Stategic location but can be better

    rating27 Aug 2025

Booked two nights for two twin sharing rooms. Overall I was satisfied with staying in this hotel. Location is superb with 8 minutes walking to Gurney Plaza. There’s a hotel restaurant and I enjoyed the food there. Water supply is provided outside of the room where you could get hot water. Downside is there’s no kettle provided in the room. Room clean in is only done every two days. Hence there’s no replenish for coffee sachet and new towel .

    Dirty & Disappointing

    rating07 Jun 2018

I chose this hotel because of it's location - it's walking distance to everywhere I want. I'd passed by it a couple of times while I was in Penang, and finally got a chance to stay here this time.Upon arrival, we had to greet (note that we had to greet the receptionist) and announce our stay. We produced the booking details to an Indian lady, and she did not even bother to read the slip, instead asking us how many days we are staying for. She had the absolute worst customer service in the whole place, we had to encounter her thrice in the 3D2N we are staying there unfortunately. She talks to you as if you are wasting her time and simply does not look like she wants to work at all. She also talks rudely to her superior, which I assume is the kind Chinese man running around helping all the guests while she sits and talks back to him. We were also rudely informed that we had to pay RM 50 deposit upon our arrival. When we mention that this was not informed anywhere, she merely laughed at us and said it's compulsory. Our room was not ready as we were early, so we left and came back around 9pm. We were greeted by a cockroach upon entering. We encountered another 2 cockroaches in the next few days. The toilet bowl was uncleaned with dirt residue from a previous occupant, which is completely unacceptable. The whole place just feels dirty and icky after these experiences. We informed the counter (Chinese man, might be the owner as he is very attentive) about these issues the next morning, and they cleaned it much more proper for our last night's stay. Unfortunately, we still saw another cockroach that night. We checked out on the last day and encountered the Indian lady again. This is literally what we encountered:"Check out ah? Receipt for deposit"*Hands us RM 50*That's it. 0 customer service. And the worst part is her attitude completely changed 360 degrees when 2 young Indian men came to the counter to ask for room vacancy. Absolutely horrid experience and will not come back again.I go to many budget hotels around Asia, and this is positively the worst experience I've had. Only giving 2 stars because of it's amazing location, and also to the attentiveness of the 2 Chinese men during our stay.

