Did not live up to first impressions

    rating17 May 2026

We re-visited Nexus Resort & Spa at Karambunai for 5 nights, after our first visit there 14 years ago. We booked direct independently. First impressions very good - we were collected from KK, the welcome was great and we had a fabulous sea view room. Also even though we arrived before check in time our room was ready. Sadly we were overall very disappointed thereafter. All the information about the resort ie maps and restaurants are by QR codes, no brochure or information in the room; on holiday I like to NOT have to check my fone. Our favourite restaurant, the Kingfisher, was closed for the duration of our stay. We only had a choice of the dining room where the breakfasts were served - and never really found out how much that cost or what it entailed or the Sunset bar. Suffice to say we ate at the Sunset Bar which had a limited menu and, even then, some dishes often unavailable. On the whole the food we had was OK but the service there was variable and we experienced mix-ups. We liked to go the Darling, Darling bar for a pre-dinner drink but a couple of times it was closed and even when we did go, there were no other guests there so it was lacking in atmosphere. The setting and grounds are wonderful, as is the sea and beach but rubbish is not cleared and bottles, plastic and wrappers were left for days. The sunsets were fabulous. The pool was ok but there were areas blocked off, peeling paint and repairs taking place. The swim up bar was dilapidated and not in use. Most days a metal construction was being built adjacent to the pool, with the noise of drilling, banging and arc welding taking place. Breakfast was included in our deal and was OK but sometimes very busy and the staff could not cope with clearing tables. On the first couple of days, we used the loungers on the beach but they did not have cushions so were not very comfortable. On the the second evening we had a pre-dinner drink, sitting on white openwork chairs on the grassy area in front of the sunset bar. I am very careful to use anti mozzi and insect bite spray but the next day I had numerous bites on my arms, legs etc. I feel sure they were sandfly bites so for the remainder of the holiday I did not go anywhere on sand or on the grassy area by bar. this meant I did not go in the sea again which I was VERY sad about as I MUCH prefer the sea to the pool. Finally, I was disappointed with the newer (larger, I think) shop which is now more like a supermarket. I recall the last visit, it had lovely handcrafted items and whilst I can see the need for some of the items now sold, I do not think that rows and rows of snacks, and drinks are necessary. Another plus was a free transfer to our next destination. I don't think I was remembering our previous visit throughout rose tinted glasses - sadly I don't think the resort now has the lovely atmosphere or the level of service it once had. If I am lucky enough to visit KK again, I don't think I will return to Nexus Resort and Spa at Karambunai. Nexus Resort, Marketing at Nexus Resort & Spa Karambunai, responded to this review Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback regarding your recent return visit to Nexus Resort & Spa Karambunai after 14 years. We are pleased to know that your arrival experience, airport transfer arrangement, early room readiness, and sea view room made a very positive first impression during your stay.Regarding resort information, kindly note that brochures and printed materials regarding dining outlets, recreational activities, and Borneo Spa are available inside the rooms for guest reference throughout the stay, in addition to the QR code information provided around the resort for convenience. As for the dining outlets, each restaurant and bar operates on different schedules and operating hours depending on occupancy levels and operational arrangements during the period. During your stay, available dining options included Sunset Bar & Pavilion alongside other operating outlets and facilities within the resort.Regarding menu selections and food availability, certain menu items may occasionally be unavailable depending on ingredient supply and operational demand at the time. Dining operations and service flow may also vary during busier service periods. The resort grounds, beachfront, and surrounding tropical environment continue to be part of the unique natural experience at Karambunai. Beach cleaning is carried out daily by the resort team; however, due to tides, currents, and changing sea conditions, some external debris may occasionally be brought ashore again throughout the day.As for the pool and surrounding facilities, enhancement and maintenance works are continuously carried out in phases across different sections of the resort as part of ongoing improvement efforts. This included improvement works around the pool area during your stay period.Regarding insects and sandflies, kindly note that the resort is located within a tropical beachfront and natural landscape environment. Guests are generally advised to use insect repellent, particularly around beach, grassy, and outdoor areas during certain times of the day.Concerning the resort shop, the outlet now offers a wider variety of convenience items, snacks, beverages, and travel essentials alongside selected souvenirs and local products to better cater to the varying needs of resort guests during their stay.We also appreciate your comments regarding the atmosphere and overall experience compared to your previous visit many years ago. The resort continues to evolve its facilities, services, and offerings to accommodate the operational and guest requirements of the current hospitality environment while maintaining the natural beachfront setting that Karambunai is known for.Thank you once again for revisiting Nexus Resort & Spa Karambunai and for sharing your experience with us.For any assistance, you may contact us at group-marcom@nexusresort.com or 011 3665 9136.

