awesome though, the reason for 3 (and not 2) stars.     This a perfect example of a hotel brand shooting itself in the foot.The positives:We stayed in one of the premium rooms and the view and room itself was fantastic. Great size, tastefully furnished and a lovely balcony.The hotel is really well positioned actually on the beach and within easy walking distance of the central restaurants.The hotel is very well kept and the staff are very friendly.The negatives:The are things through the hotel which suggest you are there at their convenience and there seems to be a will to extract every single yen out of you.There are beds around the top pool which has the view of the sea but these are a minimum of £30 a day depending on season. We saw five people using them the whole week we were there. Such a waste. The alternative is upright chairs and there are three sets of them.The pool closes at 6PM. And they lock the gates. That’s the earliest time of any hotel I have ever stayed in.There is an inside pool with a gym. It costs £7.50 per day. First time ever I have been asked to pay for a gym in a hotel.Even though there is a beach right in front of the hotel they charge you to sit on it. There are four restaurants at the hotel but offered as an either buffet or a four to five course meal. Starting price is £50 per person. However we booked a meal and were then unable to go and informed them the very first thing on the day and were told we had to pay the full amount. This was waived in the end when we argued we had not been informed of this rule.Finally, there is no bar in this hotel. A first in my experience for a 4/5 star hotel. There is the tea room in the lobby but only serves last orders at 7.30pm. A drink whilst watching the sunset would have been lovely.So in summary. Great hotel in a great position with friendly staff. But vastly let down by rules which felt they were in place to take advantage of you as a guest. This seems suicidal for a brand.We will avoid Monterey hotels in future.PS…they will say you can get packages with all the above included. We were never offered that and why should we pay anyway when the cost is already at least £200 a day?     A delightful respite

    While traveling in Okinawa for business, I had the opportunity to stay here for two nights. The weather did not cooperate for me to visit the beach, but I enjoyed the amenities of the resort. I highly recommend the Teppanyaki restaurant. The room has the amenities you would expect in Japan, including delightful skin care products. I enjoyed time on the balcony and the view of the beach from the bathtub is gorgeous. Finally, I highly recommend availing yourself of the spa and/or the in room massage session. A much needed break.     Fantastic family resort

    Great hotel for a family vacation. We booked a deluxe room for 2 adults and 2 kids (13 and 11), with 4 single beds in the room. All rooms have an ocean view and balcony. There are separate rooms for the washbasin, toilet and shower/bath.Staff were very helpful and friendly. Most staff speak enough English (some excellent English), with a number of other languages.Restaurants are good with a big selection of food. Breakfast is usually busy, need to down before about 7am to 7:30am to avoid queuing up, alternatively go down after 9am. Takeaway breakfast is available. Lots of nice local restaurants nearby if you fancy somewhere different for lunch and dinner.Travel time to and from the airport by taxi is about 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes during rush hour. Probably best to allow 1 and a half hours.Kids loved the hotel and want to go back.