EASY TO CATCH BUSES TO ALL DESTINATIONS & FREE SHUTTLE BUS PULAU TIKUS LOOP

    rating23 Mar 2018

I accompanied my mother for treatment and medication at Penang Adventist Hospital from 28th February 2018 until 15th March 2018. There were several reasons why we chose this hotel.Firstly, it was only a 3-minute walking distance from the hospital.Secondly, it offered discounted room price for patients treated at the hospital.Thirdly, the hospital offered patients the free airport transfer to and from the hospital. The airport transfer cost from the hotel was MYR 22 by Grab. Furthermore, the hotel provided free breakfast, wifi and 2 drinking water bottles with basic amenities such as liquid soap and 2 towels for twin deluxe room. Thus, this hotel was suitable for budget traveller. Laundry was charged at 7 MYR / kg for 1- day service. There was not much differences in price compared with other laundries nearby ( it was called Dobi in Malaysia ). Guests could also borrow umbrellas to protect themselves from the glaring sun in Penang. However, there was no lift at the hotel. Therefore, we chose the twin deluxe room downstairs facing Jalan Burma. We stayed most of our time at Room 102 which we considered the best room amongst the ones facing Jalan Burma. We had to pay in advance for our stay since I read from the notice board that there was a black- listed guest who did not pay the hotel rate in the past. We had to hand in the room key card to the front desk everyday before leaving in order to have our room being cleaned. Based on our experience , the room was cleaned daily after 2 PM or 3 PM. Do not expect 5- star treatment in this hotel which was perfectly fine with us. The paramount aspect for us to rate a hotel are safety and cleanliness, courtesy of the staff and employees , location , free breakfast & wifi & drinking water bottles ( except in western countries ) and basic amenities provided. All are in equal weight. The hotel itself was located at the corner of Jalan Burma and Lebuhraya Maktab at Pulau Tikus suburb of Georgetown. All Rapid Penang buses which passed the hotel would go firstly to KOMTAR ( Kompleks Tun Abdul Razak ) before going to other destinations. The building was named after Malaysian second Prime Minister. It was the main hub for all buses in Penang. There were 2 bus stops nearby the hotel. One was across Lebuhraya Maktab ( SK Convert Pulau Tikus bus stop ) and the other was across the Penang Adventist Hospital at Jalan Burma ( Adventist Hospital bus stop ). The former and latter were 1-minute and 3-minute walking distances, respectively. Rapid Penang buses number 101 ( Jetty ) , 102 ( Airport ) and 103 passed the hotel on the way to KOMTAR. However, bus 103 was the only bus from Komtar which would pass the hotel. The reason was that Jalan Burma was a one-way street. In addition, Rapid Penang CAT free shuttle bus for visiting Georgetown historical sites could be taken from KOMTAR as well. The bus fare at the time was MYR 1.40 / person for destination to KOMTAR from the hotel. There would be no change at all from bus drivers. Thus, bus fare must be paid in exact amount. We also had to hail the bus drivers from the bus stop otherwise they would not stop. Based on my observation, the bus drivers were law-abiding that they would not stop randomly but at the designated bus stops. During spare time , we went to Penang Hill by bus 204 from KOMTAR and the fare was MYR 2.00 / person for one way. Bus 10 ( Kebun Bunga direction ) to Penang Botanical Garden must be taken from Jalan Bagan Jermal at St. Nicholas School bus stop which was 10-minute walking distance from the hotel. The bus fare was 1.40 MYR / person for one way. We went to Butterworth free of charge by ferry across the Penang Strait from Jetty bus stop ( last stop of bus 101 ). We only paid the ferry fare of MYR 1.20 / person on returning to Georgetown. Neverheless, there was no Rapid Penang bus passing the Penang Bridge (13.5 km ) and the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge ( 24 km ) which was the longest bridge in South East Asia. Hence, we rented a car from the counter outside the lobby of Berjaya Hotel which was right across the Penang Adventist Hospital. The price was MYR 120 for 2 hour- journey including toll fees and driver's tip. We went to the Peninsular Malaysia via the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge and returned to Georgetown via the Penang Bridge. The toll fee was free if travelling from Georgetown to the Peninsular Malaysia via both bridges. However, the toll fee was higher if returning to Georgetown via the longest bridge. In addition, there was 7- Eleven near the Berjaya Hotel. The drinking water bottle price was similar to Sam' s Groceria at Gurney Paragon mall which was nearby Gurney Plaza mall and the Gurney Drive beach. We walked along Lebuhraya Maktab to the mall at Jalan Kelawai for around 7 minutes from Apple 1 Hotel Gurney. Conveniently though, there was a free Rapid Penang shuttle bus for Pulau Tikus Loop at every hour and everyday. It would depart from Gurney Plaza mall ( in front of G Hotel ) at Jalan Kelawai at 08.00, 09.00 onwards and passed the SK Convert Pulau Tikus bus stop at 08.18, 09.18, onwards. The final stop was again at Gurney Plaza mall. However, the latest time for us to depart the mall by the free bus was 18.00 during our stay in Penang. Thus, future visitors should check further if they would like to depart from the mall at 19.00 onwards. Based on our experience, the bus was not on time and was several minutes late. Meanwhile, The Penang Adventist Hospital had their own bakery shop and vegetarian cafeteria and they were opened for public as well. Adventist Bakery opened from Sunday until Thursday from 8 AM - 8 PM. During Friday, it opened from 8 AM - 5 PM. It closed on Saturday and selected public holidays. On the other hand, Adventist Cafeteria opened from Monday - Thursday from 6 AM -7 PM . During Friday & Sunday, it opened from 6 AM - 5 PM. Similarly, it closed on Saturday and selected public holidays. Overall, this hotel was located strategically in terms of hospital and main attraction visits. Despite unfavourable reviews from some travellers, my mother and I really enjoyed our stay at Apple 1 Hotel Gurney since Mr. Lim, Mr Endy Tan & Ms Lina were very helpful and courteous during our stay in the hotel in terms of information, transportation and other necessities. We would definitely stay here again at Apple 1 Hotel Gurney , Room 102 , if we were ever to return to Penang !

    Not price of budget hotel

    rating20 Nov 2017

The price is a little over the budget level, perhaps only because it's in a good location very near to Gurney Drive and Pulau Tikus (Rat Island). The room is almost standing room sized and has very basic amenities. The queen size bed is good to sleep when you are dead tired and the aircon can be a little noisy. Bathroom is small, relatively clean but water pressure is good. TV has a couple of uninteresting channels, even that the pictures are fuzzy. The sound proofing is poor, while wifi is free and good. Onsite parking is available. Breakfast is unremarkable and can get better and more variety at Pulau Tikus market area, about an easy 5 minutes walk. Other meals can also be found at Pulau Tikus and at Gurney Drive. Two ultra-modern shopping malls, the Gurney Plaza and Paragon at Gurney Drive is about 200m from the hotel.

Good Choice for Medical Trip to Advenstist Hospital

    rating28 Sept 2017

This hotel is near from Penang Adventist Hospital (PAH), approximately 300 metres far away. The room is not large, but not also too small. If u come here with 2 another person, you can book the family room, the room that i'd booked.. It's easy to find this hotel. When go out from PAH, turn right, go straight ahead until you find "Berjaya Hotel" in your left side. After lass Berjaya Hotel, you can find the hotel in your left side, with green write. The green colour is the characteristic of this hotel. So you can find the hotel when you see the green paint building...