Amazing stay - but a few comments

    rating17 Feb 2026

So to start off - everything was fantastic and I really enjoyed our stay - but if I had to nit pick a few things - In depth room cleaning - Standard is good , but a Quick Look under sofa cushions or the bed reveals discarded wrappers from previous occupants Food - food was fantastic ! Service in the sunset bar is good, but they’re not always the biggest smiles Pool - perhaps the pool needs updating , we saw that renovations are underway so maybe this is one of the things they are looking at. Also, when we used to come here you could order food and drinks by the pool , it is a shame that this can’t be done anymore as it was really brilliant to do. Perhaps this will be brought back when renovations are finished ? Satay - they don’t serve regular beef or chicken satay ANYWHERE !!! Which is so unfortunate as the satays here were top notch and truly unbeatable … Breakfast - I understand that westerners are not nexus’ main demographic , but having something as simple as bacon would’ve been appreciated Floors - the floors and tiles outside the Borneo garden rooms are a bit stained , perhaps a jet wash would help Some good things were how friendly and helpful reception was ( James in particular ) , how nice the woman in the sports office was, the shop was great , and best of all the safari kayak with Roy was a true highlight of our entire Malaysia trip, he’s very informative, friendly and funny To summarise, nexus is perhaps a shining staple of how fantastic SE Asia resorts are , with stunning gardens, lovely staff and food and wonderful activities. I look forward to returning this September to see how things have changed to enhance the experience even more Nexus Resort, Marketing at Nexus Resort & Spa Karambunai, responded to this review Thank you for sharing such a detailed review of your stay. We’re thrilled to hear that overall you had a fantastic experience and enjoyed the resort grounds, friendly staff—including James and the sports office team—and the safari kayak with Roy, which sounds like a memorable highlight of your trip.We also appreciate your feedback on areas like room cleaning, pool service, breakfast options, satay availability, and the garden walkway. Renovations are ongoing across certain areas, and your comments have been noted for consideration as we continue to enhance our facilities and services. It’s wonderful to know that despite these points, you still found Nexus Resort to be a shining example of a Southeast Asia resort, and we look forward to welcoming you again this September to share the improved experiences. For any assistance, you may contact us at group-marcom@nexusresort.com or 011 3665 9136.

Overrated resort with no value for money

    rating14 Feb 2026

Good first, very good and clean beach. Good waves. Pool area beautiful. Not crowded and ample space. That’s the good part. Air conditioning is efficient. Room size is good. Shopping street with supermarket, wine store and souvenirs is great. VR games room for kids also. Bad things. Old and not well maintained. Unclean all over, meaning they do not clean. Stairs are filthy and have all kinds of small and big insects unalive on them. Terrace plants full of cigarette stubs from previous guests. Shower room glass walls white with calcium which does not create feelings of good sanitary level. Restaurant food starting with breakfast with extremely low quality. Some restaurants on multiple days do not have literally no food at all by 7pm. Lack of beverages in the same sentence. Golf course looks nice for golfers.Staff is polite and listens but ability to resolve matters is challenging. Nexus Resort, Marketing at Nexus Resort & Spa Karambunai, responded to this review Thank you for sharing such a detailed review of your stay. We’re pleased to hear that you enjoyed the beach, the waves, the spacious pool area, and the overall environment of the resort. It’s also great to know that the room size, air conditioning, and the shopping street with various outlets added positively to your experience, and that the VR games room was enjoyable for children. The resort spans a large beachfront property surrounded by natural greenery, and regular maintenance and cleaning schedules are carried out across the grounds and facilities. Observations regarding public areas, terrace conditions, and bathroom fittings have been noted and will be shared with the relevant teams as part of ongoing facility monitoring and upkeep.Regarding dining, restaurant operations and menu availability may vary depending on guest demand, service hours, and daily supply arrangements. Your comments about the breakfast and evening dining experience have been recorded for internal review together with the feedback on beverage availability. It is encouraging to know that you found the team polite and attentive. The resort continues to review operational processes and staff training to further enhance service coordination across departments. For any assistance, you may contact us at group-marcom@nexusresort.com or 011 3665 9136.

    Lousy

    rating31 Dec 2025

No one picks up the phone for assistances. We had to walk all the way to reception to make complaints and even brought the broken kettle to the reception. Reception can't even provide umbrella since it was raining. Limited food choices only the noble house have ala carte. The food we chose was lousy. The kingfisher restaurant offered buffett but no ala carte becoz of new years eve. No hot water in the bathroom. The remote controls for do not fuction for some of the lights. The staff are lazy. I stayed in the promotional room which is rm338.00 pernite. I am local i would never stay in Nexus again. Nexus Resort, Marketing at Nexus Resort & Spa Karambunai, responded to this review Thank you for sharing your feedback with us.We have taken note of your comments regarding the response time for assistance, room facilities such as hot water, lighting controls, and the kettle, as well as the availability of umbrellas during rainy weather. Your feedback on the limited dining options, New Year’s Eve dining arrangements, and overall food quality has also been noted. Please be assured that we will look into these matters with the relevant departments to review our procedures, facility maintenance, and service standards, as guest experience remains important to us. Your comments help us identify areas that require closer attention and improvement. For any assistance, you may contact us at group-marcom@nexusresort.com or 011 3665 9136.
