Hidden Gem for Foodies with Wheels

    rating15 Sept 2025

Affordable, Clean, and Steps Away from Food ParadiseI stayed at Brown Hotel Penang as a solo traveler over the weekend (Room 507), and it turned out to be one of the best-value stays I’ve had in Penang. I would strongly recommend this hotel for locals with their own transport — it’s a hidden gem if you’re in Penang for comfort and food. For tourists without a car, this area may feel quiet with little to see or do, so it may not be the most convenient base. The hotel itself feels like a solid 3-star property, yet the price is closer to a budget 2-star — a real bargain. My room was very clean, with excellent WiFi, cold and quiet air-conditioning, and solid brick walls that kept things peaceful. Amenities included a hairdryer, kettle, bottled water, safety box, and mini fridge. The bathroom was modern with reliable hot/cold water and a refreshing waterfall shower. The real highlight is the food nearby. Right across the street is Brown Foodcourt, a slightly hidden spot popular with locals, especially Muslims, offering a wide variety of affordable halal dishes. It’s a great alternative to the busier Padang Kota or Gurney Drive foodcourts. Just nearby, there’s also a Chinese foodcourt with equally tasty options. Together, they make the area a real food paradise if you have transport.Parking isn’t dedicated, but there’s ample space around the building (likely paid on weekdays). There’s also self-service water refill and ironing at reception. Overall, a clean, comfortable, and food-friendly stay — I’ll definitely be back!⭐ Cleanliness: 5/5⭐ Value: 5/5⭐ Service: 4/5⭐ Location: 4/5

    No parking provided

    rating05 Dec 2024

Hotel does not provide any parking for the guest. Only 2 valet parking available. You have to find your own parking which is the public parking nearby if you are lucky to find one. Lame excuse given to guests. When the hotel is build, the City Council does not approve any parking space.

    Hidden Cleaning Fee

    rating27 Sept 2024

I had a great stay! Najwa was amazing at her hospitality and service. She ensured that our birthday surprise went smoothly, from the assistance to get a lighter to light the candles to bringing the surprise from G floor to the lobby (I didn’t even have to ask), this showed that she goes the extra mile for her hotel guests. The room was small but cosy and comfy. Well maintained. The designs were eclectic and cool. We had a very comfortable short stay. However, there was NO mention that guests will be charged for stains on the bed. It was my time of the month (period), so there were some blood stains on my towel and on one side of the bed. In all me and my family’s life of staying in hotels and being a hotelier myself, we have never been charged for any stains, be it period stain or food stain or ink stain or any stain, because housekeeping/laundry can easily wash it off. It is not a permanent stain. The DM argued with me that the hotel sends laundry to an external laundrette so stains need to be charged. I said that despite stained or not, all linen is sent to an external laundrette anyway and stains will be washed off anyway so why the need to charge the guest? I also said that such “cleaning fee” or “hidden charges” are not mentioned in the website or any of the OTAs under Polices or Fees. Then the DM argued that they cannot put it on the website or OTA - her statement was completely rubbish. Being a hotelier in Marketing Communications myself, it is our job to ensure all fees and policies are mentioned to avoid any dispute from guests on hidden charges not mentioned or stated beforehand.Regardless of her rubbish claim, here’s an advice to Brown Hotel - Please make sure your marcom team clearly states that for your hotel, cleaning fees will apply for all stains in the room. Or, the Ops team to clearly mention this upon check in.I had a wonderful stay, but because of being charged for the first time in my life of staying in multiple hotels from 3-5 star hotels, for a period stain? And with this policy not communicated at all in any of the hotel website or OTA, it ruined my experience.
