Wouldn’t recommend for lots of reasons

    rating08 Apr 2026

No sound proofing. You can hear the traffic all night. Woman receptionist not friendly or helpful. Ryokan experience is worth it but not at this hotel. Very basic room, not very big. Breakfast was Japanese, no western option even though on the welcome sheet it said there was. Very disappointed.Option to leave your luggage at the hotel but they will charge you a fee. , その他 at Yamatoya Honten, responded to this review Thank you very much for having stayed at our hotel this time. Also, thank you again for having posted a review despite being busy.We will take seriously about your opinion and use it as a material for future improvement.

The right ryokan to be right in the middle of the action

    rating06 Oct 2024

It may be a bit of a walk from the nearest metro station, but it's worth it to stay here. The staff was very helpful in both English and japanese. Check in went smoothly. You can pay cash or card and even split payment of your room between the two, which is what we did. They have a little gift shop in the lobby. As the local specialty that I hope you'll be gorging yourself on is takoyaki (octopus fritters), get a plush octopus.Tatami mats and futons awaited us in our room. If you're not a fan of such firm sleeping arrangements, extra quilts and pillows are in the closet. While we enjoyed plenty of food from Dotonbori just outside, we stocked provisions from the nearest kombini (convenience store) [just one block behind the ryokan] in our in room fridge. We didn't take advantage of the hotel's restaurant or public bath, so I can't talk about them. The ensuite bathroom was nice, though. If you're 6 feet 3 inches (1.9 meters) like me, be careful or you might hit the celling. Not with your head necessarily but with your hands while shampooing your hair.A kombini one block behind the ryokan, a tonkatsu sandwich vendor in front and all of Dotonbori right next to it. Stay here and you'll be in the middle of the best parts of Osaka nightlife.

    Not good

    rating20 Jun 2023

This hotel was terrible. It stank when you walked in like chlorine. The room was ok it was an authentic tatami. As for the bathroom it was really old and dirty. Location is good though. Not worth the price if you ask me!

Super cool travel experience in very convenient location

    rating25 Mar 2023

POSITIVES---Authentic Japanese Inn (ryokan) experience! Most of their rooms are Japanese style (no beds - sleep on thick pads on floor), although they have some Western style rooms (with conventional beds). This isn’t five-star hotel (if you want one, book the new Four Seasons at 5-7X the cost). It’s a super cool “hotel” experience, especially for a few days stay. --Incredible location (one of its biggest strengths) - it’s at the beginning of Doutonbori Street (the main tourist pedestrian street in Osaka). It’s also on the canal (which runs aside the above street). --The Inn had a nice Onsen (hot springs/mineral water) in the basement. There are separate male and female facilities. It opens as early as 6A and closes midnight’ish. Not only did sitting in hot mineral water feel good at the end of the day, but it also helped my significant muscle aches from a day of constant walking. Besides, going to an authentic Japanese Onsen was downright cool!--Front Desk staff knows English - some a little limited, but others quite well. They are also very friendly. --Has unisex kimonos in the room for your use. Makes for a cute pic. --There was daily housekeeping (in the US this is becoming a rarity). --They offer both a Japanese breakfast and a Western version. We had both. NEGATIVES---There was only one electric plug in the main (bed)room. --Wi-Fi on the 9th floor was essentially nonexistent. I occasionally saw the 8th floor Wi-Fi signal show up on the 9th floor. I had a personal Ninja Wi-Fi Hotspot so it wasn’t a big deal for me, but if I didn’t, it would be a big problem. --No chair in the room (probably in the Western-type rooms).Hint: ask for room facing the canal / Doutonbori StreetI would stay there again!

Smelly lift lobby carpet full of fat. From in-house kitchen.

    rating26 Nov 2022

The photographs are a lie.The first thing that hits you is the grubby filthy carpet in the lift lobby that smells of fat and oil coming from the kitchen that is next to the lift lobby. Its like it’s never been cleaned for years. It’s a terrible introduction to guests. I would expect and never been been disappointed by Japanese civil life, hotels and ryokans cleanliness. This accommodation is an exception.Having said that the rooms are clean and decent although still on the grubby side. You never know what your going to get travelling and at the end of three weeks in Japan we end up here disappointed with our first time in Osaka by this establishment. I’m only giving it two stars rather than none because the room cleaning staff do a great job replacing and refreshing everyday and the public bath is well maintained. We stayed here pre-booked before we l left Australia for 5 nights. So couldn’t leave after having paid in advance.Never again.
